Base 44 has come a long way since my first go

I first used Base 44 and Floot several months ago to make mockups of a grand vision of mine called the Now Edition. Both did pretty well - I even had them competing (read more at my blog [http://aifanboyconfessions.blog\](http://aifanboyconfessions.blog) ) - but both were frustrating about having them go back and fix their mistakes/errors.

So as a newly semi-quasi-retired lifelong journalist, I decided, 'why not try again - this time creating a lil' local news website for me to post articles to?)

And I think Base 44 knocked it out of the park in impressive fashion. Yeah, I did offer up my former employer's website as being the kind of layout/format I wanted - and it didn't give me a Xerox copy, but something that's a conglomeration of the front- and back-ends I used at work over the past decade or two.

Compared to what many folks on these tools are trying to do, mine was pretty low-hanging fruit. But who doesn't like good fruit now and then?;-)

My point: If the tool let you down months ago, check out their latest models. You may be pleasantly surprised!

(And here's Floot's version of my previous project: [https://thenowedition.floot.app/\](https://thenowedition.floot.app/) )

(I hope I followed the rules here, I hate falling short/getting bounced;-/

Anyone else with Medium Android app hitting a frustrating new comment/reply issue?

Hi there! Say, just in past 2-3 days on my Android app, when I try to reply to a comment, the keyboard pops up and blocks the comment field. I hit the down arrow below the keyboard and it slides out of the way ... BUT when I put the cursor back in the field, keyboard slides up again! I tried some fixes Perplexity suggested - clearing cache, tried to rotate to landscape (it didn't.) Anyone else hit this and know if it's a known bug or a good workaround? Thanks!

Am I wrong/late to the party, or has the AI note-taking device field EXPLODED recently?

What a field! I swear, every day I see 3-4 new ones in my Facebook feed - you know how algorithms do that - and it makes me either want to buy Pocket or another RIGHT NOW, or see what comes before me tomorrow/next week, etc.!

The devices are such a vast, wide array (not to mention the software options) - of course they all promise the same or similar things, though in different ways!

So is ANYONE following in a separate newsletter or keeping track of the pros, cons and tradeoffs? It could be a huge graphic column - created through AI of course - or a wiki here, but boy it seems it would need to be updated daily (hourly)?

Anyone care to share their own journey - maybe you bought one, it wasn't quite what you wanted - then found another that fits perfectly? I am kicking the tires of the AI features in Evernote, and they are good - but a separate device sure seems like it'd have some benefits in simplicity, etc.!

Am I alone in wishing Evernote had a full calendar of its own?

I have trouble with Outlook Calendar on desktop not syncing with the one in the app on my phone, something to do with my use of IMAP or somesuch - and I sorta hate being 'forced' into Google Calendar. But since I have Evernote in both places, easily syncable, I finally looked into its calendar after years of only taking notes - and it only syncs with other calendars? How hard would it be to have its own calendar? No one else would like that?

A quasi-retired reporter returns to Base 44 - and easily in a few hours creates a local news showcase/website!

https://barneysbendbugle.base44.app/

I created another site, The Now Edition, last year in Floot and Base 44, and now that I've left my longtime job to care for my ill wife - but still need to keep my writing sharp and my local news reporting skills, too - I figured give Base 44 another try - and wow, it did this fun little site, and even with my endless picky tweaks it took only a few hours! I just wanted something between a WordPress blog and the separateness of Medium articles (a great platform BTW) - a lil' showcase for my writing. I didn't try to climb a mountain in terms of ads and subscribers etc., but it does have a simple comment system and ... I was very impressed.

Is there a sub that fits my idea: 'Rejecting the Blame Society'?

(And if not, would you be interested in one?;-)

I have had an occasional blog for years called Rejecting the Blame Society.

https://theblamesociety.wordpress.com/

Now that I have more time available, I'd like to make it more than a blog but not a book. A living, active place to interact with people about the issues and problems people have with politics from all sides and share positive avenues with others of like mind.

I have been on Reddit for some time and I'm mod for a couple small ones. I know there are huge challenges in attracting enough attention for it to feel worthwhile.

If this were the old days, with dozens of free good-looking forum platforms, I might go that way.

But even with AI, one of my favorite topics by the way, nobody seems to be focusing on a forum-first platform that feels like the old days. Call me Barney the Dinosaur :-)

I wonder if you think it's a good idea, or there's a better path? I don't think there is a sub quite like that, but I know that being unique is only a small piece of the puzzle toward what feels like a success here.

I've been involved with groups like Braver Angels, unite.us and the like, but none of them look at these issues quite the often humorous way I do, or can provide the fulfillment I think I'd feel by daily interaction with others seeking that New Path toward better governance.

