I’ve been thinking about the Weird Route, device theory, Dark Worlds, and the possibility of characters actually going “Out of Bounds” in Deltarune, and I think there’s an interesting way these ideas could fit together.

This is obviously speculation, but I don’t think device theory necessarily explains EVERYTHING like some think, but even if device theory is correct, I suspect the actual explanation may be a meta element rather than something the game ever completely spells out.

The important idea for understanding this theory is that Deltarune exists inside a defined space inside of a “game space.”

The game doesn’t necessarily have to tell us what exists beyond that space because, from the perspective of Deltarune, that “beyond” isn’t part of the “game.” (I hope this makes sense)

But here’s where the Weird Route gets REALLY interesting:

My main question is, what happens if someone doesn’t just leave one Dark World? What if they leave the boundaries of Deltarune itself?

The Weird Route is different to me, because Kris and Noelle are being pushed into increasingly unnatural behavior that seems to violate the normal Rouxls of the game. (Ultimately leading to the insanity that happens in the chapter 5 Weird Route)

What if Kris and Noelle actually leave Deltarune?This is the part I’ve been thinking about the most.
Suppose Kris and Noelle somehow glitch “Out of Bounds” in the chapter 5 Weird Route

If they escape the space that Deltarune is supposed to occupy, what happens to the original Deltarune world? Would the game simply continue without them? Or would the “game” attempt to repair itself?
For example, imagine that Kris and Noelle somehow end up in another game/layer entirely. Deltarune still needs a Kris and Noelle for its story to function.

So would the game essentially go:

“Those characters are missing. We need replacements,” and create a new Kris and a new Noelle in the original world? They could be new instances of the same characters, complete with the same memories, personality, relationships, etc.
That would create an extremely weird situation where the original Kris and Noelle (The OG’s) escaped the “game’s boundaries,” and the replacement Kris and Noelle appear in the original Deltarune Overworld (and Dark World’s) because the “game” needs those roles filled. And now there could effectively be two versions of the same characters existing in different layers.

The game doesn’t need to restore the original characters:

It only needs to restore the state of the world where those characters are present.

There MIGHT be Weird Route Content in Chapter 6:

This is DEFINITELY the most speculative part of the theory, but I think it would be an incredible way for Deltarune to actually reveal that something like this happened. Perchance you finish the Weird Route in Chapter 5 and Kris and Noelle eventually manage to go “Out of Bounds.”

Then Chapter 6 comes out.

You load your Weird Route save file.

Instead of putting you back where you left off, the game shows a cutscene.

And we see Kris and Noelle.

Except they’re not the original Kris and Noelle, they are the replacements. The game has already “fixed” the missing characters. They have the same memories. They look the same. They remember their friends, their hometown, everything that happened previously. As far as they’re concerned, they’re completely normal. But the player knows something is wrong. Because we saw the scene at the lake! The new Kris and Noelle don’t know that they’re replacements. Maybe we get a scene with Susie, Ralsei, Kris, and Noelle, but we know something is wrong. Something very wrong.

Then the chapter 6 Weird Route ends… setting up what happens in the chapter 7 Weird Route, which focuses on where the OG Kris and Noelle went.

I obviously don’t think there’s enough evidence to say this will happen in Chapter 6, but it’s very interesting to think about. VERY VERY INTERESTING ;)

So… um… yeah. This one took a lot longer than expected. It’s been 60 days since I last posted progress on my FireRed SBQ, so I am VERY happy to post progress once again. I made a big push in the last week to grind TONS of encounters (I’m single hunting so it takes longer). It is with great pride that I am able to share this hunt with y’all! He is home now.
