Coverage observations

Hi all just an update on my post 8 days a go asking about coverage I've been to the new estate a few times during the past few days and Smarty's partnership with Vodafone is really coming into its own. A lot of my new neighbours have really poor signal with the big 3. I've noticed when driving through the estate there are a lot of very fast transitions between 3 and Vodafone 4G masts. There are a couple of 3 5G masts not too far away but fairly low powered with a Vodafone 4G mast fairly close to the estate. Around the new property I'm getting solid 4G+ via the local Vodafone tower. Speeds aren't brilliant by any means but my Glinet XE3000 is stayed locked onto the Vodafone mast without any of our devices experiencing any lags loading webpages or any buffering even when watching different live streams at the same time so when the contract runs out with my current network the whole household is moving back to Smarty in a flash. My current provider only has half a bar at the new property not enough to make or receive regular calls but texts do go through after a while and of course they aren't interested in looking into improving coverage but want me to switch to home broadband which I'm not interested in. Smarty has 2 bars on an S22 so absolutely fine for watching content and no issues sending texts and 3/4 bars on a Glinet E5800 Mudi7 EU and Glinet XE3000.

I've noticed Smarty coverage is very sensitive when driving through town there are a lot of instant transitions between 4G, 4G+ and 5GNSA sometimes I can be on 5G for literally seconds before dropping back down to 4G but even with a 1 bar signal in certain deadspots the sim isn't unregistering from the network so whatever frequencies 3/Vodafone are using is doing the job as sensitivity is excellent. I am genuinely impressed to see how connectivity has improved since I've been away from Smarty for the past 15 months.

has coverage improved?

Hi all I was with Smarty for just over 5 years but sadly had to leave last year due to 3 having next to 0 coverage on the new build estate even though we aren't too far from urban areas. Can anyone let me know especially with Smarty now piggybacking off Vodafones network as well if coverage has significantly improved?

My issue is my current provider has full 5G here with a huge high powered mast half a mile away with plenty of localised masts in the area but both 3 and my current provider have next to no signal in another new build estate around 2 miles away but Vodafone have full 5G coverage in that location. We are planning to move in a few weeks so need internet at the new house. I'm not interested in fixed broadband as unrestricted 5G is way faster. My current provider's consumer 5G is locked to 150MBps so I'm not getting the full benefit of 5G especially with devices streaming at the same time.

Its just crazy the new area we are planning to move to has good elivation but there is a dip along the main road running next to the estate where the big 3 apart from Vodafone have next to 0 signal. Literally 200M either side of the dip I have full 5G again. Vodafone have had 5G in that area for several months now with no interest from the other 3 to improve signal anytime soon.

I've never had any issues with Smarty when I was with them and used to get consistent speeds from our old home between 300 to 800MBps using a ZTE MU5120.

If the coverage has improved I'm seriously considering switching back to Smarty once my current contract runs out which isn't for a while yet.

Mudi7 interface failover observations

Hi all I've noticed that the Mudi7 took a while switching over to the next active connection for example when getting out of range of the connected WIFI network. Since installing the latest firmware I've noticed my EE sim shows as active as soon as the repeater drops out the repeater being my home WIFI.

Usually I use a mix of Openvpn TCP and UDP profiles with a couple of Wireguard configs but most of the time I use TCP as some free WIFI networks tend to block UDP or have connection issues after authenticating through a captive portal.

I've found if using Openvpn TCP it takes roughly 1 minute for Openvpn to reconnect even though the next interface is active in my case its cellular. If using Openvpn UDP or a standard Wireguard profile the transition is instant. For example if using ping-t to ping any website only 1 packet is lost during the switch stage which is fantastic so in reality live streams don't buffer or drop out but if performing a ping-t with an Openvpn TCP profile you'll see a ton of dropped packets for close to a minute. For a while I assumed there was an issue with the Mudi7 firmware but I assume its how the TCP protocol works that causes the delayed reconnection.

My XE3000 has the same behaviour with the same profiles so 100% its better to use Openvpn UDP and WG profiles where possible and switch to TCP if using a restrictive network.

Hopefully this info helps others who use the Mudi7 full time on a wide range of networks.

