Jetting query for my CBR400RRn nc29 1992

Ive bought a cbr400rrn that hasnt run in over 20 years. Im gradually cleaning and rebuilding the carbs.

The bike has an unbranded aftermarket can on it. It appears a little sooty inside the outlet. When i open the airbox, it had a K&N air filter in there.

The carbs are running main jets that are stamped '.110' that i take to mean is a 110 jet. The slides have Dynojet needles that have the e-clip on the second groove from the top.

The fuel mixture screws are only 1/2 a turn out from fully seated.

From what i have read none of this is right for a std nc29 or a dynojet setup.

I havnt got all the seals etc to try and make it run yet, but id like to get it close upon assembly.

Does anyone habe any base settings?

Very sticky carbs on my CBR400rr nc29

Ive just got the bike and its been stood a long time with ethanol fuel. When i got it, it was impossible to twist the hrottle as the throttle butterflies were gummed shut. The slides were also immobile due to the needle stuck in the emulsiin tube. They were a mess.

Ive taken the carbs off and disassembled them to individual bodies. So far i have cleaned #1 carb and all is well with the butterfly snapping shut when released.

The video is of carb #2. As you can see it takes about 3 seconds for the butterfly to close. Do i just need more carb cleaner? A different solvent? Is there any danger if damaging the seal that the butterfly shaft sits in?

How do i move forwards without damaging the seal to the butterfly shaft?

Thanks

Honda CBR400rr carb diaphragm help

I have bought an unloved cbr400rrn from 1992. In cleaning the carbs, i discovered a perished diaphragm.

The diaphragm seems to be sandwiched firmly between two parts of the slide. Does the slide unscrew? I must be missing something as the needle isnt able to be removed, making me think that there is a part trapping both the diaphragm and holding the needle.

Can anyone help?

Found in Eryri (Snowdonia)

So i found this last week. It was stocked with water bottles and what i thought was melted ice cubes in a bag.

The timespan has expired. Has someone just forgotten it and has it now become litter? How long do i wait before i remove it?

Induction heater for exhaust header bolts?

Hi, i help a friend with his motorcycles and he has a Suzuki Slingshot 750 that has rotten exhaust headers.

At considerable expense he has bought a Hindle full system.

I havnt tried to remove the old exhaust yes, but i was considering an induction heater if they put up resistance!

Is this a better system than a little gas torch?

We intend to wirebrush them and have a daily application of some penetrating oil too.

Can i use an impact wrench or is there some reason this is a bad idea?

If induction jeater is the most elegant solution, can anyone recommend one available in the UK?

I dont mind buying a quality tool, as we also have an srad 750 that is destined to have a new full system too!

Thanks

So....this RX8 rebuild stuff

Hi, im in UK and have always loved RX8. There are lots of cars for sale for a really low price. Ebay has them for about £500 upwards!

However they are all trailer away and non runners. So the age of all the parts plus the need for an engine rebuild means im wondering how hard a rx8 engine is to rebuild.

Im happy with piston engines and know a lot about rebuilding/working on motorcycles inc desmo Ducati bike engines.

So, can i rebuild a wankel myself at home? Can i source parts? Can i readily assess what is within service limits, or am i just going to end up buying a recon engine from a recommended uk source?

Morocco and Atlas in October

Im off to Morocco with my adventure bike in October. Im told that airflow is king, and that temps are from about 15c-25c.

I have to ride through the UK in October (can be cool and wet) then ferry from uk to N Spain, and then through Spain to Morocco.

I have some waterproofs to wear over a riding jacket and trousers.

What jacket and trousers would you all recommend? I will need armour as we will be riding off road. Ive seen Klim Marakesh jacket and trousers. Is there anything else i should be looking at?

Broken frame bearing removal?

I have been swapping frame bearings in a 5 yr old Trek Remedy aluminium for a friend. The pivot on the seat tube has a bearing each side. These bearings are pressed upto a shoulder.

We used an expanding bearing extractor on these bearings and the NDS one came out without any probs.

However the DS one is very stuck ant the expanding extractor and hammer has knocked the inner race and balls out of the outer. The outer is still firmly stuck and due to it being pressed up to a shoulder, its proving v hard to try and drift out.

Pic1 is the NDS with bearing removed.

Pic 2 and 3 are the outer race firmly stuck

Pic 4 is the inner race and the NDS bearing after removal.

So, how to remove the stuck outer race?

i) heatgun/boiling water to expand the aluminium

ii) penetrating fluid for a couple of days

iii) dremel the outer race and hope to either cut a more suitable slot to get a punch into, or weaken it, so it has less tension holding it

iv) a combination of above with some industrial grade swearing.

Help! Any suggestions gratefully received.

EDIT

Well we managed to get it out. We used a Makita hot airgun that was set at 130c. I then had borrowed some blind bearing extractors that comprised of a collet with a little lip at the bottom. This is then attached to a slide hammer.

So, some heat, some penetrating fluid and the collet and slide hammer managed to drift it out.

Thanks for all the input!

Why pay for a ticket?

So Oulton Park is in a very wealthy part of Cheshire. The farms are wealthy and not some struggling Welsh hill farm or Scottish croft.

Both yesterday and today, this tractor pulls up alongside the wall near Clay Hill. He then spends his afternoon watching the action from over the fence.

The tractor probably isnt even paying duty on its fuel.

It just felt a bit of an insult to the people who dont get a farming subsidy and have red diesel to travel around.

EDIT It seems that the local residents get a free entry pass, so my outrage is misplaced. In fact by putting his tractor outside the circuit he even helped the parking situation.
