Panchanga:- Forgotten Foundation of Vedic Astrology.
You know how it feels when you can sense the energy of the universe and be fully and completely aware about the dynamic going on outside your idea of existence…
In our Sanatan Vedic tradition our Rishis (Seers) introduced this thing called Panchanga to actually know and be aware about the ongoing scenario of the universe, so they called Panchanga. Meaning of this word Panchanga is:- 5 limbs, 5 limbs of what?
The core 5 limbs of mother nature(प्रकृति):-
- Fire (Agni Tattva)
- Water (Jala Tattva)
- Wind (Vayu Tattva)
- Earth (Prithvi Tattva)
- Sky (Aakash Tattva)
Now these five elements are core of our existence. When you see completely and beyond them, you won’t be able to see anything, but your true source of origin..
As the microcosm so the macrocosm, as the macrocosm so the microcosm…
Now let’s understand what is the concept of such a thing,
See with life, you have been provided with two main things
- Destiny.
- Free- Will.
Now whatever amount of free will you carry, It will allow you to reach certain places where you can truly be aware about your existence and it will function according to your destiny, so Panchanga and Jyotish and all the things inside its vast ocean allows you to see certain things and accept them as your fate before hand, so that you do not make mistake and let the things unfold as they ought to be.
Again this is the game of destiny and free Will.
Same way Panchanga allows you to see what mother nature is going to reveal today, we all know about lunar phases of moon, waxing, and wanning.
Let’s understand their working,
When Moon goes towards Purnima It is waxing phase of Moon & we say the moon is strong why because it can reflect back the light of Sun (Atman).
Now let’s talk about five elements and their usage in both Mundane & Spiritual Terms:-
" चंद्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत।
मुखादिन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च प्राणाद्वायुरजायत॥"
"The Moon was born from the Mind of the Cosmic Purusha; the Sun from His eye. Indra and Agni arose from His mouth; Vayu from His Prana."-Rig Veda X.90.13 (Purusha Sukta)
- TITHI (Jala Tattva)
- Tithi is based upon the movement of both Sun and Moon, the way they come in contact with each other. We deduct their longitudinal difference and then we say how far they are for the day.
"सूर्यमण्डलमध्यस्थो विशेषेण सदा शुभः।
भवेच्च योगआख्यातो विज्ञेयस्तु विजानता॥"
"The Tithi is the sacred measure of the Moon's distance from the Sun — every 12 degrees of separation is one Tithi, the fundamental unit through which cosmic time organizes itself into 30 sacred intervals of the lunar month." -Surya Siddhanta (classical definition of Tithi)
\\\*\\\*Material\\\*\\\*:- Tithi in the material world shows how you come in contact with others, basically how you make relations and your public image and the way you get impressed while doing something.
In waxing cycle we have high metabolism and more initiative energy towards creation whereas waning phase offers detox and withdrawal from humanly senses.
"शुक्लपक्षे तु यः कुर्यात् कृष्णे कुर्यान्न तत्क्रिया।
शुक्लःसर्वत्र शुभदः कृष्णः शत्रुक्षयाय च॥"
"In Shukla Paksha (waxing), initiate and create; in Krishna Paksha (waning), do not begin those same actions. Shukla is auspicious for all beginnings; Krishna is for the destruction of obstacles and enemies."-Muhurta Chintamani
\\\*\\\*Spiritual\\\*\\\*:- Every Tithi acts as a mirror to your inner self. As when the mind (Chitta) revolves here and there in search of something, it reveals the nature of life and the exact desire of your rebirth.
"मनो हि द्विविधं प्रोक्तं शुद्धं चाशुद्धमेव च।
अशुद्धं कामसंकल्पं शुद्धं कामविवर्जितम्॥"
"The mind alone is declared to be of two kinds — the pure and the impure. The impure is filled with desire and intention; the pure is free from desire entirely."-Amritabindu Upanishad, Verse 1
(The Tithi tells you each day where on this spectrum the collective mind is resting — closer to the Sun's purity or deeper in the Moon's longing.)
Mind when reflects the light completely as in the illumination of Sun during Amavasya.
Amavasya Notes
When Moon (Manas) mind of us humans is ready to absorb the rays of Sun (Atman), this is said to be powerful for attaining Moksha.
"अमावास्यां नमस्कुर्यात् पितॄंश्चैव महात्मनः।
सिद्धये मोक्षसम्प्राप्तौ तथा सर्वफलप्रदा॥"
"On Amavasya, offer salutations to the great souls among the ancestors. For the attainment of Siddhi and Moksha alike, this Tithi is the giver of all fruits."-Garuda Purana
This is why our sages spoke highly about the waning Moon.
In waning Moon the material possibilities come to an end as the last nights are like a portal to new realms.
Amavasya is the Tithi to dissolve within.
Here Sun consumes the Moon properly and only certain kinds of forces work here.
"अमायां तु विशेषेण सूर्यचन्द्रौ समागतौ।
तमस्तिमिरसंपूर्णे काले मुक्तिप्रदायके॥"
"On Amavasya especially, the Sun and Moon come together as one. In the time filled with the fullness of darkness — liberation is given." - Devi Bhagavata Purana
Every sort of Abhichara / Black Magic has been said to be done on Amavasya as on this Tithi vitality weakens and we become a gateway to all kinds of forces.
