Got a new chess set. All the spines are pretty uniform. What do y'all think? Did I get PC'd?

James Taylor - Fire and Rain

This song has been with me for a while now and every time the verse comes about his heroin addiction, I can't help but get choked up.

When he says "Won’t you look down upon me, Jesus? You’ve got to help me make a stand. You’ve just got to see me through another day. My body’s aching and my time is at hand. And I won’t make it any other way."

Reminds me of how short life is and how we can throw it all away. Going down my stairs, I have a small shelf hanging on the wall with memorial cards, trinkets that remind me of a person who is no longer here, printed photos together, etc. Half the people are there due to drugs and alcohol. I'm very thankful for what I have today. I have to remind myself of that daily.

Big changes in life and I'm not drinking. That's a big win. 5+ years no booze. I'm counting my wins.

Three Piece Altmans Peru

Very prominent areoles. The label was something like "cactus with fake flower" and I checked with Altmans but no one could verify where the seeds came from or any genetics.

There is a bit of sunburn that happened but nothing more than cosmetics. No mush or anything. Feels completely fine. They were moved outside too quickly last season.

$15 plus shipping via pirateship (I'm guessing $8-12 depending on where you live - west side will be cheaper).

These seem to grow pretty quickly compared to my other small guys.

Rae Lakes Loop via Baxter Pass

Wow, what an amazing trip!

I was lucky enough to catch and cook trout, roast wild onions and grub yummy raspberries.

DAY 1: Trailhead (should be called an "entrance" not a "trailhead" because half the time, there isn't really a trail. It got washed away and overgrown, but can be followed relatively easy with GPS) to campsite marked on Caltopo about halfway to Baxter Pass (late start day after traveling) - about 3 to 3.5 miles into the trail.

DAY 2: Trekked to Rae Lakes. Baxter Pass was awesome. I felt like it made me work for it. It took me a little longer than expected though. I want to say that I did the trail from camp to pass in 3hrs. So, I was averaging about a mile an hour including route finding. Rae Lakes was beautiful with the snow dusted sawtooth Sierras in the background. Mosquitoes were F'd up. I don't mess with deet, so a thin wind breaker that they couldnt stab through and a headnet was essential. Along the streams, you can find wild onions. I picked a few to grow at home.

DAY 3: Trekked to Junction Meadow and found a nice campsite about .2 mile before the bear box. Bugs here weren't as bad as Rae Lakes.

DAY 4: Trekked to the top left of Rae Lakes Loop where Arrowhead Creek and Woods Creek meet. We stopped and jumped off the bridge along the Paradise Valley Trail and swam for a bit. There were also wild berries to eat which was cool.

DAY 5: Trekked to trailhead but got stuck 1 mile from the car. I hit the last big creek crossing right as I lost all light and didn't want to cross at night. I slept under a tree in a sandy cave that was washed away near the roots. It was really cool actually. I woke up and finished the final mile to the car.

Overall, it wasn't the hardest trek I've done but it definitely challenged me and made me work for it. Lots of bugs/heat, plan accordingly.

Rock on y'all ;)

What piece of gear has lasted you the longest?

I'm reflecting on different pieces of gear I have and one pair of trekking poles has crushed soooo many hours of hard use with very minimal damage. They are practically new (structurally, just not cosmetically).

What gear has lasted you forever and it still works 100% as it did when you got it brand new (or used)?

My dad killed my baby

Overall I actually give him props. I was gone on vacation for a few weeks. He only killed two pot plants and a few cacti but one of them was my Hulk Balls with a bunch of segments. Oooooof that one kinda hurts. I'm trying to just tell myself that I need to find peace in life/death and it's ok, but I'm also like da fuq how do you do that? I expected more so I guess it could be worse.

Pour one out for a fallen homie, fellow tricho-headz

Math and Math Ed MS

I have a math ed MS and math BS. I applied to a whole lotta places but no luck; not even an interview. I applied mostly at community colleges around the country along with a few universities.

I am starting my MS Math this fall and I'm curious how much more competitive it will make me for a college/uni math instructor position.

Anyone familiar with the current state of higher ed math positions? I can't tell if I suck or there are just too many people applying.

I've done a decade of secondary Ed and now I need to make the transition.

Cheers

Chinooks in the Eugene area

Any fishermen out there getting hits from Chinooks? I fished the Armitage area all morning yesterday and today (I was drifting eggs with a 3oz weight until I was told that wasnt allowed in that stretch, so I switched to a simple 3/4oz spoon/spinner)

Nothing...

