Female Authors in Contemporary Fiction that match my likes

I’m a huge book nerd (mostly fantasy recently) that wants to expand my horizons a bit more. I like fantasy/sci-fi (honestly Robin Hobb, Sarah Monette, and Elizabeth Moon were the only female authors in that space I read and loved).

I want to get back into some more modern fiction. My favorite male author in that field was Jonathan Tropper. I LOVED A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Can anyone recommend contemporary fiction (I’ll take fantasy and science fiction recommendations also) in the same vein?

Even if the main character is a woman written by a man if you have ideas.

Last stand episodes that hit hard?

I asked a similar question in movie suggestions but what episodes of a last stand hit you hardest? Any genre. Whether the MCs live or die.

Examples like BSG when the Galactica does a in orbit jump, or SGC in Stargate against the Ori, Spartacus, Jericho, etc.

Obviously I’m a sci-fi nerd but looking for any genre.

Ballads or songs with a story

Looking for some good songs that tell or story like Ringo by Lorne Green, Big John by Jimmy Dean or You Don’t Mess Around With Jim by Jim Croce.

They don’t have to be classics - just something that tells a tale with music.

Edit3: had the overlords parse a list out for me here is the results as of 8PM PST: https://ballads.infornography.net/

Edit2: couple that came to mind I haven’t seen mentioned Rodeo by Garth Brooks and This Cowboys Hat by Chris LeDoux. One Eyed Dan - Shovel and Rope. Konstantine - Something Corporate (loose fit).

Edit: wow! Left to make a cup of tea and came back to so many recommendations! Thank you! A lot of these I have not heard of. I’ll be making a playlist to listen to while packing tomorrow! I’ll come back and upvote everyone also. Thanks again!g

EDR CPU utilization issues

Over the past few weeks I’ve been receiving reports of horrible computer hang ups and in a lot of cases I’m seeing the MSSense service change from delayed start to automatic right before this occurs - it’s sometimes followed up by a CoPilot or Teams (or both update) and then the service switches back from automatic to delayed. The EDR process is one of the top hitters during this period along with SVChost and our RMM tool.

I’m curious if anyone has seen this or knows what is happening when this occurs.

I’ve been reading up on EDR exclusions and will look into excluding the RMM tool but the CoPilot update is not delivered by it and seems to be a trigger in some of these cases.

Suggestions for IT Engineering or Administration focused Podcasts or YouTube channels

I’m curious if anyone has podcasts around IT in general that they would recommend?

There’s quite a few CyberSecurity ones out there that I’ll listen to but just a general engineering podcast? I’d love it.

I don’t care if it’s Azure, AWS or even development. Stories from the trenches or even better what’s happening in Azure, MDM or similar.

I enjoy my Darknet Diaries but I’d love a more practical side whether it’s discussions or news bites. YouTube recommendations are welcome also but I’d like something I can listen to while working.

Home on iOS is only showing new posts

On the iOS app only have the Home option at the bottom and it shows posts that are minutes old. I think it used to show Hot sort or something similar. Is there a way to change this?

Local Meal Kits or Ready Meals

I've been thinking about starting a Meal Kit subscription again (HelloFresh or similar) and while doing some research online I've seen some bigger cities usually have a local option or two that provides similar kits. I was curious if Spokane had anyone doing something similar?

Kits for cook at home or even pre-packaged meals I'd be interested in looking at. I've had pretty good luck with HelloFresh in the past but when there is in an issue with missing or spoiled ingredients it was a pain. I'd also like the money to go local also if there is an option.

Yes - I can look up my own recipes and shop on my own. Just looking for convivence and variety due to time constraints lately.

Thanks for any tips!

My best friend killed himself years ago and now his sister died

I didn’t last long in the military. I enlisted in 2004 and didn’t like what we were doing. I had an older gentlemen at the time that took me under his wing and we became fast friends. I left as soon as I could but kept in touch with him when I was able.

4 years ago he took his life and left me a letter that I refused to open. I was mad. He stopped me from doing that and that did it himself? I hated myself for being mad at him but I hated him for being a hypocrite.

It took a long time to realize he was hurting so bad that he thought that was the only answer. I visited his family and met his mom and sister and it was beautiful.

I kept in touch with them for awhile until it got awkward with his sister (she had a family) and cut ties.

Last week I got the call that she passed. I haven’t dwelled on it yet but I hate myself for not being there for her like her brother was for me. Like I failed him once and then again.

Personal trainer for shoulder issues

I’m looking for a trainer that can work with shoulder issues. I tore my rotator cuff ten years ago and want to help find a trainer to get me back into lifting slowly.

A friend recommended Body by Biju that helped him but wanted a community recommendation before I committed.

Favorite educational VR applications or experiences?

I was planning on asking for the best astronomy application but now I'm curious about other learning experiences in VR. I think VR would be a great medium to revisit historical places or battles - if such a thing exists.

Favorite learning methods in VR?

SciFi/Fantasy/Post-Apoc Shows from 90s - early 00s?

Been on a Sci-Fi kick recently and started remembering some of the shows I liked when I was a bit younger. Just started the last season of 7 Days and want some suggestions of other shows. I have a pretty good list of shows collected so far (list below) but curious if anyone else had ideas.

[EDIT: Forgot to add Stargate or BSG as those are timeless to me - but they definitely fit.]

Earth: Final Conflict (1997)

First wave (1998)

Jericho (2006)

Jeremiah (2002)

John Doe (2002)

Journeyman (2007)

Odyssey 5 (2002)

Reaper (2007)

Seven Days (1998)

Sliders (1995)

The 4400 (2004)

The Outer Limits (1995)
