Just downloaded VLC and it's slower than Windows Media Player

I'm on a Lenovo laptop and I've heard a lot of good things about VLC, so wanted to give it a try. I don't know why, but it takes much longer to open even the smallest video files, compared to the default Media Player. Also, whenever I resume the video after pausing there is no sound for about a second, which is very annoying. Why?

EDIT: Excluding the VLC installation folder from Windows Security scan fixed the problem! Thanks u/ian1035nr!

Was I incorrect? 钓鱼 Vs 去钓鱼

Since 钓鱼 is a verb here, to me it sounds like it should be accepted, no? And yes, I know Duo sucks, I also have proper classes twice a week, but it's something I like to do to keep me engaged with the language when on the metro 😄

Has anyone else had this audio bug?

I only started seeing it around a week ago, I'm not sure whether it's related to the new update.

During the listening exercises, the app usually automatically plays the audio once, without the need to press the speaker button. Sometimes, however, it will play the audio from the previous exercise/sentence. Only after pressing the button manually, it plays the correct audio.

It's especially annoying when the lesson is easy (like the character lessons in Chinese) and you want to do them quickly. It's easy to input the wrong thing, if you forget to press the button again to play the correct audio.

I noticed it's not a random audio, it's always the audio from the previous sentence. So if the correct answer in question 5 was 帮助, the app will play the first audio for 帮助 for question 6, even though the correct answer is 便宜.

Has anyone else experienced it in the Chinese or other courses? Known bug or a phone issue?

How to buy a global version of Xiaomi Watch 5?

After buying my Global HK Xiaomi phone on Taobao I was hoping I could do the same for this watch, but after waiting for half a year, I still can't find any sellers for it.

Are there any other ways to buy a global version while in China?

Dragon Boat Festival events in BJ

It's my first Dragon Boat festival here in Beijing and I was curious what kind of events/activities are available here over the weekend? Can be free or paid. What is the best place to find them online?

Popular English language pop? Song

It started this way with this vocal line. It's an older song, I think maybe from around 15-20 years ago? Don't remember any lyrics.

How to remove empty tags?

I searched the sub but only found mentions of how to delete hundreds of tags using regex. Is there a way to just remove single unused tags? I couldn't find this option in the web version or the app, thanks!

Why can't I buy contact lenses on JD?

I'm trying to use WeChat Pay to buy my contacts on JD from the official Bausch & Lomb store, but it looks like it's only available for Chinese people with IDs? I've translated all the options to find one that would allow me to buy it, but couldn't find one. I've asked my Chinese colleagues in the office too and they also have no clue why it's for Chinese only. In the end, I used one of their accounts and sent back the money, but it's a bit annoying that I can't do it myself.

How do you buy contact lenses in China without a Chinese ID?

EDIT: Solved with your help, thanks CrazyCanuck! It looks like there was a permanent 15 CNY government subsidy on the listing that was impossible to remove and required an ID check (since there's a purchase limit per customer) - this was the source of the problem. What initially confused me (and others in the comments, it seems!) is that there was also an additional 10.5 CNY subsidy for using JD Pay on top of that. This one, however, could be removed by choosing another payment method.

Resolved the problem by finding another listing without the government subsidy and paying with WeChat.

Do they have anyone left to proofread that AI slop? I swear to god the quality of those lessons is going downhill.

Even though I understood the Chinese sentence perfectly, I spent a good 5mins trying to figure out what they are trying to say in English here. And still failed.

With the VPNs failing recently, I've been thinking about just abandoning it whatsoever and moving to Chinese app and website alternatives to fully embrace my recent move to China. Some example of the alternatives I'm currently using:

YouTube -> Bilibili: I was surprised to see how much English content (including reuploads from YT) are available. Currently, we're watching Ludwig and Michael's Tip2Tip entirely fansubbed in Chinese. What a blast.

Instagram -> Rednote: An obvious choice, not much else to add. Never used TikTok myself, not big on social media anyway.

Spotify -> NetEase Music: Really cheap subscriptions and I could pretty much find all my western songs there. For some artist, there's even more songs available than Spotify! My friend also recently told me that you don't need VPN for Spotify but I haven't confirmed it yet.

Google Translate -> Baidu Translate: This is where I actually miss the OG. Baidu has the same functions, like image translations etc. but I feel it always performs a bit worse, compared to Google.

What are the other apps that you use instead of the western ones? What's your default search engine? Also, what are some of the western apps/websites you know available without VPN (like Duolingo)? I feel like WhatsApp is sometimes working without VPN for me too?

Thanks!

I have my Chinese bank card linked to Alipay and everything worked well on Taobao for about 2 months, then suddenly it stopped. I can't use the Alipay option on any purchases anymore - Taobao asks me to add a bank card, which I can't do, because it wants a Chinese ID number and there's no option to use a passport.

I can still use Alipay normally everywhere else: shops, metro etc., just not for online shopping. WeChat payment still works on Taobao, but I can't use it for this particular seller.

Has anyone encountered this before? It's been like this for a couple of months now, previously I just used WeChat Pay instead, but this time it's not available.