Aweful phone signal around Leicester

Hi all just a mini rant why is the mobile signal so poor in Leicester for context I was with 3 for 5 years and had decent signal at home on the city/county boarder with solid 5G and getting speeds over 800MBps upstairs. I moved house a year a go around 4 miles a way in the county and 3's coverage was so poor I was struggling to make calls outdoors and indoors there was next to no signal. I switched to EE which has a solid 5G signal here but the other big 3 have exceptionally poor coverage in this area. Sometimes the builders damage the cables running to EE's mega mast around half a mile a way but they always repair the damage within 3 hours but there are a ton of smaller localised masts here so when the big beast goes down I still have decent 4G+ indoors. For context I'm talking about the areas around Beauchamp College.

both 3 and EE have next to no signal in parts of Highfields and EE has really spotty coverage on London Road once you pass the county/city border but EE has decent coverage in town now once you get close to the clock tower.

I've noticed both 3 and EE have a major dead spot near Spire hospital when you go down the dip on Gartree road for the life of me I don't understand why these companies don't put up a low powered mast. When you ring them up they want you to switch to their inflated broadband packages whereas all I want is a half decent usable phone signal.

The frustrating thing is both 3 and EE have solid 5G all along Glen Hills way but as soon as you start going into the estates the signal is patchy.

For a bit of context I've been to Hereford a few times and 3 have solid 4G coverage in town apart from the railway station and EE have full 5G in the sticks.

I'm going to be moving house in the next few weeks and lack of usable phone signal is a major issue so looks like I'll have to eventually switch to Vodafone. I'm not interested in home broadband as decent 4/5G is way more reliable. I know a few people with Vodafone who have decent 4/5G signal in most parts of the city and county but having said that even Vodafone have poor to moderate coverage here. Its such a major issue here that the home builder switched all their site teams to EE.

Surface Pro 9 Intel version choppy audio fix once and for all

Hi all I've had my SP9 Intel version for just 3 and a half years now and not had any issues apart from the well documented audio popping issues right from the start. Firmware updates over time have made gradual improvements and when running from an external battery using type-C there is no audio popping now. Its a major issue for me as I use a screen reader. The popping only occurs when running from the internal battery.

I've been tinkering in the registry to enable all the hidden power settings and I've found if you disable CPU idle states the audio popping completely disappears but you take a massive hit with battery life.

The audio popping is really bad on battery on Windows 11 25H2 but its a lot better on the latest Canary build but its still there.

I found a much simpler fix by accident yesterday go to control panel, power, click your active power plan which should be balanced in most cases, click change advanced settings and scroll down to PCI express, expand link state power management and select "off" on battery and on AC. Click okay and job done no more random audio pops on battery and battery life is still excellent.

To test the audio play a high quality live stream such as any of the BBC channels on Iplayer. Usually the pops would occur every few seconds but after disabling PCI express link state power management audio is rock solid and stable even when putting the SP9 under load such as when generating UUP iso images.

Naturally I'm running the latest SP9 driver package and firmware so everything is up to date on the software side.

Please comment if this works on other Surface models.

I should make it clear I have no idea what disabling the PCI express link state management setting does on other hardware especially if you are running an EGPU etc but for a basic setup this method works 100%.

Hope this helps others out there.

Flying to the UAE with a couple of 12V 6Ah LFP batteries a quick report

Hi all just thought I'd give a quick update regarding taking my usual ultra portable battery setup to the UAE. I travel with a couple of 12V 6Ah 76.8Wh LFP batteries with a couple of fused 12AWG Powerpole45 cilicone cables to wire both batteries in parallel with both Powerpoles connected upto a 6 way PP45 splitter box. By 2 Powerpoles I mean 2 positives and 2 negatives so the standard wiring convention as used by ham radio groups.

Flying out of Heathrow T4 they were asking each group of passengers checking in if anyone had any electrical battery powered items in their checked-in luggage including tablets, laptops and the most obvious one spare power banks and Bluetooth speakers.

