Help me pick my interim build

Hey guys,

Need some help deciding between three rigs and I’m completely torn.

I’m new to crawling, got my first rig couple months ago now (Apex18) and the rest is history. Now planning a full custom 1/10 scale build from a chassis, but I realized I really want an RTR to build, learn on, and enjoy in the meantime.

Right now I’m stuck between:

  • SCX/18 LC80
  • TRX4m - F-150
  • TRX4m - Defender

I genuinely want all three and love them for different reasons.

The LC80 is feature packed and honestly probably the best choice as far as value per dollar. I’ve always had an affinity with the square body Fords and will have to, at least at some point, get the F-150. The Defender has sentimental ties as my dad was a Land Rover nut who restored old Land Rovers and kept a yellow diecast model of the defender on his desk.

What I care about most is:

  • scale realism/ aesthetics
  • capability
  • aftermarket support

Also:

With your pick, what would be the first three performance upgrades you would do? (wheels, tires, and inserts are a given)

Thanks for helping me think this through!

Fcx18 - New Purchase Help

New to crawling here, I got my first truck (apex18) approx 2 months ago and well.. you know the story. So I’m planning a 1/10 build from scratch (chassis). But realize I need another rtr rig to build on while I’m building the 1/10 rig. Want something scale but capable. What better place to turn than the FCX18 LC80 which certainly offers both those things right? So I have a few questions for the guild.

  • It’s offered in 3 different color trims. Are they the same truck in different colors? I ask because the 1/10 scale offers the pro version which comes in a specific color.

  • Was unable to find tire size- what size tires you running on this?

  • Wheels, tires, inserts go without saying of course but what other performance upgrades should I order with the truck? Any weak points (structural or performance) to address immediately? Beyond that- top 3 upgrades to do off rip?

  • What size batteries are you running?

  • Connector type?

  • Will the stock system handle 3s?

  • Is brushless motor, esc, and 3s capability upgrade common with this rig or does the brushed system suffice?

Huge thanks in advance to any and all for your time and wisdom!

Please Identify This Body!

I’m planning a build for my SCX10.3 and I FINALLY found the body style I want to use. Problem is… I can’t figure out what the base body actually is.

I know the truck in these screenshots is heavily modified/customized. But I’m desperate to identify the original body shell underneath it all.

I believe I found the same body again in another clip (last image), which makes me think it’s some kind of Jeep hardbody/truggy conversion.

Does anybody recognize this body or know what the base shell is? Please help me track this thing down.

(Unnecessary) upgrades - Apex

Installed a couple goodies today:

  • Brass Injora high clearance suspension links
  • Stainless drive shafts Injora Unnecessary really but I can’t help myself. Only planning a couple more things before I consider it done (performance wise that is..)

Brand new to the hobby btw got this Apex18 as my first rig last month and loving every minute of it 🤙

Help: first from scratch build

I’m fairly new here and after getting my first crawler (Apex18) and falling in love with the hobby, I’ve decided to embark on my first build. After some questions and research I chose to go with the SCX 10.3 chassis. Which means now it’s time to compile a parts list of all else needed to complete the build.

So I thought it best to consult you, dear fellow hobbynauts. My goal with this rig is to have a highly capable scale crawler, that may enjoy an occasional trail ride.

Taking this into consideration- Please give me your best suggestions for the following:

  1. Transmitter & Receiver
  2. Motor & ESC (brushless censored pls)
  3. Steering Servo
  4. 12.3” WB Rock Crawler Body (Toyotas pls)
  5. Wheels & Tires & inserts
  6. Battery (already have a good charger)
  7. Dig Servo

To give you idea of my budget for the build, and the ballpark I’d like to be in caliber and price of parts. Want parts that are quality enough to build a great truck worth building but not go far past that mark into overkill. I was looking at the

  • Hobbywing QuicRun Fusion SE FOC 2-in-1 motor esc combo $90
  • Steering servo EcoPower WP715 Low Profile High Torque Brushless Rock Crawling/Bashing Servo $100 (prefer injora— couldn’t find one less than 175)

Guys thank you all so much in advance. Im super excited to include the community in this project!

Okay boys, I’ve decided to go with the trx4 Bronco.. and now I have a new list of questions!

First- what batteries do you guys like to run (brand, size, and what connector does the trx use?)

Second- are there any adjustments or tweaks I should make right out of the box? Anything worth tuning immediately? Suspension, gearing, diff settings, servo saver, etc?

And lastly, what are the FIRST upgrades you guys recommend in order of priority for actual performance/capability gains?

I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually spent time with these trucks before I start throwing money at random parts.. this stuff ain’t cheap 🤨

Huge thanks in advance!!

Looks amazing and I’m considering for my first 1/10 rig. Upgradability parts etc? What’s the catch here??

Recently got a Redcat Apex 18 as my first crawler and I’m already wanting to push it more toward a scale build. Yes, I know it’s a comp style truck.

The stock body is okay, but I’m really wanting to move into a hardbody setup or at least something that looks more scale.

I’m not afraid to cut, punch, modify. Just trying to understand what people have actually made work.

Thanks in advance for any input, builds, pics shared 🤙
