I'm still amazed at how much sandbox replayability there is in a game that's eight years old, takes up only 20GB (on my Series S), and doesn't require a constant internet connection (you can literally play it for weeks completely offline).

I currently live in a remote area where there's no internet at all (I occasionally go into town). I was still quite young when Diablo 2 peaked in popularity, but I think I wouldn't be far off the mark if I called State of Decay 2 something similar.

I have a question about save syncing.

Yesterday, I deleted the saves EVERYWHERE for some games (which I'd previously uninstalled from my Xbox Series S console).

I selected a specific uninstalled game in the games list, went to "manage something", "save data" and "DELETE EVERYWHERE." After that, I reinstalled the game, launched it, and saw that the saves were still there.

This isn't a problem, but I have a question: why is it that if I select "SAVE DATA - DELETE EVERYWHERE" (while the game is not installed) the saves are still there after I install the game? Am I missing something? Is this some kind of "fool-safe" protection against rash actions, or what is it?

Games in question: State of Decay 2, Dead Island 2, Assassin's Creed Origins

My Bayek is level 34, hasn't seen Aya, hasn't completed any story quests since leaving Siwa, hasn't unlocked the ability to change his hairstyle/beard, hasn't upgraded his armor, and hasn't unlocked any skills (except the very first one—segment regeneration during combat).

He's been wandering around Egypt doing side quests (hence the shield). And he still only uses the Heavy Blunt Gruesome Mattock (mostly just the heavy attack with built-in parry), which he got back in Siwa during "Striking the Anvil", near the very beginning of the story.

This video is from yesterday; my Bayek is currently level 36 and is doing side quests in northwest Egypt (on the Roman-occupied Libyan border). I never thought I'd ever try playing a game this way. Origins is probably my favorite game in the series (for many reasons that are best described in a separate post). The difficulty level is Normal, overall there are no problems, so far it's quite playable.

Doing only side quests and going all over Egypt is a pretty unconventional way to play, and some nerds like me might enjoy it.

This isn't so much a routine or a detailed guide to building a beautiful body, but an inspiring example of how easy it is to start feeling better if you just have a little desire.

For several years, I've been working in an office from 9 to 5, 5 days a week. It's a sedentary job. Moreover, it's stressful. Sometimes even nail-biting level of stressful. "Houston, we have a problem" level of stressful. Anyway. It led to me eating away my worries and my dread of the next workday in the evenings. As a result, in three years, I've gained weight from 75 kg to 93 kg. Surprisingly, it's not very noticeable "from the outside", but I began to feel sluggish, more tired, breathing harder, and sweating more profusely.

Some time ago, I decided to take the first steps toward losing weight (cross that out), toward feeling more energetic, more effectively de-stressing after work, and mentally relaxing and resting.

So, here's what I do: in the evening after work, I do one set of push-ups (as many reps as I can, to failure), recover my heart rate, do the same number of squats as I did push-ups, recover my heart rate, jog in place (or in a circle) for 21 minutes, recover my heart rate, and shower.

Importantly, I do this routine every other day to give my arms and ankles at least a little recovery.

After each exercise, I measure my heart rate and get practically the same number - 160 beats per minute. It's quite high, but it works and is safe for my age (I'm 35).

Now the funny stuff.

I'm a big fan of historical steppe nomads and the accompanying elements of Romanian, Hungarian, and Polish culture (in a sense, I'm their descendant). Therefore (someone may find this funny or crazy), I run holding a fokos (a shepherd's axe about a meter long and weighing about 1 kg) in my hand. I came up with a funny name for this activity – "Hungarian Dance" (yeah yeah, greetings, mister Johannes Brahms). When I don't have my fokos with me, I pick up a more compact spike tomahawk, which I always carry in my backpack. This makes the exercises more interesting and helps me "get into character" and distracts me from the nervous thoughts I often bring home from work.

And this routine really works. Of course, I won't lose weight anytime soon, but at least I've eliminated the reasons why I was gaining weight. In any case, it helps me relax, distract myself, give my heart, muscles, and joints a reasonable workout, it can be done at home, it doesn't take much time, and it doesn't cost money (well, I've had my fokos and spikehawk for a long time now).

What's the point of all this?

Each of us can start feeling a little better, and this step is very easy. I guess that's all I wanted to say. And yeah, I know, the specific details of my exercises may seem wild to some, but we all do things that entertain us and help us feel more joyful and happier.

Thank you for your time. I sincerely DO hope that this little example will help someone fall on the right side of the fence.

I can't help but think that Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5 and Rust Cohle from True Detective share "some common hues in their worldviews." Is there a slight chance that Joseph was at least partially inspired by this character?

u/StruzhkaOpilka — 1 month ago

Before I say what I'm about to say, I'll clarify one important detail, guys. I'm on this side of the fence, and I understand all your pain, because I live with it myself.

I'm over 30, I've never been married.

I've had a couple of long-term relationships with a girl. But the first time, she simply lived with me to make someone else jealous. The second time, she was interested in my property, and as soon as I started having problems with work (and money), the relationship quickly ended.

Love, mutual support, and mutual understanding between a man and a woman do not exist in the human world, just as they do not exist in the world of all other living beings. People use each other. Period. It cannot be otherwise. It cannot be fixed. Don't fool yourself.

Accept it.

Also accept the fact that some of us are dealt a lucky hand of cards at birth, and some are not.

Genes decide a lot.

How handsome, strong, tall, charismatic, smart, rich you are. Damn it, genes decide a lot about when you'll go bald. Genes decide whether you'll look normal without hair or be ashamed of your flat head. Genes decide a lot. And you don't choose your genes when you're born. You accept them as a given. A lot of it is predetermined by genetics and background, and a lot of it can't be changed.

We're left to play the cards we're dealt.