Security was where things got interesting I told the staff I had a couple of LFP batteries which I wanted scanning separately which they were fine with so all my other stuff went through the CT scanners fine but my batteries got sent for screening which took around 10 minutes as there were a lot of other trays being sent for manual checks. The staff dealing with my batteries swabbed them then called the duty supervisor when they sore the LFP markings on the battery label he manually checked them then had a 2 min chat with me what I was powering with such batteries when I showed him my fused cables and the SlimQ DC charging hub he was more than satisfied and let me go on my way.

On the transit flight to Riyad there was no special announcement about not using power banks on board or using the sockets and USB ports to charge devices so every other person had their phone charging from the in flight seat screens or powering laptops from the seat sockets and of course using power banks. The crew didn't say anything to anyone and the only hint of the new march 2026 rules was the standard announcement of calling cabin crew if a device got stuck between the seats.

Transit via Riyad was fine again the new Smiths detection machine bleeped when my mini battery bag went through the CT scanner so they did a quick swab and asked about how the batteries power my SP9 and I was on my way all very quick and friendly.

Flying out of Dubai back to the UK via Riyad check-in staff didn't ask anyone about checked devices such as laptops and tablets being in cases but there were a ton of ultra bright flashy notice boards mentioning not packing any battery powered devices in checked luggage. At Dubai security my batteries went through fine no questions no manual scans. At Riyad they did another quick manual and visual checks of the labels and let me go. So in total, 4 flights with everyone using power banks and using the on board charging options with no specific announcements from the crew but they are cracking down hard especially at Heathrow anything between 100 and 160Wh needs an airline approved form or email to show security but it was telling how the general security staff didn't seemed to be clued up on the battery regs. Knowing the regs yourself gives you an advantage especially if the duty supervisor is called because those are the only people who seem to know the rules inside out.

Happy travels.

Mudi7 V4.10.0 beta firmware

Hi all I just noticed the Beta 4.10.0 firmware update on the firmware download page for the Mudi7. I'm currently on holiday in the UAE using an Esim which I don't want to get wiped during the process. Can anyone confirm if the update will delete an active Esim profile? I'll be back home in a few days so will upgrade over the weekend if there is a slight chance of my Esim profile being wiped.

Just to confirm the Mudi7 has been rock solid out here in Dubai on the beach its hit temps of 46 degrese C with extremely high humidyty at times but isn't missing a beat. I'm currently on E& (Etisalat) and out here the 5G infrastructure is outstanding I haven't hit a single 4G+ zone when travelling around so the Mudi7's always stayed locked onto 5G with no problems at all. I'm using the EU version from an early bird batch just for context.

Thanks all.

Airalo working fine in UAE

Hi all I asked on this sub a couple of weeks a go if Airalo works in the UAE I decided to order a 10 day unlimited Airalo Esim a few days a go and it connected to E& 5G as soon as I enabled the profile literally right after we touched down and were still on the main runway. There is no lag and buffering and its handling 3 devices pulling data at the same time through a Glinet Mudi 7.

I am using a VPN and none of my profiles are blocked so nothing is blocked or restricted.

Hope this gives you guys a better idea of real world usage.

Emisar DA1K 21700 positive terminal battery dimple

Hi all sorry I know this has been asked a million times I recently noticed when moving an Ampsplus 21700 6000MAh genuine cell into my Fireflies E12 Eclipse there is a dimple in the positive terminal the dimple is the opposite of a button top so goes slightly down into the cell. I used my E12 last night for around half an hour ceiling bouncing in the living room the battery is behaving completely normally with no sudden hotspots or swelling at the negative terminal. The dimple isn't getting any worse but obviously I want to be 100% safe or as safe as I can be can any of you knowledgeable people confirm if my battery is still safe to use? sorry I haven't sussed out how to add images yet the Reddit interface is a bit clunky to navigate with a screen reader.

The cell is around 8 months old and has only had speraddic use. I fully charged it this morning under supervision in the E12 Eclipse with the cell tube remaining cool to the touch. I've had my DA1k dent cells over time I haven't dropped the light or knocked it on the head and my DT8K also does this over time as well but both my E04 Surge and E12 Eclipse haven't dented any of my 21700s as of yet even though I've accidently knocked the E04 Surge off the coffee table a couple of times roughly a 1M drop give or take a bit over the past few months.

