Germany Unveils First Quadriga Tranche 4 Eurofighter with Advanced Radar Jets to Replace Tornado and Serve Till 2060s

Airbus has unveiled Germany’s first new Tranche 4 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet under Project Quadriga at its factory in Manching.

The €5.4 billion deal includes 38 new jets (30 single-seat and 8 two-seat versions). These aircraft will replace Germany’s oldest Eurofighters and are scheduled for delivery from 2025 to 2030.

Main Improvements

  • Better Radar: The jet features a powerful new AESA radar (called ECRS Mk1). It can detect enemy aircraft, drones, and missiles more effectively even small or hard-to-see threats and is harder to jam.
  • Modern Cockpit: It includes a large, easy-to-read 12x22-inch display screen and upgraded computers for better control and awareness during missions.

The new Tranche 4 jets are multi-role fighters. They will also support electronic warfare roles to help replace Germany’s aging Tornado aircraft. Germany has already ordered 20 additional Tranche 5 Eurofighters for delivery in the early 2030s. The first Quadriga jet is expected to make its maiden flight soon, with the entire fleet planned to remain in service until the 2060s.

Royal Air Force has deployed the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System on anti-drone operations in the Middle East, fitted to Typhoon fighter jets, after moving from testing to operational deployment in under two months.

Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System, known as APKWS, uses laser guidance to turn unguided rockets into precision weapons capable of engaging drones and other threats at a fraction of the cost of conventional missiles.

Rapid procurement and testing work by the MoD alongside industry partners BAE Systems and QinetiQ enabled the system to reach operational service within months of development beginning.

successful test strike against a ground-based target took place in March, followed by successful air-to-air firing conducted by RAF Typhoon pilots from 41 Test and Evaluation Squadron in April

Defence experts have estimated APKWS rockets used by other countries cost around $30,000 (£22,377) each. The system is already used by the US military.

This is closer to the price of the Shahed 136 long-range drone, which is estimated to cost between $20,000 to $50,000.

South Korea will retire its veteran American F-5 Tiger II fighters by the end of 2027

South Korea plans to retire its aging F-5 Tiger II fighter fleet by the end of 2027, moving up the original 2030 timeline to accelerate the transition to the domestically developed KF-21 Boramae fighter.

Key details of this transition include:

Accelerated Retirement: Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Son Seok-rak announced on May 13, 2026, that the F-5s will be phased out by the end of 2027 rather than 2030.

Replacement Strategy: The 4.5-generation KF-21 Boramae, which received final combat suitability approval in May 2026, will replace the retiring F-5s, with deliveries expected to begin in September 2026

The ROKAF intends to have approximately 120 KF-21 jets deployed by 2032 as part of a move toward modernizing its air combat capabilities
