I'm looking for some advice regarding a freelance recruitment payment that has been pending for over two months.

The agreement was:

- Payment would be made 7 days after the candidate joined.
- If a candidate left before completing 30 days, I would provide a free replacement.

I successfully placed 2 candidates. They completed 34 days and 31 days respectively before resigning. They were part of a larger group of around 4–5 employees who all left around the same time, but I had only recruited these two.

Despite the agreed payment timeline being 7 days after joining, the client kept delaying payment for over two months. Whenever I followed up, there was always another excuse.

Now they've suddenly told me they won't be paying me at all. On WhatsApp, they even sent me a voice note saying something along the lines of, "If you believe the candidates' story, then I won't pay you," and then they deleted the voice note shortly afterward. Unfortunately, I don't have the recording, but I do have the rest of the chat history showing the delayed payment discussions.

The frustrating part is that I wasn't even refusing to help. I've recently started a full-time job and stopped freelancing, but I was still willing to provide replacement candidates free of charge as a goodwill gesture, even though, according to our agreement, both candidates had already completed more than 30 days.

Do I have any legal recourse here? Would WhatsApp chats be sufficient evidence if I decide to send a legal notice or file a recovery claim? The amount isn't huge, but it's significant enough that I don't want to simply let it go, especially because it feels like they're refusing to pay after benefiting from my work.

Any advice on the best course of action would be greatly appreciated.

TL;DR: Freelance recruitment client agreed to pay me 7 days after candidates joined, with a replacement only if they left before 30 days. My two candidates left on day 31 and day 34 (as part of a larger team resignation), but the client delayed payment for 2 months and is now refusing to pay altogether.
