Does joining frat mean giving up on Straight As?

I’m trying to join an academic Latino frat in public state school. So far, the experience hasn’t been fun. The initiation process is basically simulating a corporate environment where we do presentations. We’re given formats to follow and information to memorize. There’s 15 positions to be filled up for our group but only 3 of us actually stayed so we each take like 5 positions. On top of that, the two guys I’m working with both aren’t as reliable. One is a really young dude so I don’t expect him to be as reliable but at least he tries. The other dude is a senior who is not pulling his weight. This dude asked me how to tie his necktie the literal hour before the presentation. They both showed up not knowing how to tie their shit but I googled how so I did it for them. We ended up having to stay and recite the passages until we had it memorized because they didn’t take the time to do so.

Anyways, I now have a lot of shit to do on my plate. On top of studying for midterms I have to interview an active, make a new set of rules, get my 2 brothers to study or even just bother to mention that they haven’t been studying, come up with a proposal for community service, and get ready to be shit on again for the next meeting cuz I know my brothers aren’t gonna be on top of their game.

I care a lot about my academics because I used to be homeless. That’s why I find joining an academic frat so appealing but it doesn’t seem like academics are an actual priority here… If only there was a frat where the initiation process is helping each other get perfect scores in every test lmao

26M looking for people to go on adventures with

Currently in college. I love going out for matcha to yap about whatever or to just relax and read. I try to explore LA to look for cool places to sightsee and also to cafe hop. Would be nice to have people to hike places with or just sit down and chat.

I’m still looking for a third place but it’s difficult to find any that works with my college and work schedule. I live in Southbay so it’s been an almost impossible struggle to make friends. Add to the fact that I go to a commuter school studying computer science and I may as well be attending classes by myself lol. I don’t drive because I moved here late and didn’t have parents to teach me. But I can go anywhere on the weekends by bus.

I’m down to do anything that sounds fun. I don’t like staying at home. But I do also play video games when I want to relax before bed. Mostly indies or coop games like PEAK.

How did you guys find your place in society?

I am currently a Computer Science student. I thought I could find a career in solving problems for others. But that's since been replaced by technological advancement. I've tried other fields like Engineering, Physics, PR, Japanese Translation... didn't work out. I truly think there is no place for me in society. I don't have much ambition. I just want a place to go home to where I can do little fun things like draw, sing, or dance. I don't care for material objects yet I'm forced to be ambitious so I can have a decent job just to live a normal life. But none of these decent jobs are for me. I can't act fake just so I can fit into corporate culture. I can't do jobs I have no interest in.

How did you guys find stability in society?

Does life ever actually get any easier?

Late 20s. Back in college again to try to get a chance at having a decent life. I still don't really understand why I'm here because I'm learning so much information I will never remember after I graduate. But HR employees say you need one, so I guess I need one? Can't save for a car because retail jobs want open availability even though they never give full-time hours. Live in a suburb with no way to make friends. Everything fun is over 40 minutes away by bus. Wouldn't be able to afford anything fun anyways because of how expensive everything is. Commuter school so there's no sense of community at my college either.

I'm just tired. I never asked to be alive. Life would be more bearable if I had family to go back to and confide my problems in. But my mom and my dad were both terrible and left me stunted. I had to spend my early 20s learning how to just be a normal person and it took a lot of heartache and embarrassment just to get to this point. It stings to see folks 5 years younger than me having the time of their lives. I feel like a loser even though it really wasn't my fault I turned out this way.

Anyone ever experienced a similar situation? Does it ever get any better? Or do I just accept that life is just a never-ending stream of misery?

How did you guys make your friends?

How did you guys make your friends in LA? I don't mean acquaintances; I mean actual friends that you hang out with and can confide in. I've been struggling with this problem since forever. I have many acquaintances but no friends.

I notice most people my age don't really have hobbies besides drinking and looking at Instagram reels (i don't drink). Of the ones that do go out and do anything else, it feels like they belong to an entirely different wealth bracket. I'm a foreigner and don't have family in LA. I go to a commuter college and work part-time. The only time where I ever really made genuine friends was in a homeless shelter where I stayed at for a bit. But I lost contact with them when we all went our separate ways. The fact that you need a car to go literally anywhere also doesn't help. Don't have one at the moment but it's something I'm saving up for.

I don't know if there's something wrong with me or if it's just the city I'm in. I feel like I'm just not compatible with LA.

Dealing with bad professors?

when I say "bad," I mean legitimately.

ive never seen a professor with such a horrible Canvas setup. his due dates are all over the place because he still recycles the same modules from years ago. his answer keys for quizzes are straight up wrong. his tests are confusing because of formatting errors and boomer speak (you know how old people use lots of ....... when texting?) he uses a different website where you have to buy the e-book and take homework. apparently, it's supposed to cost way less but "this year" it just "happens" to be more expensive (or he just never bothered to double check?). so now we're stuck in limbo where we're waiting for him to say something about it before we bite the bullet and just fork over hundreds of dollars for a book we won't use. we have 6 weeks for this class and its already the 3rd week. people have tried to email him with no response.

on the first week, he started his lectures late and would keep lecturing for as much as he wanted. you also literally would have no idea he's having the lecture because you have to EMAIL HIM for the LINK to the zoom (wtf???). he doesn't know you can just put the zoom link on the canvas... im baffled. ive never seen a professor like this.

according to RMP, he's apparently an "easy C" professor so maybe I'll pass anyway. but I really want to graduate with honors (for my own sense of achievement really but i'd like to stay above 3.5 gpa for internships). if I get a C in this class due to no fault of my own, im gonna be pissed. should I report him? would that even do anything or is it more trouble than its worth? should I even care and just let it slide?
