I killed my hamster because she was ugly, bald, and greedy

I’m sorry guys- but I could not handle her unsightly appearances and gluttony any longer- so I killed her. Hope you understand and feel the same way. Creatures like this just don’t deserve to live.

uj/ >!the actual story is she had Cushing’s disease and I decided to euthanize her this past February when it was clear her quality of life had deteriorated despite medication. I then lost a mouse in May and another last week, so I am really feeling her absence now more than ever!< >!❤️!<

Regret over not euthanizing my mouse sooner

Long story short- my mouse’s health has declined rapidly over the last week and a half. We went to the ER over the weekend and he was stable enough to come home. We followed up with our primary vet early this week and while the prognosis wasn’t good, we decided to still give a chance for the treatment to kick in and reconvene in two weeks.

This morning right after I gave him his medication, he all of a sudden turned for the worse. We immediately went to the ER. I anticipated us not coming home together, but still opted to get x-rays done to confirm that his condition had progressed to the point of no return and to get closure and clarity on what happened.

We get the x-rays back and he was in acute organ failure, and it was then I decided to put him down. As I was saying my goodbyes, he started seizing, the vet tech took him away, and he passed on his own seconds later.

I feel so guilty for not putting him down when we were at our primary vet earlier this week. And I feel selfish for wanting to get x-rays today, despite it probably not changing the outcome. It pains me that my delay in putting him down meant he suffered a painful death rather than dying peacefully.

I know I did the best I could at the time with what I knew- but I still feel like I failed him. My last memory of him was seeing him seize.

Marbles is in Mousey Heaven

My little boy passed to the other side this morning from organ failure. We went to the ER but it was too late and he passed on his own.

He was a very cute yet shy mama’s boy. He lived a good life. My only regret was not putting him down sooner. It was our third time to the vet in the last week- but he seemed fine enough to try and treat with medication and recheck.

If anything good can come from this- I hope he is a reminder to us all that a week early is between than a day late. Mice hide pain incredibly well, and it wasn’t until his final 2 hours that it became apparent how sick he was.

Suspected Lung Cancer

Long story short, my boy Marbles has been having difficultly breathing the last week.

We ended up going to the ER over the weekend, and they suspected pneumonia and provided antibiotics.

Of course Marbles refuses to take his meds, and so we followed up with our regular primary today (would have followed up regardless with them- but was more urgent due to medication refusal).

After an exam, vet suspects lung cancer and not pneumonia. Not the news I was hoping for, and I’m saddened knowing he has weeks if not days left on this planet 😢

Has anyone else dealt with cancer not from tumors? There’s obviously no mass that can be removed, and there isn’t any treatment for the cancer apart from euthanasia.

Microwaveable/Spillproof Non-Glass Soup Containers?

As per the title- I’m curious if any of you have recommendations for microwaveable, spillproof non-glass soup containers?

Looking for something for soup to bring to work, but need something that will withstand getting tossed and turned a bit in the lunch fridge, and it can’t be glass or ceramic per work policies.

TIA!

I think my hamster is going to kill me in my sleep

Just got a new hamster this past weekend. While I was at work, I checked the cameras to see how’s settling in.

Here she is- looking like a flattened rat staring into my soul. I think she’s plotting my demise as I type this.

I’m no longer hamster-less (plus need name ideas)

Not my first hamster, but after my last one passed earlier this year from lots of health complications, I needed a bit of a break from hamsters and focused on keeping mice.

I finally feel ready to get back into keeping hamsters, and so I got this precious girl this weekend. She’s the size of a guinea pig and has the energy level of a child on crack. I need some help naming her!

Shame This Sloth/Glutton- See Second Pic for Orb

This is my mouse Marbles.

He sits on his wheel all day doing nothing instead of running and is now a circle.

Please shame him.

Hantavirus stigma from others

I have two male mice (in separate cages- included obligatory mouse tax). With all of the news coverage on hantavirus, I’ve had a handful of people express concern over the animal’s and my safety.

I try and assure them that hantavirus is rare in my region, much of the spread is due to feces and not handling the animal itself, and the chances of pet mice who grew up in captivity having it is virtually zero. Despite this attempted education, people are still skeptical and concerned.

Has anyone had any luck with trying to educate their friends and family who are concerned of hantavirus as it relates to pet mice? I in no way want to discount the severity of the disease or the chances of exposure in high-risk areas, but frankly I think the news has gone a little overboard on coverage in order to sensationalize and stigmatize rodents even more than they already are. There are already enough people out there who view rodents as nothing but diseased and dirty vermin. There is very little nuance of wild versus pet mice- they’re just all seen as disgusting.