Sorry forgot to mention if I use a flat top 18650 with a 18650 to 21700 adapter inserted at the positive end of the DT8K and DA1K it never dents the round contact point on the adapter which has a thick spring that makes contact with the battery positive. The contact point is very firm so next to impossible to dent.

(Edited for a bit more context)

Thanks all.

UAE esim supporting browser management

Hi all just looking for peoples experiences I've got a short holiday to the UAE coming up in a couple of weeks so want to buy an Esim for my Glinet Mudi7 for the UAE but ideally looking for providers that offer Esim management through a browser rather than a phone app. Just looking to view data usage and top up options if required. I have a VPN on my Mudi7 but I know UAE access will be very hit and miss.

Thanks all.

Coverage in UAE and Windows browser Esim management

Hi all I'm going on a short holiday to the UAE in August can anyone confirm if I'm able to view my data usage through the Airalo account on a Windows device? I'll be using my Glinet Mudi7's internal Esim to give me internet access. I don't want to faf about managing data topups through the app I'd rather do everything through a browser.

If I end up going with Airalo I've learned the lesson the hard way so I'll install the Esim via QR code over home WIFI Glinet devices allow QR code upload and I'll switch to the Esim as soon as I land. A few months a go I flew to India but didn't realise I had to switch the Esim on after landing so I had a full signal to a local network for an hour using another Esim provider before I disconnected and reconnected to the network and it was trouble free after that but very stressful. I enabled the Esim mid flight and assumed it would autoconnect like a physical sim after landing so lesson learned.

The Mudi7 will be sharing the connection to 3 devices.

Thanks all.

Victron products Victron Connect bluetooth access on Windows

Hi all I bought the Victron 75/15 MPPT solar controller nearly 2 weeks a go and absolutely love it. Its performing really well with the Renogy 400W solar blanket laid flat on the drive I know its not optimum but its working much better than another MPPT controller especially in cloudy dull conditions charging a 12V 150Ah 4S LFP battery using the Smart Lithium profile. It took me a few days and reading Victron documentation to work out how to change the default charge profile. Before it would charge at max rate and hard cut at 14.6V when the BMS would cut power but now it ramps down gradually when the battery is approaching full charge. I love the fact that I can adjust the current to 6A to charge a 12V 12Ah LFP battery at 0.5C.

VOC on the panel is 39.2V but more like 37.5V during the hot conditions. When the controller is maxed out PV voltage fluctuates between 33/36V.

The controller was easy to wire up using 12AWG cilicone to PP45 fused cables so no issues there. Technically I should have gone with the 100/20 or 100/30 controller but the tiny size of the 75/15 makes it so easy to move between locations.

I've just got a quick question I know Bluetooth doesn't work on Windows devices through Victron connect but I recently installed the latest beta on a laptop and Surface Pro 9 and to my surprise it picked up the Victron smart Bluetooth dongle and lets me view and change all the settings through Victron connect with no issues. The BT signal is really strong I can connect to the Bluesolar 75/15 in most rooms of the house and the dongle is laying flat on the ground.

I've also got the Victron 12/250W Phoenix 12V inverter which is totally RF quiet and it also worked fine with the dongle hooked up to the VE.direct port. Can anyone let me know if Smartsolar products and other Victron products such as DC to DC chargers and mains battery chargers will now work on Windows devices without having to use the VE.direct to USB cable? If other Victron products are going to work over Bluetooth on Windows I want to buy into the Victron line as their stuff is top notch and very RF quiet which is critical for me.

Thank you all.

Charging 4S LFP batteries with Victron Bluesolar 75/15 and USB C 20/28V

Hi all I'll try to keep this as short as possible I bought a brand new Victron Bluesolar 75/15 MPPT solar controller around 10 days a go and absolutely love the customisation it offers. The current Victron connect beta lets Windows devices access device data over Bluetooth so you no longer need to keep the VE.direct to USB cable with you. I've got the VE.direct dongle which works fine over Windows.

