All i need is a witness to motivate myself and achieve my potential

I've thought about the topic of motivation, discipline, achieving one's potential for many years now.

I know of many levers that can help motivating oneself.

But a couple of things are an absolute fundamental base for motivation.

  1. If it's not necessary, working towards your goals cannot hurt you. If it gives you a painful experience you won't do it again.

On the other hand, if it's necessary, a lot of people go through the hurt and pain as well.

Like single mothers going to work long hours for their kids. I believe it's because they are overriding all their mental blocks because they have to be fully present in the now, because it's not a distant dream, it's a necessity. If they don't go to work, something bad might happen at work and that's the only source of income they have.

  1. Now the main point. A witness. The problem of procrastination comes with long-term dreams. At least for me, that comes with a lot of baggage, it's really painful to try and work every day. It feels like a lot of negative thoughts come, though right now i am practicing pointing these thoughts toward reality and keep assuring myself that it's not true.

Thoughts like "I am worthless", "I will never be able to do this" are slowly losing power. It takes a good amount of time and effort though.

Now, the reason i wrote the first point in this post was to give a good example of what i call "Override functions" as i call them. There are certain things that can just help you override your own mental baggage. For example, the single mother is going to work every day and taking care of the kids. She is no longer procrastinating. She is doing an amazing thing in such a difficult situation.

Now how to achieve this in a non-necessary side of things. Like it'd okay if you didn't do that specific thing today. Like you want to be a musician one day, but it's not the end of the world today if you didn't practice the guitar. Like working in this moment doesn't matter too much. Coupled with the fact that it's mentally painful and draining to work on that thing, it feels like a better option to not work on it today.

So, what to do in such a case?

I believe at least for me, having a "witness" triggers an override function in the brain of being "watched". I believe this is the same reason that people can work in offices when the boss is watching or study in classes when the teacher is watching.

Now let's go into detail.

I do not believe any random person can trigger the feeling of being watched. It should be someone you respect as well, otherwise you wouldn't hold their opinion as valuable.

Added, if you have made a promise to that person of working today, much better.

Also, I believe it should be continuous and not like a "Daily check-in" at night that most accountability partners do. It should be very short-term like an hour.

This is the exact reason I wrote a python script that literally tracks my active window every hour so i can send it to my accountability partner and she can verify using AI for faster verification.

Now, being watched is one layer, the second layer would 'involvement in your goal'.

When someone genuinely cares about your goals, and talks to you about them and prays of your success. Brother, you have no idea how motivating it can be. Just a little encouragement from a real person and you will suddenly feel all those mental blocks going away.

Now, this is all my experience and i am not saying this is the objective truth of what everyone feels, but i have seen a lot of people go through this.

Alone, it's very hard to motivate yourself. But right people in real-time can transform you into your best versions.

If you want to be that kind of accountability buddies with me, hit me a DM. I am always looking for people like that

Sorry if post was messy, i didn't plan it and just wrote what i felt as i kept going.

Genuinely Interested accountability partner

This post will be long, but it will be necessary and detailed.

Throughout history, no one great has been created through working alone. They always had friends, peers, rivals and teachers.

I have studied motivation, procrastination for many many years now.

And the scary realization, I have come to is - I can't work unless the work gives me some positive feelings.

I think that's true for most people.

Working alone, I can't congratulate myself. I can't get excited, it's like trying to hug myself which doesn't work.

Now, that means I generate negative feelings towards work.

Which further reinforces the cycle of procrastination.

The way to solve this is to solve the problems in my mind, which will take a long time. (Identity issues etc) and even after that my motivation won't be at 100%

So is there a faster way? Yes.

The crazy thing i've discovered is that you don't have to solve all your problems.

You can override them

The quickest way to override them is to work in front of people.

There is a reason that people can work in an office when the boss is watching or the student can study when the teacher is watching.

But they fail to work on their grand dreams, which they consider grander than the hustle of work that they do in front of the boss everyday.

This brain's override functions of overriding all identity and motivation problems when being watched is truly incredible.

This can be amplified by being surrounded be people who are rivals, friends, teachers, people equally obsessed with dreams, even if they are different from you.

So what i want is a partner who will talk with me, will give a crap about my passion, and will check in on my constantly.

Not someone who will do it at the end of the day or something, that doesn't work for me.

And frankly through my study it won't work for most people.

I have created a python bot that will log my activity for specific duration of the day, it logs my active windows each minute. At the end of the session, I can send you the log and a prompt to put in the chatgpt. It can comb through the logs to tell you the non-productive winodws and you can confront me in necessary.

If this seems extreme to you, believe me it is necessary.

I have thought of so many factors and went through so much trial and error when it comes to motivation and procrastination. My way is solid.

If you are equally obsessed, hit me a DM

Free て-form Master Sheet – 100 Practice Sentences + Answer Key

Many of my students struggled with the て-form in JLPT N5, so I made a free 1% improvement worksheet with 100 sentences, extra questions and answer keys for them.

It includes:

  • 100 practice sentences
  • All N5 (and a little N4) て-form usage
  • Practice questions with answer keys
  • Lots of repeated verbs and grammar patterns to help reinforce everything through repetition instead of just memorization.

Thank you so much for all the support on my free "You" document. It feels great that people outside the class are finding it actually useful (helps with imposter syndrome hehe)

I'm also hosting a free live masterclass where I'll cover all the major て-form usages and answer questions directly. There are multiple time slots depending on your time zone if you'd like to join.