Hence Amavasya is also said to be very powerful because it is a portal to everything.
"तिथयस्तु त्रयोदश शुभाः स्युर्मुनिसत्तमाः।
अमावास्या तु सर्वेषां विशिष्टा परमा स्मृता॥"
"Among the Tithis, thirteen are considered auspicious, O great sages. But Amavasya above all others is remembered as the most singular and the most supreme." -Skanda Purana
- \\\*\\\*VARA\\\*\\\*
Vara relates to the Agni Tattva of our body.
It means to dwell in something, to let yourself get consumed by something.
"आदित्यादि ग्रहाः सप्त स्वस्वदिने प्रवर्तकाः।
ते एव सर्वजीवानां सुखदुःखप्रदायकाः॥"
"The seven planets from the Sun onward are the rulers of their respective days. They alone are the givers of happiness and sorrow to all living beings."
\\\*\\\*Material:-\\\*\\\* Each Vara has an operating system and it is not arbitrary.
It manifests as an individual doing the same sort of work as the energy of the Varesha.
Example: On Wednesday, which is ruled by Mercury, you will be doing documentation-related work, travel, trade, chit-chat, communication with friends.
This is the core energy of Wednesday.
"रविवारे रविस्तुल्यं सोमे सोमसमं भवेत्।
भौमे भौमसमं कर्म बुधे बुधसमं तथा॥"
"On Sunday, actions take the quality of the Sun. On Monday, the Moon's quality prevails. On Tuesday, Mars's nature governs. On Wednesday, Mercury's intelligence rules." - Muhurta Martanda (classical muhurta text)
Likewise every other planet and Vara can vary from chart to chart.
Spiritual
Every day carries planetary energy.
Looking at your chart, planets decide whether that day you will work on your soul or not.
In general it can be classified according to Guna, Tattva and deity of all planets.
"सूर्यो विष्णुः स्वयं साक्षात् सोमश्चैव महेश्वरः।
भौमो रक्तश्च सुब्रह्मण्यः सौम्यो विष्णुसुतः स्मृतः।
बृहस्पतिर्ब्रह्मदेवः शुक्रः शक्तिसमुद्भवः।
शनिर्यमः प्रतिज्ञातः सप्तदेवाः ग्रहात्मकाः॥"
"The Sun is Vishnu himself. The Moon is Maheshvara. Mars is the red-hued Subrahmanya. Mercury is remembered as the son of Vishnu. Jupiter is Brahma the Creator. Venus is born of the divine Shakti. Saturn is Yama the lord of dharma — these seven deities are the very soul of the seven Grahas." - Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Graha Devata Adhyaya
Example: Sunday and Monday are days where one can worship Shiva (Supreme Consciousness).
- \\\*\\\*NAKSHATRA\\\*\\\*
It relates to Vayu Tattva in the body.
The Prana Nakshatra is one of the most valuable as it decides the whole journey of life according to our Prarabdha.
"नक्षत्राणामहं शशी।"
"Among the Nakshatras, I am the Moon."
Bhagavad Gita X.21 (Krishna's self-declaration)
"नक्षत्राणि च तारा च चन्द्रमाः सहितः सदा।
ऋषयश्च महाभागा ये च तद्गतमानसाः॥"
"The Nakshatras and stars with the Moon always present — and the great sages whose minds are eternally dwelling in them — all abide in the eternal cosmic order." - Vishnu Purana
\\\*\\\*Material\\\*\\\*:- Certain Nakshatras carry certain energies of a day which become the theme of the whole day.
Our minds work in that sort only.
Example: Rohini is the Nakshatra of creation, nurturing and growth.
So starting farming, embroidery, any work related to art and craft in Rohini is fruitful.
"नक्षत्राणां प्रसादेन मानवानां शुभाशुभम्।
ज्ञायते सर्वमेवैतत् तस्माद् नक्षत्रमादिशेत्॥"
"By the grace of the Nakshatras, all that is auspicious and inauspicious for human beings is known. Therefore, one should always observe the Nakshatra."
\\\\-Taittiriya Brahmana III.1
\\\*\\\*Spiritual\\\*\\\*:- Nakshatras play a very significant role when it comes to spirituality and deity attunement.
"एकं नक्षत्रमाश्रित्य चन्द्रो भ्रमति नित्यशः।
तद्देवताः प्रपूजय्य सिद्धिं प्राप्नोति मानवः॥"
"The Moon moves daily through one Nakshatra, abiding in it. By worshipping the deity of that Nakshatra, a human being attains spiritual fulfillment."
\\\\-Skanda Purana, Jyotisha Khanda
A Nakshatra in Panchang will help you in starting new Sadhanas and practices as well as carrying the energies of a particular deity.
Example: Ardra carries the energy of Rudra, so any Sadhana of Rudra can be taken in Ardra Nakshatra.