Long story short the controller works amazingly well with a Renogy 400W solar blanket keeping my 12V 150Ah LFP battery topped up. The blanket has a VOC of 39.2V but more like 37V in the hot weather and around mid day the solar voltage sits around 34 to 36V depending on conditions. I know my panel can push more but this ultra compact controller is perfect to move about between locations and hardly takes up any weight and space. Wiring up the unit was hard work I tried inserting tinned 12AWG cable but I didn't feel comfortable using those cables perminantly so I ended up ordering 3 fused 12AWG Powerpole45 to F2 cables on Amazon and snipping off the F2 connectors and jamming the wires into the 6 terminals for battery, PV and load with no issues so with the lower powered Victron stuff cilicone cables are the way to go.

I've got an upcoming holiday with the family next month for a few days so I'll take my 2 6Ah 4S 76.8Wh batteries with me they don't get flagged up through airport security as they are under the 100Wh limits most security checkpoints seem to be enforcing now. I just wire them in parallel once I'm through security using a couple of fused PP45 to F2 insulated cilicone cables. Instead of taking my Powerwerx variable power supply with the Powerwerx 8A DC to DC charger I thought why not use the Bluesolar 75/15? so I tried hooking up the unit to a 19.5V 120W laptop supply with a 5.5 x 2.5mm jack > female cig socket > male cig plug to PP45 cable 14AWG to the PP45 solar input and it worked perfectly fine. I used Victron Connect over Windows Bluetooth to back the current down to 4A and it was charging happily at 58W with the voltage holding solid at 19.4V. I then tried using a type C 140W 28V trigger cable with no issues so now I've got a super compact way of keeping my LFP batteries charged up on the go. Once you back the current down through Victron Connect the supply will stick to the amp limit you've set so there is no risk of blowing anything. I don't think there are many MPPT controllers that let you set battery current so I'm super happy. I don't leave the cig plug to PP45 cable lieing about so know one can hook it up to the batteries by mistake.

(edited for spelling and I should make it clear the 19.4V was the input from the 19.5V laptop supply battery profile was Victron Smart LiFePO4 with bulk/absorbtion set to 14.2V, and float to 13.5V.

Unable to create Goodcloud account

Hi all I'm struggling to create a Goodcloud account for support to look at my Mudi7 which is behaving itself for the most part. I suspect its something to do with the password requirements I've tried a ton of passwords which meet the requirements but its just not registering my email address. I've disabled my Proton VPN configs so connection is direct over EE UK through the BT network.

I'm trying directly through my Mudi7. Goodcloud service is enabled but just not able to get pass the password stage during account creation.

Anyone got some tips or know whats going on? I've been looking on the Glinet forums and found a few issues in the past related to the "?" symbol which I've not included in my attempt of a suitable password but just not having any luck.

Thanks all.

Mudi7 firmware 4.8.5 serious WIFI repeater and cellular bug and device crash

I've posted this in the Mudi7 carrier issues megathread as well so people can have a go at replicating this crash if they are brave enough.

I've just found a major bug in the latest 4.8.5 firmware basically when connected to cellular and connecting to a hotspot with captive portal and using it for at least 5 minutes when getting out of range of the hotspot and switching back to cellular, the Mudi7 will only connect to 4G and will completely lock up. Even local pings to the device fail and the screen power button doesn't respond the only way to get out of this loop is to physically pull out the battery or to hold the button down for around 20 seconds then it will boot up normally.

I've had this happen to 2 hotspots which require captive portal access so it is possible to replicate.

I'll be emailing Glinet support late evening tomorrow so they can have a look Monday morning their time.

  1. connect to a cellular network.

  2. Connect to a hotspot which requires a captive portal for internet access such as at a leisure centre or hotel etc.

  3. Browse the internet for several minutes through the hotspot once authenticated and disable cellular. Leaving cellular enabled also causes this bug.

  4. take the Mudi7 out of range of the hotspot and try reconnecting back to cellular.

  5. You'll see the wifi network to the Mudi7 drop then reconnect which is normal then the screen will completely lock up you can't power it on. Windows will give the Mudi7 a local private IP starting with 169. Disabling and reenabling Windows wifi or running ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew has no affect.

