Is 23AndMe the proper option to find out my ancestry ?

Hi. I'm from Georgia and I've been wondering about my traits besides my native one. I don't exactly know which one to use so that's why the title looks a bit silly.

The thing is, I have no clue of my ancestry whatsoever. Nor my great grandparent's heritage, or anyone's mostly.

But the problem I keep seeing online is that these DNA tests use the information they have gathered and if I decide to test mine, It might be inaccurate compared to other heritages, which I don't exactly know. As in, I'm Georgian and they've no information or roots of that region so they mix up with other information they have. As you can see, I am not familiar with these products and tests and that's why I'm a bit skeptical about it. You get it.

So, what would be the best choice to find more about my ancestry and links to other ethnicities. I'm only interested in my connections among the other ethnicities.

Thanks.

Hi. I'm a Japanese Studies BA freshman student, currently working on this matter.

I'm presenting a work of mine called "The Battle of Fukuda Bay and its effect on relations between Europeans and Japanese after 1565" at a conference in my college. So it's not homework if you all think.

However, I'm having a hard time finding any sources on this topic. The ones I've found are obvious and it seems that everyone knows them. Are there any sites on the internet that I can look up to besides JSTOR, AcademiaEdu, or Historians who might have described this event, Portuguese, Japanese ?

It's just that I have little time to spare to dig down the internet and find them. Plus, I have exams coming up and I cannot do two things at once, so please no judging haha.

I would really appreciate it if anyone slightly helps me out.

(and by the way, if this post is against the rules please just delete it and don't get me blocked. I live and breathe on this sub)

I am a BA Japanese Studies freshman student (19M), I made a switch from History major to JP Studies this semester as my interest has mostly been Far Eastern Asian Studies (Mostly History). However, it's not exactly taught well here to consider that I can call myself a researcher or some sort after finishing university here. Of course, I have to do a lot more learning outside the university but I have the impression that this current university isn't providing me with enough resources.

Whatever I'm trying to say here is that I had previously wanted to major in another university, which is known to be the most prestigious in the country. I decided to go the other way due to finances, it was too expensive for both me and my family to cover. However, in spite of some changes here, this university is offering free education under some circumstances which is not necessary to discuss. The point is that I get to learn there for FREE.

The problem is that my family isn't with me on this matter. They keep saying that I'm already quite established where I currently study, that I'm going to lose a whole year and regret it. It's just that I'm seen as unpredictable in my family. I am put under the pressure that I'm not capable of something like this. One of the reasons I chose JP Studies was because of its growing popularity and lack of academics since I plan on staying in academia in the future. I have the opportunity to establish myself in this very own field, there aren't many professors or people researching Asian Studies here. But, The major is not the main point here.

I've always wanted to learn there and I couldn't because of my financial situation. But now that it's free, I'm willing to enroll again even though I am technically or not losing one year but it is still an experience.

It's a huge concern for me right now and I am having a hard time discussing this with my family since they go on a rant and I can't possibly discuss it.

I would really appreciate everyone's comments and I am ready to answer anything.

Thank you.

(for confidentiality, I am not willing to give out the name of my country or the university I wish to enroll in)

(First off, if anything comes off weird from my saying, I do not intend to put anything racist or offensive in this text. Nor do I have any negative attitude to Japan.)

I'm a BA Japanese Studies freshman, second semester student. I did a switch from History major as I wanted to get JP Studies as my MA and so on.

The problems I'm already facing were quite obvious in the beginning. First, it's the language I'm dealing with. Quite challenging, but not impossible. However, it takes a lot of time to learn since I'm also studying other subjects. In spite of academic challenges, the primary issue is whether or not Japan/East Asian Studies is something worth to work with.

Since I'm Eastern European, I've always been introduced to Western Civilization culture, politics, and history. I grew an interest in Japan when I got introduced to anime (if your first generalization is that I've taken up Japan cause of anime, you're incorrect.). On the internet, Japan and Asia are viewed/seen as the place of tranquility, heaven, calmness and so on. People here talk about JP People like they're sitting dolls inside a capsule at a museum or something. "oh they're like this. They don't do this. In Japan this is this." And of course, whether or not you try to avoid this, it affects you in a way that I start to doubt the likeness of lifestyle, culture and everything related to them. One thing I'm aware of is that Culture is a major role in Japan. The second thing is that it's a lot more problematic than it is viewed online. Demographic problems, the pressure of culture, depression, self-isolation. I'm not saying that other states are cleared of problems. It's actually a simple thing. I had never been introduced to Asian culture and history as I was to Western. Whatever I learnt besides seeing the tomfoolery online (that implies "Japan is living in 2099, japanese people are like this"), It feels external that I might not exactly agree with everything I read or see about them. My mentality is different from, my views too.

The reason I took up interest in Japan and East Asian Studies was that I have the opportunity to establish and represent something new to the current academics here where I live. Since it's a new field and in progress, there seems to be a lot of opportunities trying to make a place for myself in the academic field. There is a growing interest among the youth but no one, or very few have taken it on a professional level. Therefore, with my interest in History and curiosity in Far Eastern Asia, I thought I'm on the right path, or not exactly.

I cannot exactly tell what answers I'm looking for but if this post seems complicated, I am too.

And Again, I do not intend to be hateful towards Japan or the people, I am simply trying to find out what I like to do in the future.

That is all. I am open to discussions in the comments.

Thanks.