"यत् तद् ब्रह्मपरं धाम नक्षत्रेषु प्रतिष्ठितम्।
नक्षत्रात्मानमात्मानं वेद यः स विमुच्यते॥"
"That supreme Brahman, the highest abode, is established in the Nakshatras. One who knows the Self as the Soul of all Nakshatras — that one is liberated." - Atharva Veda, XIX.7 (Nakshatra Sukta)
- KARANA
Karana is half of a Tithi.
It means to do something which is related to the effect of Karma.
The way your things will connect or coincide in life.
"करणं कर्मसाधनम्कर्म बन्धाय जायते।
शुभे करणे शुभकर्म अशुभे विपरीतकम्॥"
"Karana is the instrument of Karma — the means through which action occurs. In an auspicious Karana, action brings auspicious results; in an inauspicious Karana, the reverse." -Muhurta Chintamani, Karana Adhyaya
\\\*\\\*Material\\\*\\\*:- Karana holds Prithvi Tattva.
It reveals the Amount of wealth you can behold
The way you do things in life
The way your purpose unfolds..
"विष्टिर्बद्रा च शकुनिश्चतुष्पादश्च नागकः।
किंस्तुघ्नश्च स्थिराः पञ्च चरा एव च सप्त च॥"
"Vishti (Bhadra), Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, and Kimstughna are the five fixed Karanas. Seven movable ones complete the eleven — each half of a Tithi holding the precise quality of cosmic action for that moment." -Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Karana Prakarana
\\\*\\\*Spiritual\\\*\\\*:- There are certain Karanas which trigger spiritual things only in certain Tithis.
They ask you to rest for a while rather than doing certain things in life at that moment.
"किंस्तुघ्नः प्रथमः पुण्यः शुभकर्मसु शस्यते।
विष्ट्यां वर्जयेत् कार्यं शुभमारम्भमेव च॥"
"Kimstughna is the first and most auspicious Karana — it is praised for all auspicious actions and new beginnings. During Vishti (Bhadra) Karana, all auspicious work and new beginnings must be avoided."- Muhurta Martanda
(Kimstughna — destroyer of evil — opens every Shukla Paksha as the cosmic reset point, the half-breath through which the universe exhales the old and inhales the new. This is the Karana of divine beginning.)
- \\\*\\\*YOGA\\\*\\\*
Yoga carries the Akasha Tattva.
It is the joint sum of both Sun and Moon where they decide what shall the universe be showing for the day.
"सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्योगः सप्तविंशतिधा स्थितः।
विष्कम्भाद्याः स्मृता योगाः शुभाशुभविवेकदाः॥"
"The Yoga is the combined position of Sun and Moon, existing in twenty-seven forms from Vishkambha onward. These Yogas are the revealers of what is auspicious and what is inauspicious for each day."-Surya Siddhanta, Yoga Prakarana
\\\*\\\*Material\\\*\\\*:- It represents the way you interact with the world and try to build relationships.
Example: Yoga of Indra carries energy of a king and authority.
A native under this can find himself leading in life.
"सिद्धियोगेकृतं कर्म सिद्धिं याति न संशयः।
व्यतीपाते च वैधृत्ये वर्जयेच्छुभकर्म च॥"
"Work performed under Siddhi Yoga attains perfection — there is no doubt. Under Vyatipata and Vaidhriti, all auspicious work must be avoided."-Muhurta Chintamani
\\\*\\\*Spiritual\\\*\\\*:- Yoga is of great importance as it carries the energy of deities and also indicates how well you build your connection with them.
"ब्रह्मयोगे विशेषेण ब्रह्मकर्म समाचरेत्।
इन्द्रयोगे च राजकर्म सिद्धियोगे च सिद्धिदम्॥"
"Under Brahma Yoga especially, perform actions related to sacred knowledge and Brahman. Under Indra Yoga, royal and leadership actions. Under Siddhi Yoga, that which must be perfected."-Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
"कालोस्मि लोकक्षयकृत् प्रवृद्धो लोकान् समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः।"
"I am Time, the great destroyer of worlds, fully matured and engaged here to gather in all that exists."
\\\\\\\~ Bhagavad Gita XI.32 (Krishna revealing himself as Time (Kala)the very force the Panchanga reads)
The Final Teaching:
\\\*The Panchanga is not merely a calendar. It is the living breath of the cosmos — five limbs through which Mother Nature speaks to those with the awareness to listen. The rishis gave us this gift not as a rule-book of dos and don'ts, but as a mirror of the universe's moment-to-moment consciousness — so that we may align our free will with the river of destiny rather than swimming endlessly against it.\\\*
"सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म।"
"All this is indeed Brahman."-Chandogya Upanishad III.14.1
And the Panchanga, in its deepest reading, is the daily unfolding of that Brahman — through fire, earth, water, wind, and sky — into the five sacred limbs of living time.
I hope I could do justice in writing. This is all because of the grace of my Guru, Bhagwati and Mahadev
It’s the basic interpretation of the idea of Panchanga.
There are certain more levels through which we can decode anything and everything from Panchanga. I hope you liked it.
Lots of blessings!!
Jay Maa, Mahadev!🙏🏻