  6. Physically hold down the power button for around 20 seconds and then give it a quick press to restart the Mudi7.

  7. After a minute the Mudi7 will reconnect to cellular with the repeater disabled.

Also, the data usage values go out of the roof cellular now shows data usage to be over 110GB before this bug occurs usage was 18.5GB. My sim's dashboard shows normal data usage so no sudden crazy spike.

I'd love to know if anyone else can confirm this behaviour.

Mudi7 EU weird behaviour in car

Hi all has anyone else noticed after upgrading to 4.8.4 the Mudi7 can be really unstable when travelling on the road? for the past couple of days I've had 0 issues with 4/5G transitions but today half a mile up the road the Mudi7 suddenly switched to 4G and no connectivity then it kept on cycling between 4G+ and 5G and got stuck on connecting. Even a reboot didn't fix it so I switched network type to 4G and connection was established in 10 seconds on EE UK. I've just reset the firmware and on the same journey home it stayed locked onto 5G so I'll keep a close eye on this over the next few days. I've had weird behaviour like this before on my XE3000 but with not being able to send SMS after a major firmware upgrade only a full reset solved the issues. Its currently showing I'm locked to band 1 5G NR. Sometimes it changes to band 6 then back to band 1 but there is no noticeable loss of speed when it hops to another mast. Really interested to here from UK/EU owners. My XE3000 also behaves in the same way at home in the same location mainly sticks to 5GNR band1 but will sometimes hop to band6. I'm beginning to know EE's local coverage zones off the top of my head now. I never thought to reset the firmware after upgrading on Friday so lets see how things behave. At home in a fixed location it is rock solid but I need it to stay solid when on the move.

EasyJet flight diverts to Rome over power bank in luggage

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg7p3pdl8m7o

How come people don't know the rules? it will probably take the general public 10 years to get used to the rules before they probably change in a few months I remember when the 100Ml liquids rule came in it was utter chaos for a while through security because people didn't know what to do. You can't leave a power bank in checked luggage at least in this case there wasn't a fire and the passanger informed staff so the pilot diverted the aircraft. Check-in staff ask several times if your luggage contains loose batteries or power banks.

Mudi 7 TS9 male to SMA female adapters

Hi all I just ordered these adapters yesterday they don't fit the TS9 sockets in the Mudi 7 the adapters have 4 small roundish grooves on the tip and the Mudi 7 has 3 grooves internally so the adapters don't fit.

I have these adapters.

tinshow 2 Pack TS9 to SMA Adapter - TS9 Male to SMA Female Coaxial Connector - Gold-Plated - Compatible with High-Gain LTE Antennas, 5G Routers

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D1VP8ZJJ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Please could someone recommend some adapters that fit the TS9 sockets?

I've never worked with TS9 before so no idea if there are variants such as SMA and RP-SMA with these connectors.

Thanks all.

Hi all I'm absolutely loving the Mudi7 but I've got an odd issue when transitioning between 4/5G in a few places at home or when in the car.

I'm right on the border of 4/5G coverage so phones handle the transition absolutely fine briefly the connection can drop down to 4G or 4G+ then back to 5G for hours at a time. My XE3000 99% of the time holds onto 5G with 0 issues and even when taking it in the car the transition is seamless but when the Mudi7 loses 5G it switches to 4G then says the sim isn't registered. Sometimes a reboot fixes the issue but other times it takes a few reboots to get it to connect. For example I could be connected to a stream fine and when it switches to 4G everything drops out instantly. When 5G returns sometimes everything reconnects.

This evening I switched to 4G only and the connection is fine I haven't tried it in car yet only at home. I've got a 5G unlimited data sim I confirmed with EE UK over the phone the sim will work in any internet enabled device with no restrictions. I've set TTL to 65 and HL to 64 and MTU is 1500.

I haven't touched any other settings.

Has anyone else seen any similar behaviour? its just really frustrating. I didn't take it on the train yesterday because I was worried about having no connection for large parts of the journey so ended up taking the XE3000 which worked like a champ but obviously I want to take the Mudi7 with me in future.

Thanks all.
