I thought up until today when my pair came in from a restock I sniped that the upper wass supple nubuck or a thicker suede - but its like.... brushed leather at best? Seems that every release is more accessible, higher production numbers - not to say that I mind, because I buy what I like. That said, I think if this pair turned out to be a limited run, all the 'pass' 'im good' conversations would look very different after a few months roll by.

*** edit *** Seems to be a very controversial release, as quiet as its approach has been. For those who are new to the brand, new to sneakers, or new to fashion in general, a few things that may seem obvious or common sense to some could be completely bypassing others who don't know where to look or what they're looking at. So, here are a few examples of artistic cues that this particular sneaker from Jjjjound demonstrates to the keen eye:

First, and maybe most important, Jjjjound strips away the fat from the original New Balance 740 - the bulk, visual and physical. I'll explain...

The mesh from the 740 is replaced with a finer, tight knit overlay. It gives the entire upper a more streamlined, and smoother visual. Think the difference between a basketball net and chicken wire or some super fine mesh that your mom might use to strain things in the kitchen. That difference is applied here, immediately making the shoe look less like an old school athletic runner, and gives an updated technical feel.

Second, are obviously, I think, the synthetic materials are swapped mostly for nubuck, leather, and a premium synthetic suede used for the sock liner. Whether or not you realize it, if you are used to being around luxury items, furniture, clothing, etc, youre going to notice the tactile difference between the plastic like feel of synthetics and small hits of nubuck. The most complicated production detail seems to be the lack of typical stitching around the shoe. Jjjjound is instead using heat bonded overlays, again, reducing bulk, creating a more stream lined appeal. As an example, the difference between a cluttered work space and a neat, clean area is immediately calming, appealing to the eye. The removal of clutter relaxes the mind and decreases anxiety. Whether or not that was the approach or just minimalism alone, Jjjjound's trademark, doesn't really matter, as it accomplishes both.

The color palette is likely the most obvious detail. The repetition is purposeful. The brown, cream, tan, grey, and beige that paint the uppers on most of the collabs with new balance trademark a neutral, monochromatic layering. This technique is especially transparent on the 740. All of the colors are meant to mimic organic design. It is a quiet luxury that blends in with the most natural visual cues. I could probably continue for most of the evening but I have a life, for the most part. I appreciate the discourse with everyone on the page, even the disagreements - especially those. Gives an opportunity for me to see what others do through a different lense to the same world. See you guys at the next release!
