First quick sesh w/ the Coyota

Pretty much got it where I want it. I still haven’t put the brushless system in yet. And haven’t installed the upgraded servo (AGFRC). Ive been experimenting with brushed and it’s got my considering a better brushed setup. I like the more intimate connection you have to the terrain, having to paint the rocks with your finger, much more like 1/1 imo.

QUICK! Need opinions on paint trim

Help me decide whether to paint the roof, wheel wells, and grill black or same color as body? And quick before it’s too dang hot outside to get it done today 🔥☀️🔥

Options I’m considering:

Option 1: roof only

Option 2: roof and grill

Option 3: roof and wells

Option 4: roof, wells, and grill

Note: image above is of base layer of rust. Body color will be a dull red.

Thanks boys! 🤙

IR40 Apex tire selection

I’ve been struggling to find the right wheels to go with the Injora IR40 body. I am debating whether to run 1.0 or 1.3 wheels and tires. Im struggling to find the style wheels I want in 1.3 (retro, or just appropriate for the IR40). Image above is the best and really only candidate I could find in 1.3. I have some questions and thought it would be helpful to get opinions on a few things as well.

IDEAL SITUATION: I find a capable 1.0 tire that has a very large OD and Width. What’s the largest OD and Width 1.0 tire you know of and whats the numbers?

Do we think that the IR40 would look more scale with 1.0 tires and wheels?

Would the smaller diameter (1.0 vs 1.3) affect performance in a negative or a positive way, if so how much and in what ways?

Project update: Today I will be painting the body, and after that it’s just minor details, mounting, and getting the right wheels and tires. Cant wait to post the finished build!

Update: Injora shocks install Apex

Wanted to provide an update to my earlier post regarding an issue I ran into. As well as share some of my experience with installing Injora shocks on my Redcat Apex. While attempting to install Injora 59mm shocks (trx4m version) I discovered the hardware was too large in diameter to install on the Apex. The hardware that shipped with the shocks was M2.5. And the hardware I needed was M2.

I found a stainless hardware set on Amazon with all different lengths and sizes. Now with the right size bolts I was able to proceed.

Next and final issue I encountered was that after mounting the shocks there was binding occurring between the top of shock body and the chassis frame. Was able to circumvent this by using a couple nuts that were included with the hardware set to act as a spacer (image 1).

On the fourth and final shock (front driver side) the lower bolt would not back out when removing the stock shock. I tried everything and it would not budge. I finally managed to remove it but mangled the plastic mounting flange on the front axle housing pretty bad (image 2). I expect it to fail soon.

Anyone know of aluminum axle housing for the Apex??

Help! Injora shocks hardware too big 😭

Just slammed into a major roadblock while attempting to install 59mm Injora shocks on my Redcat Apex. The hardware (screws) that came with the shocks are too big. They are too thick to fit through even the Injora brass links eyelet. Photos for reference of size and style difference.

Please help- I dunno what to do from here. Does anyone know where I can buy the appropriate hardware? I could probably find it but more importantly how do I find out what size I need? Thanks!! 🙏

IR40 lighting question for Redcat Apex build

Hey guys so I’m in the process of preparing an Injora IR40 body to run on my Redcat Apex, and I have a question regarding the lighting setup. Can the lights that come with the IR40 body be plugged directly into the receiver, or do I need a separate light controller?

If I do need a controller, could someone point me toward the correct one for this application?

Also, if there are any other things I should know about installing the lights, I’d appreciate any advice- this is my first time dealing with body mounted lighting on a crawler.

TIA for any help, tips, or photos of your setups!

The Coyote Usually Looks Best on Black Wheels… Right?

I’ve always thought the Coyote looked best on black wheels. They’re clean, aggressive, and just seem to fit the truck perfectly.

That said, I wanted to try something different and ended up mounting these bronze/gold-ish wheels. The weird thing is… I actually like them. They give the truck a different personality and somehow seem to work with the body.

Now I’m stuck. I know I like the bronze wheels, but I genuinely can’t decide whether I like them more than black wheels or if black still looks better overall.

What do you guys think?

Black wheels or bronze wheels?

Bonus points if you tell me why.

Help- where did I go wrong 🛞 ?

Just ordered some 1.3 JConcepts Ruptures for my Redcat Apex. The king Trekkers I’m currently running are also 1.3s. Why are they so much smaller they look like 1.0s. What am I missing here? Do the JConcepts just run small or did I buy the wrong tire or something else.. TIA

Best performing tire? 💪 🛞

Okay friends, submit your number one top performing crawling tire- able to maintain a deadly grip on variety of terrain for 1.3 and/or 1.9. If you could only rely on one tire for each size what is your go-to?

I’m new to crawling and endeavoring to learn from this amazing community every chance I get. Grateful I have y’all to ask these questions rather than google it, or worse.. gpt 😬 TIA

Project IJ - Chassis selection?

I’m planning a build around the project IJ body. Which Vanquish chassis kit would you choose for this build and why? Portal or straight axles and why? I don’t like the VRD’s axle mounted servo. Which puts my consideration mainly between the H10 vs VS4-10. VS4-10 having chassis mounted servo and H10 having axle mounted servo but different design that hides the servo behind the axle providing a more scale aesthetic. Which of these chassis will provide a better scale appearance as well as performance. I want a scale truck that is a very capable crawler.

Weight + low CG = traction?

Help me understand the role unsprung weight plays in the overall performance equation of an off-road/crawler rig.

I just finished a YouTube video about someone’s Coyote build where he mentioned that one of the goals of the build was keeping the truck as light as possible. This threw me off. I’m new to crawling, but not off-roading in general, and I’ve always understood that adding weight low on the rig helps increase traction by putting more force on the tires, allowing the vehicle to translate torque to the ground more effectively.

So I’m trying to better understand the tradeoff here. At what point does reducing overall vehicle weight become more advantageous than adding low unsprung weight for traction and stability? As I’m sure it’s circumstantial- let’s use the Axial SCX10.3 Coyote as the case study. Is there an amount of unsprung weight that would cross the line from helping to harming performance? If so how much (assuming stock motor/esc/servo)? The Coyote weighs in at 83.95oz (2380g) or 5.25 lbs.

Help me pick my interim build

Hey guys,

Need some help deciding between three rigs and I’m completely torn.

I’m new to crawling, got my first rig couple months ago now (Apex18) and the rest is history. Now planning a full custom 1/10 scale build from a chassis, but I realized I really want an RTR to build, learn on, and enjoy in the meantime.

Right now I’m stuck between:

  • SCX/18 LC80
  • TRX4m - F-150
  • TRX4m - Defender

I genuinely want all three and love them for different reasons.

The LC80 is feature packed and honestly probably the best choice as far as value per dollar. I’ve always had an affinity with the square body Fords and will have to, at least at some point, get the F-150. The Defender has sentimental ties as my dad was a Land Rover nut who restored old Land Rovers and kept a yellow diecast model of the defender on his desk.

What I care about most is:

  • scale realism/ aesthetics
  • capability
  • aftermarket support

Also:

With your pick, what would be the first three performance upgrades you would do? (wheels, tires, and inserts are a given)

Thanks for helping me think this through!

Fcx18 - New Purchase Help

New to crawling here, I got my first truck (apex18) approx 2 months ago and well.. you know the story. So I’m planning a 1/10 build from scratch (chassis). But realize I need another rtr rig to build on while I’m building the 1/10 rig. Want something scale but capable. What better place to turn than the FCX18 LC80 which certainly offers both those things right? So I have a few questions for the guild.

  • It’s offered in 3 different color trims. Are they the same truck in different colors? I ask because the 1/10 scale offers the pro version which comes in a specific color.

  • Was unable to find tire size- what size tires you running on this?

  • Wheels, tires, inserts go without saying of course but what other performance upgrades should I order with the truck? Any weak points (structural or performance) to address immediately? Beyond that- top 3 upgrades to do off rip?

  • What size batteries are you running?

  • Connector type?

  • Will the stock system handle 3s?

  • Is brushless motor, esc, and 3s capability upgrade common with this rig or does the brushed system suffice?

Huge thanks in advance to any and all for your time and wisdom!
