Shouldn't there be a higher treshold for Stealth checks, the more guards are there?

As far as I understand it, DnD stealth rules as written (and probably also as intended) state that when a character is sneaking around, you need to only take the highest passive perception into account. But isn't it kinda weird when you think about it? It means you can pass through a room with 20 orcs in it just as easy as with 1 orc in it. It feels too easy and contraived.

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to add +1 to DC for every additional guard in a place.

What do you think? Am I overthinking it? Do you think it'd be a good idea? How do you do stealth at your table?

Thank you in advance!

Is it ever a good idea to start campaign with a surprise?

I have played many campaigns where DM did not disclouse some improtant information to the players at the beginning of the campaign, because he wanted it to be a plot twist.

Once, he didn't tell us we will travel 50 years into the future.

Another, that the plot requires us to make a pact with a devil (not for a soul, but still pact with a devil).

There were other instances as well, but what unites them all is the fact that it never, ever worked out. Players have been prepared and excited for a specific format, made characters, prepared backstories, created builds and then lost it all to a sudden thing they couldn't see coming. This taught me to never make plot twists in my campaigns, at least not at the beginning of one.

I wonder however, if it's always the case. Do you have similar experience? Have you ever done or prepared a plot twist and it worked out well?

Is it me or is Tarrasque kinda weak?

I have always loved Tarrasque as the idea of a scary, powerful, kaiju-styled monster, but is he really? I don't think a lvl 20 party would actually struggle with him at all, and they are definitely supposed to, considering it's CR 30.

I never had a chance to check this though. I have run it once, but it was against a party with such a ridiculously overpowered homebrew that it didn't really count

Warhammer for medium encouters

Okay, so we have Warhammer fantasy rpg for a group of <10 people, including optional hirelings, fighting another group of <10 creatures.

Then we have Warhammer fantasy wargame, for a group of >100 people fighting >100 creatures.

What about what's in the middle? Is there some expansion which allows your players to fight against a larger numbers of creatures, while commanding sizeable groups of hirelings, but still with controlling their own characters, who take part in the battle, either using their commanding skills or just being in the lines?

That sounds cool as heck but I couldn't find anything like this

My players got my plot completely wrong, should I tell them?

My cleric have had a vision in which a half-elf half-orc is ripping apart chains to unleash a a beast. He assumed that means someone is trying to summon Gruumsh into the material plane, which isn't the point at all.

Should I tell him he's wrong or just roll with it and see when he figures it out?

Knowing my players, that might take some time

My players seem not too invested in my plot

I have been DMing for my current group for around 6 months. They have just reached level 8 and we are halfway through the story. I have laid out various story hooks and plot foreshadowings, but they seem either unwilling or unable to grab them.

In general, the story is about locating and stopping (or joining) the evil wizard who keeps kidnapping royal family members for reason not yet known. The campaign started with my players witnessing the first kidnapping during a festival. Their reaction was "well, that just happened", but that was understandable, because they had low level and couldn't really investigate it further.

Our next major plot point was at level 5, where they mission was to protect another royal during an improtant speech. They succeeded, and even managed to caught one of the attackers alive, thanks to clever reading of Revivify, which doesn't state the soul needs to be free or willing to be ressurenced. I didn't see that coming, but I decided to roll with that. The players interrogated the attacker and learned that he's part of the Golden Company, the continet's largest mercenary group. The man who hired them was called Ygorl, wore a skeleton mask and was clearly a powerful wizard.

Now, I have had a bit of a problem recently, because I thought my players will follow this lead, investigate who the Ygorl might be or try to learn more about the Golden Company. They didn't. I had to put an NPC in front of them to basically tell them what I wanted them to know because they did not try to learn about it at all.

It isn't a massive problem, this wasn't necessary for plot progression. But it does bothers me they are so univested in the plot.

I wonder if I can help it somehow. They don't seem to do it out of malice or indifference, I feel like the problem is more with my approach. Any ideas how could I improve it?

I screwed up and gave my player griffon to early, what to do now?

My player wanted to buy a griffon. I said he can have one for 5 000 gp.

Unfortunately, I have forgot that the very next session I have planned will be in forest, with lots of enviromental encouters, like crossing a massive chasm, climbing a high wall, squeezing through a narrow passage and so on. Having a griffon kinda kills the idea.

I don't mind him having one in the future, but I've accidently set the next quest on super easy. Should I talk about it with him? Give some in-story reason why he cannot use it (they are in a druid groove at the moment, so it wouldn't be that difficult)? Maybe alter the encouters so the griffon wouldn't be that helpful?

