How to split the bill?

Hello ladies,

Planning to be abroad for a bit and eating out in Europe costs considerably more than eating out in India.

Back home, paying the entire bill once in a while when on a date or out with friends was not a huge financial setback.

The same can't be said for europe.

I'm new here, and I'm really nervous about eating out with new friends because how do you deal with the bill?

Do you offer to split it from the get go, or would that look cheap?

Does one person have to pay?

Should I pay my share in cash, or should I let them pay?

I need advice...

I get really nervous in India in these situations and just end up paying the whole bill to avoid any unpleasantness.

Help me.

Best face mask that actually STAYS on the nose?

Guys

I want to buy face masks (like the ones from COVID), specifically cotton ones, but the ones available online are not great.

Most cotton masks don't really hug the contours of the nose and so air enters from the gaps between the mask and the cheeks.

I'm looking for a cotton face mask that has a nose clip, the one from Jockey is really good. My issue with Jockey is

  1. The outer layer is polyester

  2. It's only available in two colours

Does anyone know of any good quality cotton face masks that come with a nose clip?

Reddit is censoring anti-caste/feminist/intersectional posts

This is just an observation but I've noticed in the recent past that any comment or post I make on casteism or the intersection of casteism and feminism in India gets auto deleted by reddit.

Even on this sub, a post of mine on a former relationship and it's interactions with caste was auto deleted.

The tldr of that post was that my ex probably rebounded back to me because of family pressure to get married (married within his caste) and I happened to fit the criteria.

I don't think there's anything particularly incendiary about this. Certainly nothing that needs to be deleted.

In another sub, I shared a link to an article by the buffalo intellectual. Poof. Auto deleted by reddit.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Can someone explain what is happening and why?

How exactly does Auto delete work on reddit?

Songs that help with vocabulary

Hi all,

I've been learning French for a while and what drew me to the language initially was the music.

A couple French artists single handedly managed to make me want to learn French, and I've found some songs that have helped me with specific aspects of speech.

I thought I'd share a few songs that have relatively simple and memorable lyrics + melody, and the concepts they helped me with.

1. Elizabeth - Amélie les crayons

https://youtu.be/zdgbNLlLZaQ?si=O6o\_k7Phbce7q2at

This song helped me tell the time, simply put. The song is about Elizabeth, and her struggled attempt at getting ready for work. The song helped me learn the names of different kinds of clothing as well. This song also touches on a small variety of emotions as Elizabeth gets late for work.

Overall, I think this song has a lot of phrases that are useful in spoken French.

2. Allez donc vous faire bronzer - Sacha Distel

https://youtu.be/1Du-lJRtE84?si=KBWAg\_cvFaghVIfC

This lovely vacation song uses both passé composé and imparfait and has a narrative style to it. It also has a few idioms or idiomatic phrases sprinkled in. Generally, I think it's a pretty good song in terms of usable vocab and as an aid in learning how to narrate.

3. J'ai pas envie - Mika

https://youtu.be/T0mY7bjqsdA?si=TmGwFO6wK5X8Hl7B

This is a really sweet and upbeat song about a couple that are at odds. This song uses a lot of past tense, almost entirely actually, and you encounter a bunch of cultural (French) references, which was quite fun. This song also helped me with the gender of a bunch of nouns.

Anyway I thought I'd put this out there in case it helps anyone!

Feel free to add French songs that you like in the comments, and what aspects of the language they helped you with!

No idea what show this is, but I want this top so bad.

Hi guys, I'm not much of a tv watcher. I saw this on a youtube short and scrolled past it, only to go back and take a screenshot because I loved this top.

Does anyone know where I can get this? Please let it be budget friendly and available 🙏🏽🕊️😭

The colours and fabric remind me of some of Desigual's stuff from 15 years ago.

Help me find this turtle neck sweater / the brand

Hi all, I bought a bottle green turtle neck sweater from an export surplus shop and they do this thing where they destroy the original brand label/tag.

I try to buy clothes made of organic fibres mainly because I don't want to inhale synthetic fibres.

The shop tag says "Hbone trtle LTE" and "J jill" but the original brand label has been torn up.

I've attached pics of both the label and the sweater

Thanks in advance!!

How to not fall sick in the winter?

Hi all, will be moving to Northern Europe shortly, just before winter begins.

I've never spent extended periods of time in cold climate (I'm from the western ghats) and I tend to catch a cold/develop a sore throat easily.

What sucks is this usually evolves into a fever, which can knock me out for days.

Since I'll be living on my own, I can't afford to fall sick often. I'm not going to lie, I'm terrified of such cold winters.

For context, I visited Uttarakhand a couple years ago in January, and it was really difficult for me, and I didn't even have anything to do as I was on a holiday. I think the temperature hit around 10°C.

So far, I've stocked up on winter wear - thermals, woolen wear, and other layers.

My biggest problem isn't keeping myself warm, it's the cold air that causes me to fall sick. I have an allergic reaction to cold air called Urticaria.

I'm really looking for any advice on how to prepare for the impending winter in Northern Europe.

Please please please let me know how to get ready for this winter hell 😭

Researcher with No job for a year now

Hi guys,

Posting on behalf of a friend.

She's got a background in environmental science, and she's worked as a researcher before.

Idk what it is with the current job market, but it's been a year and she hasn't been able to get a job yet.

She's not picky. She's applied to pretty much everything under the social sciences umbrella that she's eligible for.

These employers are weird. There have been some that made her do 4 rounds of interview..... before saying "No, sorry, we found someone better".

Idk what their problem is?

I get that in many cases they already have a candidate in mind and are only interviewing others out of formality, but it can be very crushing for job seekers to have to go through this repeatedly.