I worked a pretty long stretch on both sides, but I've never fished specifically for Chinook. I hope I'm doing it right. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos, but I haven't found any that are super specific for my needs.

I'd love steelhead if Chinooks aren't biting now.

What setup on your rig do you use for Chinook? So far I've tried spoons, jig with salmon eggs, spin n glo

Thanks y'all. I'm in from out of town for two weeks. Any help will increase the chance of me catching something sooner rather than later. Idk how many more times I can get my wife to watch the kids all morning while I'm out fishin'. Cheers

I got to hold 70s weed

Necklace was made in the 70s. Two pieces of glass with pot leaf smashed in the middle.

My brother-in-law got it from an old timer.

2026 Inyo/Rae Lakes - CalTopo

I'm trying to post to more local subreddits to see if anyone has been in this area anytime recently. Some of my trip will be on the JMT, which I'm really excited about.

I've read reports of less than average snowpacks. I'm curious about the creek crossings. I can see on the map where some will be and the one looks like it could be huge. Hopefully the large broken trees and stuff are still there to help cross (at least thats what it looks like on the satellite pic)

Thanks y'all! My trip is for the end of June.

What should I study?

I was just accepted into a MS Math program and I'm really excited. It's been 10+ years since getting my BS Math though.

I took an abstract algebra course (not grad level) last year so I'm fresh on that, but linear and analysis kind of scares me; analysis more than linear.

I talked to the department chair (I've known him for a long time) and said "should I study all summer? What should I work on?" And he was basically like dude just enjoy your summer and show up day 1 ready to get to work... You'll be good.

What do you think? Anyone have experience with this? What math topics should I focus on? Should I just show up day 1 lol? Should I just start on page 1 with the textbooks and see how far I can get? Not sure.

Done with dispo bud

I'm so sick of smoking bud that barely smells like anything and is dry as fuck. It tastes like shit and does not have the same experience.

I thought it was because I was buying bottom shelf (which still doesn't make sense because I used to buy mids back in the day that were fresher than what we get now), but no it's the top shelf where I live too. I got the guy to check harvest dates and find the freshest jar.... That too smelled like nothing and smoked like shit.

What is going on? Where did all the moisture and terps go? Where the fuck is the sticky icky where I live. It doesn't exist. Im growing my own this season, but I'm trying to find bomb before then.

I've been looking into online thca vendors but who knows, maybe their buds will be the same shit. I got one that was trash but also bottom. Now I ordered "AAAA Exotic" nugs to try. It better stink like weed. Idk why this is so hard for me to find. I need to figure out if any thca sites have fresh bomb ass dank ass.

100% of dispo bud I've had in the past year has sucked ass compared to basic buds I used to get in 2000s/2010s. All tasteless grass.

Mourning a massive loss

I need to just share shitty news with people that understand. I want to cry right now. Idk what happened but I just lost 3 of my prized cacti in the matter of 2 days.

One (mutant tbm banana kind of like Fred but not) got hit hard with rot when I had it in over winter. I tried everything but there was no saving it. Every graft failed (I checked this morning)

Then I noticed my Shulgin cut with this weird discoloring. It had pockets of black rot all throughout it. Wtf. Then I noticed the black oozing on my Hulk Balls graft.

I'm losing it right now. I know the circle of life and you have to enjoy it while you got em but jeez.... I'm so bummed out.

My attic got really hot lately. I'm thinking the issues are coming from that. I just cut a vent and I'm adding another exhaust.

Any clue where this black rot stuff is coming from? I had weird bug I found recently. I need to bomb the entire grow space.

OldSkool Brick Hash

I didn't realize the thca loophole stuff was real shit. I got 100g of this brick hash and it feels like straight OG hash you would have scored back in the day.

Not gonna lie, it probably won't be anything special if you're under 30 years old but for old times, I'd snag one or two of these before you can't anymore. I'm not working for any site or anything just giving a shout-out where it's due.

This is a "Premium THCa Hash Bar"

Smokes ok. Not gonna have the terp profile of badder or rosin but it's nice.

Consistency is more like wet/waxy sand rather than clay. Definitely a sift/press brick. This makes mixing it with green super super easy. No waxy chunks floating around.

Smell is bomb.

Taste on its own could use some work. I'm going to cure it longer in a glass jar to see if that helps it at all. A little harsh but not noticable when mixed with weed and/or tobacco.

I reuse old pots and I had this one for a long ass time. Based on the price, when do you think this was from? Home Depot TPM.
