Proposal: Use more 360 Action Cams in your Freestyle-Videos!

I always thought this might make for some amazing footage, so I learned to fly decent enough to bring my idea to the test and as it turns out: With some work it's pretty freaking cool!

There are of course some caveats to this. You can run Insta360 Cams "naked" (or rather without a Battery at least) by just soldering an USB-C cable to your FC which brings them down to about 100g. Thats of course some noticeable weight and you can't really strip them any further, but also not unreasonable compared to other Action Cams and you can get a used Insta360 X2 like I used here for about the same price as an Action 2.

Don't get me wrong this will not be the setup where you try your craziest new lines, do you most risky tricks and explore the newest bando. But if you went to the same Bando for the third time this month: Why not challenge yourself in your go-to line with a little extra weight and get some crazy new shots in the process?

But to manage expectations: This is not an Avata 360 situation, "fly however take your shots afterwards". You got a bigass drone in your footage and some angles won't be very flattering or cool to watch. Worst case you got some pretty decent 200° FOV Footage in the front though and you can even track a chased car or bike if you stay behind it for example.

Regarding the Video: I've been training a lot, but I'm only doing FPV in general for about 3 months now and this is my third flight with a 5" so I know I suck, no need to point it out 😅

But thats why my proposal is: If you are some true Freestyle-Artist, why not challenge yourself? Sure you can be like the thousands of other Era 5" perfect weight distribution pilots doing the same crazy tower dives in your local bando as everyone else. Or you can really show off your skills, put on some extra weight and carve a new path of FPV-Content in the process 😁

I for once, would love to see what a REAL FPV-Pilot could do with the concept.

I finally understand the 5"-Hype, but they're serious business.

I'm still in a beginner so even after 100s of hours in the simulator, I wanted to start small, Freestyled my Neo2 then went to a Tinywhoop and then a Kayoumini and thought "hey that Video Quality is nice enough, I can theoretically do all the tricks, even race, why do I even need a 5-Inch?" after having a little excurse with the Avata 360 (which is sadly still not freestyleable, but still an amazing Explorer/LR-Option) I finally gave-in and treated myself to a Speedybee Mario 5....and boy did I immediately understand.

The core is, that this just doesn't feel like a toy anymore. Not at all. I learned her in the simulator for weeks but when I finally took her for a test-ride, it felt like going from playing NFS to steering a beefy Muscle Car for real. These things are no joke. That sound alone, they're legit intimidating, Roaring like untamed beasts having so much power that you feel like there isn't a situation in the world, that couldn't be solved by just pointing it in the right direction and pushing the Throttle (if you can tame it that is)

Having trained for many hours, I still had a lot of respect, but really did feel in control here and the high the comes from steering something so powerful is something no other drone I tried so far could come even close to.

That beeing said: If you're a beginner, please DON'T start with a 5-Inch. Start in a Simulator and please get your time in with a Tinywhoop at least first. They're absolute fun to fly outdoors but can do literally no harm when you encounter your first unavoidable little disasters. A 5-Inch can legit kill someone and should be treated with the matching respect.

Here's a fun little video of my first flight so you guys can criticise my flying ;-P

PS.: And yes I did crash (this damn leaf haha) but luckily she took it like it was nothing and me and my Spotter made sure no one was near for the riskier moments.

O4+ is absolutely insane!

Ok so if what the Avata 360 can do is demonstrating range- and penetration-wise what we can expect from an O4+ Air-Unit for Custom Drones in the future as well, then this might be the moment even Analog-Enthusiasts have to consider switching.

Literally the only thing keeping me from flying it in an 5-10km Radius around my position with several trees in the way and a clear image, is it's low top-speed and battery life. This thing eats forests and concrete for freaking breakfast.

In spaces where I'm down in single digits on my O4 Pro the Avata 360 doesn't even shrug. Yesterday I literally flew through a small valley surrounded by nothing but trees and a massive concrete bridge with a tiny metal tunnel and this thing went through like it was nothing and went on, like there wasn't the concrete equivalent of a 3-5 houses between us. Check it out yourself:

I'm still salty DJI just removed the freaking Manual Mode on the Avata360 cause damn would this baby soar with over 90 km/h and this signal-penetration, but still, if this is what the future looks like while still staying completely compatible with the current O4-Goggles like here, then it's a bright one.

It's so insane to me. I can fly my small little Neo2 in M-Mode no problem and not only did they not add M-Mode for the 360-Version which would've been easily possible, they now REMOVED the Single Lens M-Mode completly!

Whats the sense behind this design, if you can't even fly it in manual? Could've gone for foldable props then just as well. The Avata 360 is an absolute unit and me flying with almost 70 km/h and then stopping in an instant within a few meters shows me it could easily be used to Dive as long as you don't go completely bonkers with it and know how to handle it.

I'm so pissed right now. Of course this 360 footage is nice and i like all those stabilizers for certain tasks but only beeing able to have a stuttering slow decline from big heights everytime is absolutley BS and really ruins any nice footage you could do alongside tall towers, waterfalls and mountain-ranges. You can't even really follow a car that goes downhill. It should be an absolute no-brainer after the Neo2 had such an great success BECAUSE of it's versatility.

They could've made this the 360 Avata 2 easily. It has power for days and only thing needed would've been that DJI gets their Software-shit together. But what do they do instead? They remove a feature, that was already added and reviewed. Thinking very hard of sending mine back to be honest.

And before anyone answers "Yeah just build a 5 Inch bro", stop to think before you talk please. Cause you either have a way to automatically crop that whole freaking 5-Inch out of your footage, or your argument is about as nonsensical as DJIs whole Action here. Just a complete lack of vision for some reason.

Truly amazing, that you can really upload the full 8k footage to youtube and let people look around while you fly. Hope more people use this in the future especially for long range-flights I think they really open up a whole new way to watch someone lines.

It's a little wonky on the phone (your really have to hold it very still and more or less turn your entire body), but then it looks like you can move around a flying portal or something. On PC it's a little more "tame" and in VR it's the full immersion. Absolutely crazy feature.

Here is one I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpiCtx63EUg

Maybe people can share their favorite ones they found so far :-)

Tiny Planets are a fun gimmick, obviously not gonna hold a whole video on their own, but if it comes to them, I would argue, there isn't another Device out there currently that can produce them on the Level as the Avata 360 does.

There are some caveats to this drone for sure (where is my Manual-Mode update for heavens sake?), but it has Power, it can stand in even strong winds like a Tower and it has amazing Image Quality, on par with the best Standalone 360-Cams out there.

You have to take the time to cut your footage and I'm definitely in the process of truly getting used to it but it feels like the possibilities are really endless.

Here some footage of me playing around with it:
