How can you tell a CGC case has been tampered with?

Hi there. I have mostly raw books but I recently purchased a CGC graded book. I don’t know much about how they are supposed to look, but the one I got has what looks like a melted patch on the left side. I don’t know if that’s part of the sealing process. But I’ve heard tampering happens sometimes. Also while the label says “white pages”,the pages are clearly tan looking through the case.

What are your Comic book preservation techniques (unslabbed.)

Hi folks. Came into a nice collection of 50’s era comics. Been studying preservation methods. Curious what you do to preserve each book. For example: do Microchamber papers work? How do you place them? Do you seal the book in Mylar bags? Anything else you do to ensure these books last a hundred more years? Thank

Is it common for sellers to conceal flaws to sell at a higher price?

I have encountered this twice this week. Online sellers omitting or “forgetting” to mention flaws that cap these comics at low grade despite selling them for multiple times overstreet values. It’s such a bummer when you wait for a beautiful book that ends up having undisclosed flaws. One seller didn’t even apologize and just resistantly offered some cash back.

Got a beautiful pre-code Horror today. But... no staples!

Hi folks. I received what would be a beautiful Haunt of Fear 26 from 1954. As I open it i realized it had absolutely no staples! Any recommendations on where to source 1950 era staples?

Vault of Horror #35

This is by far one of the most iconic issues, adapted for both the original Tales From the Crypt film and the HBO show Episode “And all through the house.” About an escaped mental patient killer dressed in a Santa suit. A cozy Xmas tale. I didn’t completely understand locking one away and reading the reprint instead until graving this one. The original owner repaired a torn cover corner years ago. While it’s not perfect, it’s mine and sure is pretty.

Haunt of Fear #25

Got a survivor today. Colors are brilliant. Cover is fragile. Contemplating if it is a candidate for conservation or to just leave her alone. Wanting to dig in and read right now.

The Haunt of Fear #20

This baby arrived in the mail today. While she’s been through a lot (notice the chips) the previous owner did what appears to be an excellent job pressing out the folds and creases. Another cherished addition to my growing collection. And it didn’t even break the bank!

Framing a thin paper piece of art. Need advice for archival materials and possible floating mount technique

Hi folks. I purchased a 50 year old production sketch from a film that I would like to mount and frame myself. The paper is thin and like vellum but i suspect a cheaper paper. In this case I would like to avoid any adhesives, acidic materials or the acrylic touching the piece.. I would prefer to do a float mount as there is writing on the art that goes straight to the edge, but since it's such a thin paper I don't know how secure I can get it. So wondered if folks had any recommendations. Probably using Peterboro backing to assist with acidity absorption and Tru Vue acrylic. But the actual mounting is where I'm stumped. My chosen frame is 5/16" deep. Photo attached is a partial image of the piece on a simulation frame just to give an idea of what i'm going for. Can't afford the 800$ quote to have it done professionally and since I've framed several other pieces I feel pretty confident i can do it myself.

Creepy #1. Maybe a 9.0?

I know there are plenty of nice Creepy's out there. But this one is a beauty. The only flaw I could find was that tiny blunting in the bottom corner of the spine. Alas. But still a beautiful book. Wish my Famous Monsters #1 was in this condition!

Marvel Tales #97 - 1950 - Canadian Variant

Hi folks. I just picked up this Marvel Tales #97, the Canadian variant published by Bell. I haven't seen to much about this issue so I'm coming to the community to see who might have info to help me determine if it's been restored or had the cover replaced, etc. The cover also feels like a heavier paper stock. The interior cover on front and back are totally blank. The cover is detached from staples although still sticking to binding. I've attached some photos. Any info?

The Vault of Horror #24

I got this low grade reader The Vault of Horror as a package deal with another two better grades. I love how they profile the artist on the inside cover here. This one is a Johnny Craig. The opening story “A Bloody Undertaking.”

Famous Monsters #1

Not technically a comic book but adjacent in its collectibility. I grabbed this low grade Famous Monsters #1. It’s seen better days. The cover is quite worn with a big chunk missing. Trying to decide if there’s a way to restore it or just keep it as is. The inside pages are in excellent condition.

How do you get the musty smell out of old Comic Books?

Hi folks!

On my recent journey in collecting the old EC pre-code comics I have finally run into that thing you cannot screen for when buying online. Oh yes. That head achy, pungent and insidious musty odor. I don’t mind the old paper smell but these are way extra. I've been looking online and am now coming to you all to share what your best techniques have been. Is it kitty litter? Ozonater? Baking Soda? Ideally I'm hoping not to spending tons of money on expensive gadgets to rid these otherwise great old of books of that nasty smell.

Scored 2 more Vault of Horror comicw!

#29 in great shape and #24 reader copy. One can have a worse mid life crisis. Some buy sports cars. I buy golden age horror and sci-fi ephemera. Still haven't nabbed any Tales from the Crypt, Haunt of Fear or Crime Suspenstories. Holding out and saving my funds to find some keys that were used to adapt the HBO show. I'm looking at you Vault of Horror #35.

Golden Age Marvel with cover detatched

Hi folks. Newer collector here. I've got a 1950 Marvel Tales in otherwise really nice shape. But the cover has come detached. Is there a way to elegantly reattach this? With cover attached it would possibly have been a grade 6.0. Curious if it would be a waste to grade with detached cover. I've also got a few other various rarities like Famous Monsters #1 with a chunk of the cover torn off but high grade interior, 2 Astounding Science Fiction August 1938 - 1 with cover detached but otherwise solid and one with tape along the spine and would have probably been a high grade had that not been done. Curious what if anything I could/should do and why or why not.
