Ladies of Reddit - Do you like men with long hair?

My hair goes down to my butt. Always have to pull it to the side before I sit down. Every time I go out to the market or the park or whatever women stop me and compliment me on my hair. Just curious how many of you like it that way. I stopped cutting my hair in the 6th grade. I am in my 60s now...

Breaking down a riff as you learn it

When I find a new lick or even song I want to learn I break it up into easily digestible segments. I practice a segment and then practice it again with any previous segments that I have completed. I suspect this is common practice. As a Tele player I recently ran across a youtuber that was focused on the Tele and played country.

He played a country lick that I really liked and decided to learn. About 13 bars I broke it down into a 9 bar segment and a 4 bar segment. I spent a few hours on the first segment and was able to play it at tempo consistently.

Then I started work on the second segment which proved to be a lot more challenging than the first part. I spent about a day practicing that on and off throughout the day and by the next day I was able to play it clean and at tempo.

Now it was time to assemble the two parts. The first part was just fine but the transition into the second part was abject failure. I assumed I just needed to hammer on it longer as persistence is typically the answer to these things.

In these instances I will put on some TV show and then practice while I watch the show. I typically do this in my home office unplugged while I stream some show from my NAS. So I did this with this second section for a solid hour and I was playing it without looking or even really thinking about it.

OK time to assemble the 2 parts and again the transition to the second part was abject failure. Now I have encountered this kind of thing before where the transition from one section to another is a serious challenge but I have always relied on persistence to overcome it and that generally works but that did not seem to be the answer here.

So I examine my playing of the second part in detail and then play both parts together. I see the issue and I correct it and BAM, perfect. Just by slowing down and taking a close look at what I am doing. In this instance I was practicing the second part by starting off with my index finger sliding into that section.

When I did the transition I was doing that slide with my first finger. That simple difference was all it took to screw me LOL. Anyway I thought I would share a simple practice issue - You ever run into a similar issue? Hope y'all are having a great day!

Intermittent display issue

I have 2 displays attached to my Mac Studio. A DELL U2412M which is an older 1080 panel attached with a C to displayport cable. I used to use it with my 2017 iMac 27" 5K. Never had any issues with it. The primary display is a Dell S2725QS 4K display attached via HDMI.

Randomly both displays will just go black, flicker for a moment and then return to displaying. This happens once every few days. The Studio is a M3U with 2TB SSD and 96GB Ram. Do you think that it's the studio or the displays? Any thoughts on a good way to diagnose this?

Does anyone here use a Promise Technology Pegasus3-R?

If so I have a question for you. When you sleep your mac does the 3-R periodically wake up and then after a few minutes go back to sleep?

Front or back?

My Studio faces away from me so that I have easy access to the ports as I am plugging in removable media all the time and it makes hitting the power switch easier. Anyone else do this?

Autologin Failure

So I have auto login turned on and it worked fine until recently. For basically, forever, iphone mirroring did not work on my mac. iPhone right next to the machine - would not work. Then I discovered a setting in the iphone mirroring app's preferences (in the app itself, not system settings) called Authenticate Automatically. Once that was turned on the iphone mirroring magically worked.

Ever since doing this my auto login has not worked. I have to put in my PW everytime I awaken or power up my mac. Checking the auto-login feature in system settings it is still turned on for my user. So I can turn off the iPhone setting and I suspect it will return to normal. But why is it doing this and is there any way to have both things working?

Alternatives to Plex that run on QNAP TS-531X?

Are there alternatives to Plex that will run on my NAS and share a comparable feature set to the Plex system. While Plex has been an OK media server it does have longstanding issues. I hear of Jellyfin and Infuse but not sure if they will run on my QNAP. Moreover, will any of those allow migration of my move and tv libraries over? Our delivery platforms are all Apple - Mac/Apple TV/iPad.

Need some advice on divorce after long term seperation

I legally separated from my wife in the mid 90s. My wife was adamantly opposed to a divorce. TBH I just wanted out as I thought she was a psychopath. When I got a lawyer and she did the same we went to court after I initiated proceedings and my soon to be ex started screaming in the courtroom and was physically ejected from the courtroom and her lawyer dropped her.

To be honest I was afraid of her and what she might be capable of but eventually I was able to get away and ensure that she did not know how to contact me. She had 3 teenage children when we got married and there was a 15 year gap in our ages (she was older).

I have not spoken to or seen her in over 20 years but we are still married. I probably have PTSD from my last dealings with her. She lives with her daughter and still retains her married name. She is about 1000 miles away from me in another state.

We have no property in common nor any children in common. I would like to divorce her and marry my girlfriend. My question is can a para-legal handle the divorce or will I need to hire a lawyer to deal with it?

