Whistling Dune Bay in Inner Mongolia

I'll be travelling to Inner Mongolia and visiting Hohhot and Ordos soon. I'm trying to find a way to squeeze in a visit to Whistling Dune Bay on the way back from Ordos to Hohhot. The plan is to leave Ordos after breakfast, visit the Dune and then go to Hohhot to check-in to the hotel in the evening. Has anyone been there and knows how I can get there using public transport?

Need advice - not being able to go to the gym for a month feels terrible

Due to a minor surgery + logistics around it I won't be able to go to the gym for around a month. I'm a person who loves exercising, I'm at the gym at least 3 days a week, eat clean, take my protein and supps, you know - the whole '30s male fitness lifestyle' package. I love how my body reacts to gym, makes me feel more energetic, but also grounds me mentally, stops me from overthinking and calms me down.

Because of that I dread the idea of not being able to do it for an entire month. Obviously, I don't like losing progress, but most importantly I'm afraid it'll put me in a terrible headspace.

Has anyone have any tips on how to manage this worry? Are there any non-strenuous alternatives (swimming is also not an option sadly) that would help me get through? This is my first surgery in a while, and the procedure itself is not scary, it's just I hate taking such a long break from the thing that makes me happier in life. Thanks for all advice!

How do I know if I have dry eye before my SMILE/PRK surgery?

The clinic asked me about dry eyes before the surgery, but I honestly don't know. I mean, I do feel discomfort after wearing contacts and/or staring at computer screen for too long. It does get worse indoors with AC, pretty much 0 fatigue outdoors. But I never get stinging, burning, vision problems, feeling like there's something in/on my eyes. It's not painful, just mildly annoying discomfort.

Most of the time it's a feeling similar to eyes feeling heavy or like there's a slight pressure behind them. I don't rub them, but if I gently press on a side of a closed eye with my hand, then it makes a squeezy sound like some air is released and it brings temporary comfort.

Is this possibly related to a dry eye or just fatigue and it doesn't affect my potential surgery? I said unsure for now and they didn't seem to bother me much more about it. We did all kinds of tests and they didn't mention it afterwards either.

Corneas too thin for SMILE (477) - is there hope?

The clinic basically said their bottom line for surgery is 480, so I'm only 3 microns short. Is there still hope to try other clinics to see if they can accept me for SMILE or should I start looking into other procedures like ICL?

I'm 34yo, with -2.5 in each eye and no other eye conditions otherwise. My prescription hasn't changed for over 10 years now.

SMILE eye surgery in Beijing (EuroEyes / Tongren Hospital)

I'm considering a SMILE eye surgery here in Beijing and I'm thinking about going with EuroEyes with Dr. Petrunya. Their prices seem to be great compared to some public hospitals, like Tongren.

Has anyone had any experiences with this type of surgery in Beijing and have any recommendations? Thanks!

Your giffgaff mobile number will be disconnected if you don't use it soon

I've recently received the above text from giffgaff saying that if I don't use my SIM before August 7th, my number will be deleted.

I'm currently living abroad and don't use the phone, but I still need it to receive texts for login and verification purposes. What is the best and cheapest way to prevent it expiring?

Feeling a bit down - convince me supporting K-POP industry is morally good

Hey all! I've just watched yet another video about k-pop and my heart sank a bit further. I can't stop perceiving it as a predatory and abusive machine praying on young people and destroying their self-esteem under a guise of art, where in reality their only goal is to maximise profits by all means. Sort of like Labubus instill unhealthy gambling habits under a disguise of cute monsters. I see both as fake and evil industries that try to convince people they are 'happy and wholesome', unfortunately often succeeding.

I was never a fan myself, but some of my friends listen to k-pop and have their favourite acts. I'm just struggling to reconcile my outlook with them just enjoying their hobbies. Usually, I don't bring those things up, as I hate to be the person ringing the alarm bell every time k-pop is mentioned - I see how it could be annoying to them. But also I feel like it's morally wrong to support such an industry, so it hurts to see some of my friends fall into it's trap.

So I wanted to ask you, other fans - I'm curious to see your outlook on this, how do you feel about the shady business practices and could you highlight some of the positives of k-pop for me? Just for me to try and see it in brighter colours and relate to those friends more.

I'm not here to argue or start wars with anyone btw, I'm a sensitive person guided by empathy and honestly each time I'm hearing news about k-pop industry, rampant capitalism, political divides, wars, etc., it just makes me a bit sad about the state of the world :(

A chill song where the vocal goes like this:

So this popped into my head the other day when writing a song, but I have a weird feeling that I've heard it somewhere before. I absolutely have no idea about the lyrics, but I think the song was in English and not too obscure. Not a weird genre, pretty much radio music, I think.

