What is growing in my snake plant?

I’ve had this snake plant for years and it’s been thriving. It even bloomed for the first time a few months ago! Last week I noticed some fuzz on the soil but was in denial that it was anything, but today I noticed it’s definitely moldy annnnd there are two spots of this weird bright green/yellow growth?! I don’t know what to make of it. What should I do? Should I scrape off the mold and the growths and just let it dry out really well? Or do I need to do something more? Thank you!

How to respond to faculty recruitment email from search committee chair at other university

I received an email from the chair of a search committee at another university encouraging me to apply for a faculty position that they are hiring for. I'm not interested for a few reasons that have nothing to do with that university or the position (even though I'm not happy at my current institution, I need to stay at least for another year, for various reasons). I want to reply to the chair, thank them for reaching out, and let them know that I won't be applying for the position but I want to communicate, without oversharing, that it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with me. I want them to consider me for future opportunities (which I will say) but any advice on what I should say in the email and/or how to word it? Thank you!

Dress code for Il Fornaio in Carmel

My partner and I are doing a roadtrip from Seattle to LA in a couple of weeks and we're primarily doing hiking/outdoorsy stuff so we aren't planning to pack a lot of "nice" clothes. We're going to be staying in Carmel for one night and I was looking at restaurants and wondered what the dress code is for Il Fornaio? Would we be ok in jeans/khakis and sneakers? Or would that be inappropriate? Thank you!

Filing NCE for K01

Hi everyone! My K01 ends on 11/30/26 and I plan to file a No-Cost Extension. I know I can't file until September 1st (90 days before the end date) and the button in eRA Commons won't even appear until then but I know things are moving extremely slow at the NIH these days so I want to have all of my documents ready before September 1st so that I can submit the NCE immediately.

However, I'm not exactly sure what documents I'm going to need to submit. I found some instructions and it looks like I'll need to upload a "Progress Report", a "Budget Document", and a "Justification Document" but I can't find any information on what exactly these documents should cover/include.

Could any provide more guidance and information on what I need to have prepared? I'd like to get started on them now so that I can submit ASAP!

Additional details: there's nothing in my NoA about NCEs, Commons does show that the award is SNAP eligible, and I've already spoken to my grants admin about this and she's the one who suggested I get the forms ready by 9/1 but she didn't tell me exactly what I need to say/cover in those documents. I'm the first person in my department to receive a K award so I'm not sure she knows.

Thank you!

Inherited old accordion

I inherited this accordion from my mom. She said it was custom made for one of my distant relatives a long time ago. That’s the Battista-Rossi name. But that’s all we know about it (other than it was obviously made by A. Butti & Co. in NYC). Does anyone have any idea of how old it is or anything else about A. Butti & Co.? I don’t play but plan on keeping it as a family heirloom just because it’s custom and so beautiful!

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Considering moving to area and wondering about business opportunities

Hello! My partner and I are considering moving to 29 Palms or Joshua Tree in about a year. We have been regular visitors for the past four years, coming once or twice a year both in the winter and summer, so we feel like we know what to expect in terms of weather and local amenities. But now we're starting to think about jobs so I had two questions for folks:

  1. My partner currently owns his own painting and finishing company, where he does interior and exterior painting and finishing (like staining decks and fences) for both residential and commercial properties. Is there a decent need for this type of contractor in the area?

  2. I have a remote job currently but I would much rather quit that and open a local business instead. I have experience in the restaurant industry and, because of my Midwestern roots, I have always dreamed of opening a walk-up frozen custard/ice cream stand someday. I know there's Coyote Cone in Morongo Valley but, to my knowledge, there's no other ice cream places in the area. So I guess I have a couple questions related to this:

  • Would a walk-up frozen custard or ice cream shop in 29 Palms or Joshua Tree do relatively well?
  • Are there other restaurants or restaurant-adjacent businesses that you think there's a need for in those areas?

Thank you in advance!!