This last one would be the best option, but it's going to be tricky. Massive gaps don't exactly like creatures with flying speed.

What DC would be fine for this mechanic?

I'm working on adding a new, unique quirk to all base game dragons. I'm currently working on the Young Black Dragon, above is what I plan on implementing. I'm not sure what DC would be fair for this. The usual DC for Young Black Dragon breath attack is 14, but I worry if that won't end up with the entire party becoming diseased within minutes.

You can also let me know what do you think about the mechanic itself. I know it will slow the game down quite a bit with all the Saving Throws, but I hope it's going to be manageable, especially once everyone starts wearing around amulets of health

I need my players to take a quest, I don't know how to go about it

During session zero, I have explain my players that I expect them to follow a specific plot and bite hooks for the main quests, because I consider it a form of tabletop savoir-vivre'u. However, I have also added a bunch of optional quests, which I have clearly stated they do not need to take part in.

Now, this decision comes back to haunt me, because I am about to introduce an NPC who will offer them a job they need to take to further the plot. Basically, a long-term cooperation to solve the ongoing, continent-wide problem.

I'm not sure how to make clear I need them to take this. I don't want to say so outright, that feels cheap, but I also don't want them to reject the offer - it'd cause problems both for me and for them as well. Besides, I'm fairly confident they will agree no problem the moment they realise I want them to.

I just wonder how to tip them of in-game

New Genies

Mark, I saw what you did with Hags and it's quite amazing! Finally, the breach between the Archhag and regular Hags has been breached.

Now, I wondered if you could do something similar with Geniees? I know you already made a geniee expansion, but those are mostly *stronger* than the ones from the Monster Manual, which claims that only exceptionally powerful geniees can grand wishes at all. I wish there was more weaker geniees to make it make sense.

Advantage, bonuses and what else?

In DnD 5e there are three obvious ways to boost your players rolls: giving them an advantage to a roll, giving them a +X to the roll's result and giving them an additional die to roll and then add.

However, I like experimenting and adding new elements to the game. I wonder if there is a different kind of bonuses I can add besides those most obvious three

"Light" cantrip spoils my adventure

I have had an idea for a horror themed oneshot, somewhere around lvl 5, where the characters are chased by a Nightwalker inspired monster and its undead servants.

The canon Nightwalker itself is a CR 20 monster, but in this version, it doesn't have the Finger of Doom attack and cannot walk into bright light.

This means that if players want to live, they need to escape the dungeon they got into before they run out of torches and spell slots, or they will be sitting ducks for the monster.

Of course, his undead army of zombies, skeletons and other gruesome things have no such limitations.

Now, it's all great, except that the cantrip Light can create infinite amount of bright light, killing the whole concept. I don't know how to work around it.

The obvious answer is to ban it, but I don't like banning content. Maybe I should do that the Nightwalker is only repelled by Daylight and actual fire, not bright light itself? Or give him the Dispel Magic action? But I feel like both can be worked around.

How would you solve this? Thank you in advance

How to give a satisfying ending to a sandbox campaign?

My next campaign is going to be an almost total sandbox - my players will join a crusade to regain territories taken by Orcs during the last crisis. These lands has belonged to Kniland, the kingdom the players came from, for over 1000 years and many people want to come back there, but Orcs have been living there for 40 years already and consider it their home, making the whole campaign morally gray.

The players are free to do whatever they find right and side with whoever they think is the good or least bad guys. They can retake territory, they can expand the human kingdom, they can side with orcs, they can try to work out compromises, they can abandon politics whatsoever and just work as adventurers, there's no one canon patch they need to take. I have prepared multiple factions, both inside the human and orc civilizations, and multiple terrains, so there's really nothing they cannot do.

Now, all of this sounds interesting, but how to end it well? If there's no a specific goal, there's also no specific place where the campaign will be over. How to end it in a satisfying way then?

I need "Reacted" Condition Rings

I have a collection of Condition Rings (small round rings you up on top or underneath your Mini to indicate it has an ongoing condition. There are many Conditions in DnD, so of course some are lacking, but I have been gravely annoyed with the fact that I cannot get any saying "reacted". Could I somehow make them myself? How?

Help me word this better

I'm adding negative hit points for a special Magic Item and I need help to word it better so I avoid misundestandings at the table:

If your hp ever reaches below your maximum hp x -1, you die instantly.

The idea is that if your maximal xp is 100, but you reach -101 hp, you die instantly.

What could I put in an evil archwizard Lair?

My lvl 20 party is going into my evil archwizard BBEG lair and I'm too lazy to come up with cool rooms myself, so I went to the obviously best place for suggestions on the Internet.

They couldn't help though, I so decided to try here
