14F | Hair has become significantly thinner after stress and weight loss. Looking for similar experiences before my dermatology appointment.

I'm 14 years old and I'm posting because I'm feeling really overwhelmed and would appreciate hearing from anyone who's had a similar experience.

I've always had naturally very thick hair, and it has gradually become much thinner over the past several months. The change became noticeable around November 2025, and since then my ponytail has become significantly less full. My hair now feels much finer and more brittle from the roots to the ends.

Some background that may be relevant:

  • I went through a prolonged period of significant stress.
  • During that time, I unintentionally lost around 2–3 kg in about a month because I wasn't eating enough.
  • My menstrual cycles are normal.
  • I'm not taking any medications.
  • I don't have excessive shedding now (I estimate around 20 hairs a day), and I don't notice large amounts of hair coming out when I brush or wash it.
  • My scalp doesn't appear dramatically more visible, although I occasionally notice slight visibility around the sides.
  • I have noticed some short baby hairs growing.

I'm not looking for a diagnosis, as I already have an appointment with a dermatologist next Tuesday. I understand that hair loss can have many different causes and that only a healthcare professional can properly evaluate it.

I'm mainly hoping to hear from others who experienced hair thinning after a period of stress and/or weight loss.

  • Did your hair eventually regain its previous density?
  • How long did recovery take?
  • Was there anything you wish you had known while waiting for your dermatology appointment?

This has been affecting me emotionally more than I'd like to admit. My hair has always been something I loved about myself, so seeing such a noticeable change has been really difficult.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read or share their experience. I really appreciate it.

14F - My hair has become so much thinner over the past year and I'm honestly freaking out. Any advice?

Hey guys. I'm 14F and I'm genuinely at my breaking point over my hair. 😭

I've had naturally super thick hair my entire life. It was literally the one feature I was always confident about, and I always got compliments on how thick it was.

Around November 2025, I started noticing that my ponytail felt way thinner than it used to. At first I thought I was imagining it, but over the months it just kept feeling less full. Now my hair feels fine, brittle, and so much thinner from the roots to the ends.

Some background:

  • I went through a really stressful period.
  • I lost about 2–3 kg in one month because I wasn't eating enough from stress.
  • I'm not on any medications.
  • My periods are normal.
  • I don't think my scalp is way more visible, but sometimes I can slightly see it near the sides.
  • I only lose around 20 hairs a day, so I don't think I'm shedding a crazy amount anymore.
  • I actually have baby hairs growing, which gives me a little hope.

The weird thing is that I'm not losing handfuls of hair, but my hair just feels... half of what it used to be. My ponytail is SO much thinner, and every time I touch my hair it feels fine instead of thick.

I've tried DIY stuff like egg masks, but obviously they haven't magically fixed anything.

I'm seeing a dermatologist this Tuesday, but I've honestly been crying over this for a week because my hair was the one thing that made me feel pretty, and I'm terrified it won't ever go back to how it was.

Has anyone gone through something similar after stress or weight loss? Did your hair eventually get thick again? How long did it take? And is there anything you wish you'd done sooner?

Please be honest, but also please don't scare me more than I already am. 😭💛

hair loss will be the death of me😭

welp this might be a long one😭GNG MEIN PURAY WEEK ROTI RHI HU CUZ I JUST CANT RECOGNIZE THE ONCE BEAUTIFUL HAIR I HAD IN MY BACHPAN😣😣

Y'all I'm actually gonna lose my mind.

I've had THICKKKK hair literally since I was a kid. Like everyone used to comment on it and it was smth I was genuinely confident about. 😭

Fast forward to around Nov 2025 and I started noticing my ponytail felt... off?? Like way thinner than before. At first I was like "nah I'm tripping" but it's just gotten worse since then.

Now my hair feels so fine, brittle and dead from the roots all the way to the ends. 😭 My ponytail is skinny af compared to what it used to be and every time I touch my hair I'm just like... yeh kya ho gaya bhai.

Here's the lore

Went through a REALLY stressful time.

Lost around 2–3 kg in a month because I literally wasn't eating properly from stress.

I don't take any meds.

Periods are normal.

I don't think my scalp is noticeably more visible except maybe a tiny bit near the sides if I really look.

I only lose around 20 hairs a day so I'm not shedding handfuls or anything.

I DO have baby hairs growing which is the only thing stopping me from fully tweaking.

That's what's confusing me.

If I was losing like 200 hairs a day I'd understand, BUT I'M NOT?? My hair has just become soooo much thinner and less dense. Like where did all the volume disappear to?? 😭

I've tried random DIY stuff (egg masks etc.) but let's be real... they did absolutely nothing lmao. And I've tried oils too from time to time

I'm seeing a dermatologist this Tuesday but ngl I've been crying for like a week over this. It sounds dramatic but my hair was genuinely the feature I loved most about myself and now I feel ugly every time I look in the mirror. Allah kasam I'm so scared it won't ever go back.

Has ANYONE gone through this after stress or weight loss?? Did your hair eventually get thick again?? How long did it take?? What actually helped??

Please don't sugarcoat it but also pls don't make me spiral either. 😭🤍
