Fresh feels better than nostalgia, but things haven't been fresh for a while, so we fall back to nostalgia.

Part of what makes the '80s and '90s nostalgic in the first place, was how new, exciting, and optimistic things felt. People in the '90s weren't even nostalgic over the '80s, which already seemed dated in comparison, cuz the wheel kept on turning smoothly.

Love or hate Skrillex and modern EDM, but it at least felt fresh and exciting around 2010. Now everything just seems like a curated homage or throwback to something else. As nice as it is to see some styles come back, it's also bittersweet, and not necessarily a substitute for innovation.

I think I'm saying; a style is more than the sum of its parts. Borrow from the past, sure, just don't get stuck there. Pick up at a good point where things left off, and keep the underlying intent and spirit alive, instead of a retrospective checklist.

Does anyone prefer the older networking architecture of no lag compensation?

To summarize: Lag compensation became the norm by 2004, but not without controversy. How it works is; since everyone sees other players a few frames in the past due to latency, lag compensation favors the shooter: If you shoot an enemy's puppet on your screen, the shot counts. But from the target player's perspective, they already made it behind a wall, and now they've notoriously died from behind it. The shooter shot at the past but it counted in the present. But at least the shooter feels like their shots were accurate.

Without lag comp, you have to lead your shots, since the real player is actually a few frames ahead of where you see them on your end (the past). Pesky perhaps, but you could just think of it as natural bullet spread or velocity for hitscans. Shot leading used to be a skill in itself, in games like Quake. On the bright side, you didn't get seemingly "shot through walls."

But which do you prefer? I'm working on a game and am kinda favoring the old-school approach for now.

Did it seem like the '90s had mini-eras?

I felt like it had some big shifts throughout. And I break it down as:

1990-1995 Melancholic but chill. Grunge and dance music on the charts. A rainy day but with plenty of sun.

1996 Futuristic excitement. Pop, rock, hip-hop. What's computer animation and the internet?

1997 Sleek shift. Solid CGI. Pop, R&B

1998 Smooth, polished, balanced. Pop, rock, DnB, R&B

1999-2000 Nu-metal, pop, trance, rap, skate punk. Now we have DVDs and home internet, what really could get more advanced than this?

Is Papa Roach nu metal?

If not, they seem highly adjacent. I don't see them mentioned a lot here, but chances are if you were into LB and Korn, you probably enjoyed Papa Roach as well. I know I did, and do.

I wanna give credit to the younger generations for reviving the spirit of the '90s.

Plus the early 2000s. The varied clothing styles, the music like drum n bass, nu-metal, gabber, live shows, physical mediums, anime, retro style games and appreciation of the old ones. I know us millennials and gen-xers might come off as gatekeepy sometimes, but it's kind of self-sabotaging if we wanna see the cool stuff continue. The '90s were a fun and creative time, and if people weren't there to experience it, they can at least observe it and bring it back. So kudos to anyone doing it, and not being satisfied with the bland "sophisticated" stuff that took over later on.

In which 15 year span did things feel like they changed the most?

I'd assume 1965 to 1980 was pretty varied, but from what I've lived and being a gamer; 1990-2005.

Is the concept of virtual particles/always active vacuum oscillations, ontological baggage?

As it's mathematically unnecessary, creates a few dilemmas, and it's much simpler to consider the vacuum reactive instead.

Handy chart to help you realize what generation you really are:

Do you remember life before home internet took off? - True Millennial, Gen X, Boomer, etc.

Do you remember life before smartphones took off? - True Gen Z.

Do you remember life before AI took off? - True Gen Alpha.

Did 1979 to 1980 feel like a big leap?

Or was it a more steady and predictable trajectory, starting in the mid-late '70s? It seems like a lot of things changed relatively overnight; styles like Memphis Milano, music (synthesizer pop and soundtracks), arcade game graphics, etc., like the same vision of the future clicked for everyone and they jumped in. Or at least a direction solidified.

Anyone here playing AQtion? (Action Quake 2, free standalone)

I was pleasantly surprised to see it still has a dedicated community. The game has a ton of old-school charm. The OG devs went on to create Counter-Strike and other Action games, which the new fps, Out of Action, is inspired by. I recommend installing the AQ2 Pro addon for this, if you check it out :)

If the EM field resonates at C, and a gravity pulse travels at C along the z axis, shifting the phase, is this mathematically a traveling wave packet?

reddit.com
u/Slopii — 3 months ago

Is this a good summary of the vacuum's properties, to understand quite a bit of particle physics?

Simplified, but it paints a picture. The vacuum regarding the EM field:

Zero AC resistance (infinitely allows transverse waves)

Infinite DC resistance (fully blocks longitudinal waves)

Capacitance (give): 8.854 pico-Farads per meter

Inductance (push): 1.2566 micro-Henries per meter

Impedance: 377 Ohms

There is also static everywhere.

DC is like a hammer to a wall.

AC is like a drill. A photon packet is like a drill bit.

The system may be self-correcting, filling voids left by attosecond, zero impedance absorptions, but that is up for debate.

What was this '90s looking movie?

R or PG-13. Seemed to be a drama with some action, grungy vibe, probably 1994-1997, but maybe even early 2000s. All I remember is a guy shows up at a sketchy, rundown house, possibly meeting someone. He snoops around for a bit and finds a gun or drugs. Not a lot of music, more serious, and slightly indie style. It was intriguing. Thanks.
