Keeping Clemtine indoors for winter

I started this little dude from a Clementine seed in February. It's a very slow grower. I don't have high hopes as I know growing from seed isn't ideal for good quality fruit but it's a passion project lol

Any tips to keep this guy happy indoors in the winter? I do have grow lights, and my basement is tropical temperatures in winter due to a wood stove, but dry. Any tips would be great!

First dried pod of the year from the garden

I've been keeping seed from these beans for 5 years now. The original variety name is Dwarf Horticultural bean. It's a type of cranberry beans that I have come to enjoy. The pods are great young as green beans but their magic is the dried beans. So creamy but keep good texture. My favorite is a handful or two in a pot of maple baked beans made with navy beans. Adds some great texture to the pot 🤤

Almost done mind the dirty garden hands, just planted out my fall greens when I found this dried pod haha

Coldframe! Second attempt!

My second fall season with a coldframe. This season I am going with the inground bed versus a raised bed. I also started seeds way earlier to give the plants a chance to mature before the sunlight really dips.

In this bed I have: Dwarf Curly Kale (two varieties), and a yellow Swiss Chard. I also just direct sowed Bloomsdale Longstanding Spinach which is my favorite! I actually overwintered Bloomsdale spinach last year in the coldframe. I didn't get much of a fall harvest off it, but it put me ahead in greens once the raised bed thawed out in April!

I have one more smaller coldframe to plant out once I make room in the garden and seedlings in that tray get bigger!

Age cap for same gender siblings sharing room

Hey all!

I hope this is allowed here. I want some opinions!

We are in the matching process of our journey and a same gender sibling set has come up. We only have one bedroom available without having to do major renovations or buy a new house 😅

What age would you say generally speaking couple two boys (bio siblings) share a room? From my own experience my brother and I only shared a room until we were like maybe 7 or 8 but it was due to living arrangements at the time. And my husband has only a sister so they never really shared a room ever.

To add, there is only legal requirements for age cap by law for opposite gender kids where we live.

Help with my gravity readings!

I need some help with figuring out current gravity. First picture was on June 30 when I first set it to ferment. Second picture is today.

If my math is right, it's only at like 5%. And it's really really sweet tasting. I like a drier wine. I'm curious as to why it hasn't dried off.

Edit to add: it is blueberry wine!

What would you plant here?

We have been toying with putting a garden along the bottoms of our fence. The thing is, this is our septic weeper feild. Where you see the sun, is where it is from about 1pm to dusk this time of year.

I was thinking hydrangeas but Im not sure if their root system is too aggressive for a weeper system.

What religious symbols do you most align with?

Hey all,

Just kinda curious what others use as their religious symbol of choice on their path? I have never really felt at home with the Cross.

I feel the most connection with The Tree of Life. I wear a silver Tree of Life pendant inlaid with diamonds evey single day.

I feel it best aligns to my belief of Mother Earth and God. The Tree of Life stretches between Mother Earth and the Heavens of God.

ISO: Men's 100% Wool Vest pattern intermediate level

Hey all,

I'm in search of a good intermediate men's vest pattern. I'm falling short, probably because they aren't really a common piece of men's wear these days.

Adopting a child on the Spectrum

Hey all!

We are just about certified and our worker has presented us with a child she thinks would be a good fit. She has explained that the child is level 1 on the autism spectrum. I'm trying to wrap my head around what that could look like and how/if we can support that child to our fullest.

She asked us to come up with a list of questions we might have for their worker and I'm kind of drawing a blank after some basic ones. Anything else I should ask about or keep in mind?

What I have so far:

Do they complete hygiene routines without or little support? (Shower, using the bathroom, etc)

Any history of running away?

How do they like to communicate?

What supports or programs are currently in place at school?

Any history of aggression whether with kids or adults?

Any other insight would most helpful!

How warm is too warm for goldfish?

Hey all!

I have some goldfish in a small outdoor setup. Yes yes, I know that goldfish need large tanks.

I plan to put the tank in the basement for their winter home. But we heat with a wood stove, in the basement. The average temperature downstairs sits at about 30C. Would that temp be too high for them in a 55 to 70 gallon tank?

Today I learned about the Winsome Fly biocontrol for Japanese beetles

I am in Ontario, Canada. I have always just used no mercy approach to Japanese Beetles. Soapy water and a flick. I was told not to kill the ones with white dots on it as it's a winsomefly egg.

Well I just went out to the garden and low and behold, the winsomefly egg on this beetle. Pretty freaking cool!

Absolute bumper crop this year!

After my worst winter losses ever, to the most honey pulled at a single harvest. 175lbs of honey spun out this morning, and supers placed back on colonies to keep filling!

Not to mention going from 5 surviving colonies to 11 with walkaway splits.

We are most likely almost upon our mid-summer dearth. Which will pick back up from Mid August to early September.

Absolute wild summer here in Central Ontario, Canada!

Bean salad is totally underrated!

Literally. Throw whatever dressing you want on some cold beans and you got a good meal!

Today was pinto, navy and blue jay beans with some fresh celery from the garden (leaves and all), green onion, and a basic homemade balsamic vinaigrette.

Is this normal?

They seem to get super crispy. Only in a few days of finishing the hang dry. Any ideas how to fix it? Will putting into a closed container help to finish it from here and start a bit of fermentation?

A recent fav: beans and eggs

I've been cooking a pound of dried beans every Monday, and fitting them into meals all week. I recently discovered just how good they are in an egg scramble! Today's scramble is mushroom, onion leaves (did a bit of pruning of the onions in the garden), and bacon. With a bit of Worcester sauce 🤤

This week was a mix of navy, pinto and black beans.

Canadian Old Fashioned 🍁

Foxtrot by Forty Creek Distillery, a splash of maple syrup and a few dashes of bitters.

I picked this bottle up from the distillery in March and was told to savour it as they won't be making more. I popped the seal tonight. Hopefully I can hide it in the back and not touch it again for a while 😅

Beans have no right being this pretty

Getting some beans soaking for tomorrow night's dinner. A basic three bean medley. Kidney, black turtle, and navy beans.

How do you like my gangly ladies 🤣

I started these way too early, they got way too leggy. Then shocked when I put them outside. I've already had to break off flower stalks. I think a few leaves are almost ready to harvest. Definitely a learning curve with these ones! Haha

Next year I'm starting much closer to last frost than mid February 🤣 but I might get a tiny bit to play with this year anyways.

Expedition Scout Backlight stopped working after 2 weeks

Any tips on why my backlight may have stopped working? I was up lastnight and tried to check the time and only two little squares in the bottom near the 6 lit up. I'm tempted to send back to Amazon or Timex for warranty. But I want to see if there could be an easy reason for this.