Some things can't be changed, and believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

Accept it.

If you were born ugly, sickly, with certain mental characteristics, and on top of that, you were raised poorly as a child and suffered mental trauma - that's almost never going to be fixed. And stop blaming yourself. There are things beyond your control and for which you're not responsible. Just accept the fact that you'll most likely be alone and die alone.

And that's fucking okay. That's just damn fine.

Try to catch up with something else in this life if you can't catch up with someone else's vagina. Show yourself and the world that even you, to whom life dealt a shitty deck of cards, were able to do something that someone to whom life dealt a lucky deck couldn't. And then you'll say to yourself, "I had it harder than them, but in the end I did something they couldn't."

And female attention, guys, is temporary, fleeting, and false. That's just a fact. And dependence on female attention will destroy you precisely when you're most vulnerable. And take my word for it, even sex can become satiated, and it happens very quickly. Much quicker than you imagine. Constantly seeking female attention is not something worth living for, guys.

Find another hobby. It will save your life.

[RDR2] Do not read if you have not completed Chapter 3, as this post contains reflections on the antagonists of that chapter.

It was a rather cunning move on Catherine Braithwaite's part. She could easily have killed Arthur and Hosea on the spot, but instead she sent them to distribute liquor on Gray property.

I see several reasons for this.

First, she kept her hands clean. She knew perfectly well that if Arthur and Hosea actually went to distribute liquor, word would quickly reach the Lemoyne raiders, who would quickly show up and kill Arthur and Hosea, at least for stealing booze. Perhaps Catherine tipped off the raiders, perhaps that wasn't even necessary.

Second, by sending Arthur and Hosea to distribute liquor for free, she demonstratively and openly "pooped in someone else's yard," pointing out to the Grays (and the sheriff, too) their own worthlessness.

Third, if the raiders had managed to kill Arthur and Hosea while distributing the liquor, it would have served as a striking act of "public execution" and a warning to anyone else not to steal from the Braithwaites, as it will end badly.

Fourth, Catherine's actions seemed to say, "You want to steal my goods stealthily, like swamp rats, hiding behind your law enforcement badges? Fine, cowards and disgraces! I will crush you, using your own greed and stupidity."

Fifth, if Arthur and Hosea had been afraid to go into town and distribute the stolen liquor, Catherine would have shown them once again that they were common cowards and idiots who couldn't carry out their own "daring" theft to its logical conclusion.

Sixth, she only gave Arthur and Hosea ten bucks so they could go distribute the liquor in town, clearly risking their lives. With this, Catherine showed how little Arthur and Hosea valued their lives.

This woman is much smarter than many of the men around her. A chess player.

[KCD2] I really like the style chosen for the soundtrack. It reminds me of historical films from the 60s and 70s.

I haven't seen anything about Žižka or the Hussite Wars, BUT I have seen Jerzy Hoffman's adaptations of Sienkiewicz's Polish novels about the 17th-century szlachta and several films about Hungarian haiduks waging guerrilla warfare against the Turkish occupation. And I must say, the people who selected and created the soundtrack for the KCD games definitely had that era of cinema in mind. IMHO it fits really good.

[KCD2] [KCD1] [OTHER] The only antagonist who never managed to ignite any animosity in me. I still consider him a true nobleman and a man of honor who was simply doing his bloody dirty job.

u/StruzhkaOpilka — 2 months ago

Bailiff Hanko Goathead. Cool guy, I like him. He wears a cool chaperon in the colors of his liege's coat of arms, a matching gambeson/pourpoint, a cool mustache, and shiny greaves. I'm guessing he's not of noble birth, and could very well be a peasant. He speaks with a German accent, which sounds cool (I always think of Sam Becker from Far Cry 3). He answered the "call of duty" of his superiors and showed up with a militia of 20 soldiers. He likes to play dice, and has a hussar-like passion for gambling. He enjoys making jokes at the expense of other aristocrats, but, not being a bully, he's never averse to apologizing if he sees his jokes offend someone's honor. He's always ready to offer satisfaction in a sword duel, but only if absolutely necessary. Perhaps, as a minor commander, he was used to testing the mettle of his entourage in this way to understand who he was dealing with, but it doesn't seem like he's eager to provoke anyone into a duel. He doesn't give the impression of a bloodthirsty jerk ready to demonstrate his superiority at any cost. He survived the ambush (perhaps by feigning death or fleeing, but that's not shameful, given the circumstances). He ultimately admitted that his home village was devastated and widowed, and that it was likely a mistake to answer the "call of duty," but what can you do? That's the life of servicemen; they don't control their own lives.

I'm glad to see video games portray believable characters without all the one-sided heroic "Hoo-Rah" nonsense. When you consider the fates of individual characters, like Hanko Goathead, you even begin to see an anti-war subtext in the tradition of Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms." A nice touch.

And once again, to the sounds of djembe and the rustle of unmown wild grass, I saw the rays of the sun setting over the savannah break through the crown of an acacia tree, and, bouncing off the long blade of a rusty machete, blinding my tired red eyes, squinted by dry, cracked eyelids covered in sand.

Seriously, the gamer's soul craves minimalism, truly dangerous enemies once again, invisible in the tall grass (and not marked on the HUD), throwing grenades (also not marked on the HUD), wild flames devouring everything in their path, and a map that you actually need to pick up and unfold.

Far Cry 2 was the Dark Souls of shooters long before Dark Souls was released.

Remember what happened to the protagonist when he "died"? He was given a "second life," a so-called "buddy" came to his aid, injected him with painkillers, and helped him take up a defensive position.

In short, I have three problems, which I will list in order of decreasing importance:

  • Ubi doesn't want to release a Far Cry 2 remake,
  • it's not legally possible to buy a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in my country,
  • I have lumbago, it's very serious
