Med points

ck in February, it was announced that there had been a massive increase in the number of people applying for medicine through the CAO.

Then on Thursday, the grad med offers came out and the points for pretty much every course went up by quite a bit.

Since grad med applicants also apply through the CAO, do we think a significant portion of the reported increase in medicine applicants/first preferences was actually coming from grad med rather than undergrad applicants?

Basically, could the big increase we heard about earlier in the year have been partly driven by the increase in grad med demand, meaning the increase for undergrad medicine might not be as large as it initially seemed?

Showing up to random lectures?

Can I just show up to random lectures in a degree im not studying?

Id like to attend some law lectures just to see what they are like, but idk do they ask questions and stuff in these classes that I could get randomly picked? Are they big enough as I wouldnt be noticed if I just sat in. For people doing law, what module would u recommend going to a few lectures for, if I can.

UCD case with student, and student getting arrested

Could the students identity be released if she is found responsible for providing ucd with fake documentation, since this is a criminal matter or would she still be protected?

And what will happen with her court of appeals case? And if she provided fake evidence in the high court what will happen with that?

Help with stopping downloads

My grandparents recently got scammed (unfortunately this isn't the first time). The scammers convinced them to install a remote access program. Banking and watching yt are basically the only things they use the laptop for, so they dont need to be able to download stuff.

I'm trying to make the laptop as "scam-proof" as possible. Is there any way on Windows to completely block or heavily restrict downloading and installing programs? Ideally I'd like to stop them from being able to download executable files at all, so even if they're convinced by another scammer, they won't be able to install remote access software.

I'm open to any suggestions, whether that's built-in Windows settings, parental controls, third-party software, or changing their account permissions. Has anyone done something similar for elderly relatives?

Thanks!

Sorry if this is the wrong tech sub for this, I just dont want this to happen again

Should I date within medicine or outside of it?

I'm a medical student in Ireland, and I'm not sure whether I'd be better off dating someone who's also in medicine or someone in a completely different field.

I've experienced both, and each has its pros and cons.

When I've dated other med students, we understand each other's workload, long hours, exams, and the general stress that comes with the course. It's nice not having to explain why you're busy or exhausted. The downside is that medicine can end up being all we talk about, and after spending all day studying or on placement, that can get pretty draining.

There's also the fact that after medical school, we'll likely have to move around the country for internship and specialty training. If we're both in medicine, there's a decent chance we'll end up assigned to different parts of Ireland. It's not a huge country, so it wouldn't necessarily be long-distance in the traditional sense, but it could still make a relationship more difficult for a few years.

On the other hand, when I've dated people in law or other careers, I really enjoy hearing about what they do. It gives me a break from talking about medicine all the time, and I find it interesting learning about something completely different. The downside is that they don't always understand the demands of medicine, and I don't always understand the specifics of their job either.

I'm at the stage where I'd like to be intentional about dating, so I'm wondering what people with more life experience think. Am I overthinking this, or is one option generally better than the other? I'd especially love to hear from people who have been in relationships where one or both partners work in medicine.

Dating in the same field or different?

Do people generally prefer dating someone in the same profession, or someone in a completely different field?

I'm a medical student, and I've noticed pros and cons to both.

When I've dated other med students, we understand each other's schedules, workload, and the stress that comes with the course. It's nice not having to explain why you're busy or exhausted. The downside is that medicine can end up being all we talk about, and after spending the whole day studying or in placement, that can get a bit draining.

On the other hand, when I've dated people studying law or working in other fields, I find it really interesting hearing about what they do. It gives me a break from talking about medicine all the time and I enjoy learning about something completely different. The only downside is that sometimes they don't fully understand the demands of medicine, and I don't always understand the details of what they do either.

I'm curious what other people's experiences have been. Do you prefer dating someone in the same field as you, or someone with a completely different career? Why?

Would u choose the Public only Consultant Contract, or the older ones if your were given the choice?

Just curious to see what people think, and whether they would choose the older contracts, because Im just after reading the RTE article about the uptake of the new contract with older consultants and it seems like a good uptake in Dublin but less so in other places

Buying a Mac Book air Ops

So ive got a fairly good gaming laptop rn, but its battery is absolute awful, as is to be expected, and will never last me a full day in college, so i was thinking of buying a mac air for the battery life, and not proud to say it but fit in with my course.

I was playing on keeping both because obv gaming on Macs aint the best.

What do people think?