Some days I just want to end it all - Today is one of those days.

I am 70(m) and I have been married just over 25 years now.  No kids, we are both retired.  I knew my wife for about 5 years before we got married.  Lately though I find myself angry a lot with her.  I’ll start with the fact that there is barely any intimacy in our marriage.  Some kissing and some hugging but that is it.

I should mention we sleep in separate rooms as I snore.  I never had an issue with that because I prefer to sleep alone anyway.  We have not had sex in over 10 years as she always turns me down and when I try to inquire about it she says that penetration is too painful.

OK, I get that - See a Dr.  Nope that will never happen as she hates the medical industry.  Her perspective is that all they do is push whatever medication the pharma industry is pushing them to prescribe.

OK fine - How about just cuddling or spooning?  Nope she always turns me down.  And, no, it’s not a hygiene issue.  She just does not want to do it.  I get sick of rejection to be honest…

Beyond that, there are other issues that drive me nuts.  Her sleeping schedule is up all night and sleep all day so I will see her sometimes for maybe 3 hours in a day as my sleep schedule is more along the 11PM to 8AM lines.  Lately she will ask me things and then get angry with my response that I am mansplaining things to her.

Here is an example.  She asked me what capacitors are, what they get used for in a circuit and why they tend to die with age.  I explain all of this to her and point out that they have a life of about 20 years regardless of how much they are getting used as the liquid chemicals inside of them tend to dry out over time.

I explain it’s not the use but the time that kills them.  She does not get this point and is insisting that if a device is used less the caps will last longer and I try to refute this fact with her until the point where she is screaming at me about this and I just shut down and go into another room.

Next up is how much she tells me about what I am doing that is wrong.  When she gets up - today that was at 6PM, and I see her for the first time that day I want to greet her warmly and express affection for her.  But she does not give me a chance and instead immediately goes into some bitchfest about what I have done wrong lately.  Today it was I did not wash the handle of a spoon to her satisfaction.

Then it was how crappy a spice dispenser works and since it’s an issue, it’s my fault regardless if I ever use the thing or not.  This is an almost daily ritual with her.  And the list goes on at which point I I express my sorrow at coming into the same room where she is and go off to my office and close the door.  I will not see her again until tomorrow.

I am too old to get a divorce.  I am too old to find someone new.  Besides, I do love her.  But I am sick of all this shit.  Yes, there are always two sides to these stories but this is my side and my perspective.  There are days like today that I just want to eat a bullet.

Anyway - I just needed to vent. Thanks for reading this.

So what guitars do you own and why did you choose them?

I should preface this with the fact that I am not a cork sniffer. Each instrument I own was bought for a purpose. I own the following guitars (while some of these may be considered vintage now, they weren't when I bought them):

1971 Martin D-41 - My first acoustic steel string - Wanted one to record acoustic steel string.

1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom. Maple top and fretboard - My first electric - Always loved the LP tone.

1971 Guild 12 string jumbo. I wanted to record a 12 string acoustic.

1987 Fender 62 re-issue MIJ Stratocaster - Wanted to have that unmistakable Strat Tone also good for Dan covers. Replaced the stock pups with lace sensors.

1980 Yamaha classical - Wanted that beautiful nylon tone.

2010 Fender Am Std Tele - Had christmas bonus burning a hole in my pocket so I went down to Norm's and picked it up - Nice to have that Tele tone option as well.

Epiphone Doubleneck - Good for things like Hotel Cal and Stairway.

Deusenberg Fairytale - Nothing like covering David Lindley's amazing work with Jackson Browne.

OK, what do you have and why? If you have more than one of the same variety like multiple LPs, why? Since they mostly all sound alike.

I use a BASH script to simplify YT-dlp usage - Would anyone else want it?

I tend to write BASH script for all kinds of crap on my mac, yt-dlp being one of them. Here is the usage for the script:

ytv [-a | -s | -v] [-d] [-o <output_dir>] [-r <1080|720>] [-u] <YouTube Video ID or URL>

Options:

-a : audio only (mp3)

-s : video + subtitles

-v : full video (default)

-d : place downloads in a date-based subfolder (YYYY-MM-DD)

-o : override default base output directory

-r : preferred video resolution (1080 or 720; defaults to best available)

-u : perform Homebrew and yt-dlp update before downloading

You can pass an ID or a full URL to it. It has a hard coded destination folder in the script that you would need to update but other than that it's pretty generic. Also if your Youtube video ID starts with a hyphen you would need to supply the full URL as the hyphen will confuse the script.

Would this be of interest to anyone else? Not sure if I can just copy paste the script into reddit here - I could zip it up and toss it up on google drive tho.
