4,000 Miles an R1S and a Trailer
This summer, our family set out on an unforgettable road trip to deliver our son to the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Traveling in our Rivian R1S while towing our Intech Sol Horizon trailer, we covered nearly 4,000 miles through nine states.
Our route to Colorado took us east from Seattle through Coeur d’Alene Idaho and Missoula Montana to Gardiner, where we spent an evening exploring the northern loop of Yellowstone National Park. From there we continued through Idaho to Logan, Utah, crossed central Utah to Grand Junction, Colorado, and then made the spectacular drive across the Rockies to Golden—including a trip through the Eisenhower Tunnel.
After arriving in Golden and getting our son settled at Mines, we made another memorable mountain drive to the summit of Mount Blue Sky, one of the highest paved roads in North America.
Our trip home took us back across Utah and Nevada. Along the way we stopped at the Great Salt Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats, continued through Reno and Modoc National Forest in northeastern California, and reached Klamath Falls, Oregon. There we added one final major adventure: visiting Crater Lake National Park and driving the Rim Road around the lake.
From high Rocky Mountain passes and Yellowstone wildlife to Utah salt flats, Nevada deserts and the deep blue of Crater Lake, the trip became much more than simply taking our son to college. It was a nearly 4,000-mile family adventure—and a pretty remarkable demonstration of what it is possible to do with an electric vehicle towing a travel trailer.
