I can remember coming home from school and watching Soupy on TV as a child. My friends also liked him as well. He had a huge following here in Detroit, and did a lot for the community.

Mannix: 1967 - 1975

One television show I loved as a child was Mannix, starring Mike Connors. This was a classic detective TV drama that was a favorite of my babysitter, who let me stay-up and watch it. She had a big crush on Connors.

Magic 8 Ball

I remember receiving one of these as a gift 🎁 from my aunt in 1975. I was thrilled to have one, and one of my friends asked me if it could give us answers to our math problems. So I gave it a try for a few days, and to say the 8 ball 🎱 was a disappointment, would be an understatement! 🤣

You Can’t Outrun a Motorola

Electronics pioneer Motorola donated their two-way radios to motion picture and television studios in Hollywood in the 1950s -1990s as a PR move to promote their products to public safety agencies and the public alike. First is from the 1960s police show “Dragnet” while the second is “Emergency” in the 1970s. How many’s have seen a Motorola product like this in a TV show?

High School Drivers Education

How many of us remember taking Driver’s Education class in high school? I can remember going out a receiving Learner’s Permit and then converting it into my first driver’s license 🪪. Ironically, in my junior year the high school I went to received a grant and purchased 18 simulators like ones shown in the photos.

Today, most, if not all of the high schools here in Michigan no longer offer driver’s education courses, you have to enroll in a nearby driver’s school and pay 💰 around $800+ in fees to obtain your learners permit. I about fell over, when my friend in Concord, NH told me it cost around $1,700.00 to have her son take lessons at a local driving academy, I just about fainted. Thank God for me and others my age it was free.

This 3x3 Rubik's Cube is a popular, 6-sided color-matching puzzle invented by Erno Rubik in 1974. I received one for Christmas in 1980 and it was a great way to spend a few hours on a rainy day trying solve it. In 1985 a friend mine from Yokohama was able to solve the puzzle in just under 90 seconds. As for myself, I could never solve it.

How many of us remember watching “Night Gallery” on NBC hosted by Rod Serling? Each episode featured supernatural and macabre tales, often with a moral or ironic twist, similar to his earlier hit The Twilight Zone but with a stronger focus on horror.

Here’s a blast from the past. I actually signed up and received this kit when I was in the second grade. My classmates thought it was the coolest thing ever.