How to buy a laptop as someone who is having borderline panic attacks when using laptops?

Let me just explain why. For my entire life I've been cursed with the most ridiculous problems when using computers. Just to give you an example, once I had an issue when my monitor started to constantly turn off and back on again after around 20mins of playing games, but only some of them. No one could help me online, I tried everything and no one had any idea what it was. In the end, it was a structural issue with the house - the socket couldn't provide enough power for both the laptop and the monitor, so the monitor was intermittently losing power when the laptop was drawing more while gaming. Only discover it when taking the laptop for a gaming session to my friends house - problem immediately solved.

But I feel like these days the technology is just getting worse and worse and there are more problems. Normally, I'd just stop using laptops, but unfortunately I have to for work. This idea of being trapped in an unreasonable situation makes me lose my mind. I spiral into panic attacks and though I don't think about acting on it, the thought that it'll always be like that is straight up depressing. It all just seems illogical to me. I have millions of voices in my head and I can't quiet them when something like that happens.

I bought a new Dell laptop with Windows for work in January. I was told it will do the job just fine. Only 6 months later I already see it failing on the most simple tasks - I try to rename files and nothing happens, I have to try again. I double click to open a file and nothing happens, or it takes ages to open a single PNG image. It's like being gaslit every day, it makes me lose my sanity.

When searching for laptop recommendations, it seems like all reviews are focusing on things I don't care about it like using it for gaming, screen resolution or refresh rate, and technicalities that are not important for me. I just want a laptop that opens a file when I want to open it, moves files from one folder to another when needed and opens a browser and lets me browse web. I only need internet, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, you know the gist. It I can't seem to find the laptop that does it smoothly. That's all I need.

I spend almost £600 in January and I am already spiraling when using this thing. I can't afford to make this kind of purchase every year. I want something I can use normally for longer. Should I switch to Apple? I just need the simplest tool that fails the least often.

Computers/laptops are the only thing that gives me those thoughts btw I absolutely love being with people, I love playing and creating music, driving a car, just pretty much doing anything else. Nothing else brings me even a fraction of panic attacks, anger and depression I get from using computers. I go about my day and take care of things until I have to use a computer. Then everything stops working logically.

How can I live in a modern society that demands the use of them? What can I buy on my situation? No drills, just the bare ones functionalities that just work and don't fail?

Sorry for a long and chaotic post kind of in the middle of yet another spiral with thought racing after my computer decided ctrl+c won't work today on my Word document and I had to restart it.

I'm so sorry again if it's not the right place, but honestly no idea where to look for recommendations.

A website to track censorship changes/bans in western films in China

Every time I go to the cinema here to watch a western film, I can't escape the feeling that some things might've been changed/cut without me even knowing it.

Is there a website where I could check if any changes were made for the Chinese release?

EDIT: I found a similar thread, but it's from 14 years ago, and the answer at that time seemed to be 'there's none'. Curious if anything has changed since! https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/zl358/database_of_changes_to_foreign_films_released_in/

Just downloaded VLC and it's slower than Windows Media Player

I'm on a Lenovo laptop and I've heard a lot of good things about VLC, so wanted to give it a try. I don't know why, but it takes much longer to open even the smallest video files, compared to the default Media Player. Also, whenever I resume the video after pausing there is no sound for about a second, which is very annoying. Why?

EDIT: Excluding the VLC installation folder from Windows Security scan fixed the problem! Thanks u/ian1035nr!

Was I incorrect? 钓鱼 Vs 去钓鱼

Since 钓鱼 is a verb here, to me it sounds like it should be accepted, no? And yes, I know Duo sucks, I also have proper classes twice a week, but it's something I like to do to keep me engaged with the language when on the metro 😄

Has anyone else had this audio bug?

I only started seeing it around a week ago, I'm not sure whether it's related to the new update.

During the listening exercises, the app usually automatically plays the audio once, without the need to press the speaker button. Sometimes, however, it will play the audio from the previous exercise/sentence. Only after pressing the button manually, it plays the correct audio.

It's especially annoying when the lesson is easy (like the character lessons in Chinese) and you want to do them quickly. It's easy to input the wrong thing, if you forget to press the button again to play the correct audio.

I noticed it's not a random audio, it's always the audio from the previous sentence. So if the correct answer in question 5 was 帮助, the app will play the first audio for 帮助 for question 6, even though the correct answer is 便宜.

Has anyone else experienced it in the Chinese or other courses? Known bug or a phone issue?
