Need to remove mother-of-pearl buttons before dyeing?

Hi all, I am pretty crafty but new to this sub. I have a linen shirt with mother of pearl buttons I would like to overdye. Is it advisable to remove the buttons before dyeing the shirt? I am planning to dye it red, I wouldn't mind if the buttons turned a bit pink in the process, but I am wondering if it is necessary to full remove and then re-sew the buttons on for reasons I am unfamiliar with.

For context, I have dyed plain cotton fabric before, just never anything with buttons. Thank you!

I made a playlist of all of the animals in classical works for us

Hi all, I was so happy to get so many responses to my question yesterday about classical works inspired by animals in some way. People really came through with the cats, whales, insects, dogs, lions, etc. etc.

I made a spotify playlist of all of the recomendations, if you are interested. I will like go through and add and subtract as I give it a listen, to tailor it to my specific taste, but you are welcome to listen.

A fun exercise - what classical works are inspired by animals?

Hi all, I am simply looking for more classical works to listen to while working.

I love Carnival of the Animals and I am presenting listening to the Lark Ascending.

Are there other classical works inspired by or referencing animals that I should know about and listen to? TIA, have a good day :)

If you have used noro (or a similar self striping) to do a colorwork sweater, can I see?

Hi all, I am considering buying some noro because it complements other yarns I have in stash, and then I would have enough for a fun colorwork sweater.

If you have used noro in a stranded colorwork sweater and you have a photo, can I see? I am just looking for inspiraiton and examples. Thank you!

Best Farm Markets near DC? (not our weekly farmers markets)

Hi all, I am origininally from the midwest and have the itch to make a trip to a farm market, within driving distance of DC. Like the kind of place where you can buy your pies and huge jugs of apple cider. I can't explain it better, but like the ones you would see in Minnesota or Ohio or Wisconsin off of a rural highway.

I am not asking for our regular farmers markets that happen on Saturdays or Sundays, one of the permanent building farm markets. TIA!

Best way to contact Skye Car Hire or Kyle Taxi Service? Email or WhatsApp preferred?

Hi all, I am going to Scotland in a few months, and am planning to take the train from Edinburgh to Kyle, and then rent a car in Kyle to use to visit the Isle of Skye. I contacted Skye Care Hire and Kyle Taxi service to enquire about renting a car from them, but have not heard back yet. For Skye Car Hire, I used the online contact form and for Kyle Taxi Service, I sent an email. I am just nervous about planning is all, haha.

Is there a preferred method of contacting folks? For instance, do Scots run their businesses through WhatsApp more than email as in other parts of the world? Thank you and take care!

Splitting time between Oban and Inverness or just Inverness?

Hello all! I’ll be traveling to Scotland in mid September with an older parent of mine.

We’re flying in and out of Edinburgh. We’ll do 2 days in Edinburgh after arrival and 2 days before our departure.

This gives us six days - I am wondering if it makes sense to go from Edinburgh, spend two nights/one full day in Oban, and then continue to Inverness, before returning to Edinburgh, or just do Edinburgh - Inverness - Edinburgh. We want to rely on train and public transport as much as possible. I’m willing to rent a car for a day here and there as needed though.

If you were to spend all six days in the middle of the trip based in Inverness, what would you do? I’m mainly worried that’s too much time in Inverness, but squeezing in Oban might be too much train travel.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I know Inverness is not interesting in itself, it’s used mainly as a place to sleep and venture from. So that’s what I’m asking, is there 6 days worth of stuff to do around Inverness? Or some other combo of train-based travel across Scotland?

Roll call! Please show me how your are styling your sunflower bags

Hi all, I’m on the fence about getting a bag - can I see how you’ve styled the sunflower colorway?

Thank you!

Apologies if I used the wrong flair - I’m new to posting in the baggu sub

Where to hang out in Reykjavik before hotel check-in after an overnight flight from the states?

Hi all, I and a family member will be flying from the east coast of the USA and landing in Reykjavik at about 7am, and hotel check-in is firmly at 3pm. Where should we hang out in Reykjavik for several hours when we have not had much sleep? Ideally some place quiet we can sit around for a few hours.

Is it okay to hang out at Harpa? If you were in a similar situation, what did you do? Thanks

Art featuring french fries?

Hi all, odd request for a lightheared ppt party and my topic is French Fries....know of any artworks prominently featuring french fries?

I've found Claes Oldenburg's French Fries and Ketchup, Mel Ramos's Fraulien French Fries, and Terry Border's Bent Objects so far but ideally I'd have more to talk about. TIA

What’s your fave French fry fact?

Hi all, I’m having a ppt party with friends soon (literally a party where each guest gives a silly ppt presentation)

I’ve been assigned the topic of the French fry emoji, so I was wondering if my fellow potato heads had any fun French fry facts, controversies, famous French fries (eg was one shaped like Jesus and sold for $1 million, etc), etc. the wackier the better!

Adding lining on a ruched/gathered bodice

Hi all, I’m sewing Simplicity 9678

I’m doing view C, and it has a gathered neckline. If I want to add a lining in addition to the facing that’s called for on the bodice, should I just cut another piece for the bodice out of the lining fabric, and gather the lining?

Or should I draft a lining piece that’s the same shape as the facing, and extend the sides + length a bit to fully cover the bodice?

I’m not sure if gathering in a lining piece adds too much bulk.

My fabrics isn’t sheer per se, but I’d like a little more coverage

First photo is my fabric - bodice front + interfacing already ironed on to the facing piece
Second photo is a shot of the instructions showing how eventually the bodice and interfacing should be sewn, no lining because the pattern doesn’t call for it
Third photo is view C

Anyone else with Starry internet still on a blackout?

Starry emailed me Friday afternoon saying local construction has interrupted service + that they expected it to last through the holiday weekend. I haven’t heard anything since, and I still don’t have internet.

Is anyone else having this issue? Curious how widespread it is.

The cafe I’m working from near my house has their Internet working just fine, so I assume it’s just Starry.

Single ply Teddy or Boucle yarns

Hi all, I’ve never knit with any Teddy or Boucle yarns before, but I’m tempted to order some from the latest drop from Superglo Fibre. I’ve knit her yarns before and love them, so typically I don’t have reservations ordering from her.

However, I don’t like knitting with single ply yarns because I feel they come loose too easily/pull too easily. Are all teddy or Boucle yarns listed as single ply because of how they have to be made for the texture? Or do you think this base (pictured) would hold up well, despite being listed as 1-ply? I’m just not sure what to expect from this type of yarn.

Thank you!

Be honest…does this look like a bunny?

I have NOT added the face yet, so that will help. But overall, does this look like a bunny to you?

It’s my first stuffed toy, my family thinks it looks messed up. I think partially the pattern in the fabric is distracting, and the fabric was difficult to work with, so some of the seam lines are warped, but I think that overall it looks like a bunny.

This is just my sample with random fabric I had around; curious if it’s worth it to try again, or if others don’t see a bunny at all

Hi all,

Having one of those days where I just do. not. want. to workout at all. I made myself push through the yoga class I was doing, but definitely made me grumpier because I was holding poses for so long in this class (nothing wrong with the class, just not what I was in the mood or very willing to power through).

Do you have any classes that you turn to when you're just not in the mood to workout?

Preference for yoga, pilates, and dumbell workouts. TIA!