She worked at a very well known organisation previously, before circumstances completely outside her control affected her role (pulling the plug on USAID, etc)

To add to this, her home situation is not good for her mental health. Her parents....the less said the better.

She needs to move out.

If anyone has any leads on how to get out of this rut, please share them!

I think I get why trying to change your parents seems futile.

My parents are by and large better than average, based on what I've seen and heard around me.

Liberal (not politically, only personally) no real pressure to pick one path over another, marriage is a suggestion not a demand, dating is fine, very concerned about my physical health etc etc

As far as material needs are concerned, I've never had cause to complain.

The issue is in the more fundamental things.

_____________________________________

I've been sexually harassed multiple times.

One of those times, I told my mom about it. She had a non-reaction. A professor made advances towards me, and when I finally told her, she just....grimaced?

Suffice to say, it wasn't what I expected. I expected rage and the desire to help me recover.

But this same woman says make sure you are safe, don't go out too late at night, take a friend with you wherever you go etc etc.

At 10:30 pm, I get a call asking me where I am and when I'll be back, if I happen to be out.

Her concern feels really misplaced, because she feels "protective" in situations where I'm pretty safe.

A few days ago, a male friend of mine did something to make me physically uncomfortable in front of my family. My mom really likes this friend.

So when I mentioned much later how I felt, she just shrugged and said "oh I didn't realise you were upset, you guys are so close".

Again, I was upset how little this bothered her. How bad does it have to be for her to be angry on my behalf?

And I'm tired of bringing it up. Things are relatively calm at home right now but if I bring this up, I'll be hit with the "why do you keep bringing up the past".

I bring up the past because it's repeating in the present.

Which is why, when she half heartedly asks me to confide in her when I share something of this nature with her, I just laugh internally.

Telling her is worse than not, because them I'm faced with her relative indifference.

A close family friend (close to them, not me) has been accused of harassing his students (it's not public knowledge). My parents hang out with this man.

Another time, when a friend and neighbour was sexually harassed by a flasher who also touched himself in front of her, I called the police.

My mom thought I overreacted because "back in my time, when something like this happened, we would just laugh it off".

I sat her down and looked her in the eye and said, "what if he had escalated and actually done something to her? Would you still be laughing?".

She said no.

But it struck me how indifferent her attitude towards sexual crimes/indecency was in general.

I don't know what to do or where to go with this, because it feels really cyclic.

Like she accepts that maybe she didn't react adequately in the moment, and then discards it from her memory only to repeat it.

DELF B1 Production écrite

Hi guys,

I've been trying to dig up sample papers to figure this out - Does the writing section in the new format have one question or two?

In some papers, I've found two questions, like a small essay plus a letter, and in others, a single question, say something like a 160 word email.

Could someone clarify what this section will consist of, and the general topics to brush up on?

Thanks!

Offering: English | Seeking: French

Hi all, I'm preparing for the DELF B1 and I'm looking for a conversation partner to talk to in French.

I'm slow but determined, and I really value feedback, as well as the chance to simply hear you speak French and improve my vocabulary.

I'm a native English speaker from India, and I am happy to configure our conversations such that you can make the most of them as well.

Likewise, I enjoy teaching and would love to give you useful and actionable feedback such that your English sounds natural and fluid.

The focus here is speaking, but I'm happy to explain the underlying concept whenever you need.

I'd also prefer to have a regular schedule, such that we can have at least one call a week.

Drop a message if you're interested!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

What's the crowd favorite work book/ exercise book for grammer and vocab at the A2-B1 level?

I'm looking to apply and practice concepts of grammer while also slowly improving my vocabulary on the side.

And I would need a book with answer keys.

Thanks

Details are:

My very close childhood friend, iskcon temple.

She's in her mid 20s, doing master's in homeopathy. Yes, I know it's a bogus degree.

She's been dating a Christian for two years, no one knows. They are still involved. She plans to keep seeing him because she's not "in love with the arranged guy yet"

Her parents started hunting for iskcon men for her, the first candidate is in his early 30s, IT guy living in Canada.

She has nothing in common with him, he's also asked her to loose weight so that they can "be healthy together and travel the world".

He's been pushing her to lose weight under the guise of concern for her health since they began talking.

She's planning to marry him and move to Canada. No money, no job. He's told her he doesn't expect any money from her. Her degree is invalid there.

She still has education loans to pay off from her master's and bachelor's.

Oh also, he broke up with his ex because of caste. He's not entirely over her.

Additionally, both of them apparently want "3 kids" and an active sx life. They have known each other for less than 6 months and never met.

I've tried to tell her a man is not a plan, she's the only child, she needs to be careful and not marry the first guy she's made to meet, but what are some other hard hitting facts I can bring to her notice to explain why this is not a good idea?

Her parents are not well off btw, and I think they hoped that her financial independence would lead to theirs in their retirement but honestly idk how she will have her own money if she takes this route.

Also, he earns about 4500 CAD a month.

And I'm not going to go over and beyond to convince her. I'm going to have this conversation and then drop it. I owe it to her as her friend to say this. What she does afterwards is up to her.

There's this wonderful duet featuring French singer Sacha Distel and American singer Dionne Warwick, and they sing two songs: The girl from Ipanema and Tristeza.

I looked up the lyrics to the original Tristeza, which I believe goes by the name A Felicidade, by Antônio Carlos Jobim, but the lyrics of the two don't match.

Is there some other version of this song that Dionne is singing in Portuguese?

(I've marked this as brazilian portuguese but I don't actually know if this is that, please correct me if I'm wrong)

I have sensitive teeth and I've discovered that pineapples hurt them. Especially when they're sour.

So lately, I've begun microwaving chunks of pineapple before eating them because somehow, the thing that makes my teeth hurt kinda disappears.

I microvave it, put it in the fridge for a bit and then enjoy my pineapple 🍍