I'm not looking to just provide another home for trolls or endless arguments that solve nothing. But just maybe a small grassroots movement of sorts that provides greater hope that government can solve or at least make progress on problems, not just blame them on the other side. At least with reddit's up and down votes, valuable discussion is usually rewarded and nasty trolls are submerged:-)

Thanks for reading! Any advice, supportive or kindly otherwise, most welcome.

BTW, I've tried to become a mod on bigger busier subs, like a local one, but usually get crickets, so I figure this could be the best way to really learn the parts of Reddit I've never fully embraced.

Exploding number of these small AI note takers - is anyone comparing?

I click once on Pocket in my Facebook feed, then comes Plaud, then Umevo, Boyo, Raycon ... I had no idea this field was exploding! You don't want to pick the one with the biggest marketing budget, but one that for example would help a reporter (still considering just sticking with Evernote which keeps adding these AI features.) It's incredible, the rabbit holes one goes down with just a click;-)

I had no idea AP articles on their website now allow comments

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention - and they are using a Canadian firm my former employer used, ViaFoura, to moderate them. The comments are basically just what you'd expect, and sortable much like Reddit/other sites (newest/oldest, most liked/replied to). https://apnews.com/

I have subscribed to Substacks at two email addresses - is there an easy way to combine?

Or for each one do I need to unsubscribe at one address and re-subscribe at the other?

I did search because I thought this might be a familiar issue. So far, no go - and finding a link to ask Substack support beyond the FAQs etc. feels impossible.

Thanks!

Proposed Deschutes County measure would elect commissioners by ranked-choice voting

Hi, my friends. So for this latest article, I moved from Medium to my long-standing WordPress "Leave it to Barney" blog - similar to the WP system I used for years at KTVZ.COM - because of the ease of embedding PDFs and YouTube videos, as this topic needs all the explanation and background it can get. Tradeoffs abound - I'm referring to the posting platform, not the topic - but isn't that true of all tech, and maybe all of life?;-)

Any questions, give me a shout!

La Pine voters may decide this fall on new rules to regulate data centers

I've been working on this one off and on for over a week, and since things took awhile ... it happens to hit the night the backers put out their release, launched their website/Facebook page, etc. Oh well, the old UPI slogan was: "Get it First, but First Get it Right." Hope you find it interesting.

Wow. I have never read something on AI that is this insightful

https://medium.com/@troybreiland/for-the-ai-boom-to-fully-pay-off-somebody-has-to-pay-4d9d9a35e59a

See if you agree! I have highlighted and responded to several lines, as well as commented on his views and thoughts. Medium has its own algorithm that puts a LOT of AI articles in front of me. But Troy is a great writer, on this and other topics. Highly recommended!

Bending Spoons files for IPO (from Axios)

(Note no mention of Evernote)

Bending Spoons, an Italian holding company that buys and seeks to revitalize legacy tech brands, filed yesterday for a U.S. IPO that could fetch around a $20 billion valuation.

Why it matters: This would be a return to the public markets for AOL, Eventbrite and Vimeo, all now owned by Bending Spoons.

How it works: Bending Spoons buys tech assets with large user bases and invests in their turnaround with technology improvements.

  • It bought AOL, for example, from Apollo Global Management last year in a deal valued at roughly $1.5 billion.
  • The company tends to sit on its investments long term after acquiring them.

🔭 Zoom out: The company has looked to expand its cap table in recent months to help it quickly secure debt when time-sensitive deal opportunities arise.

  • Last year, it raised $710 million in equity at an $11 billion pre-money valuation.
  • The deal included $270 million in primary capital that can be used to make acquisitions, Bending Spoons CEO Luca Ferrari told Axios at the time.

The Curious Bendite: Just when was Bend’s last bank robbery, anyway?

Hi all! So, as a semi-retired life-long reporter, I'm not about to shelve my innate curiosity about interesting people and issues, so I will be doing some occasional writing in that middle ground between crime, crashes and fires and soft stories that are nice but ... anyway, if you like it, please give it a few 'claps' below the headline - and just maybe follow me! .

On a split vote, Oregon Parole Board denies release of Adam Thomas, last of the ‘Redmond 5’ in prison

Hi all. So, Friday was my last official day with KTVZ, after 21 years, primarily to care full-time for my wife in her battle with cancer. Got a nice, big framed card with wonderful notes, etc. I posted about it on my Facebook page.

Then, just one day later, a big story tip (on a terrible crime I've covered since it happened in 2001) dropped into my lap. I'd already been on FT paid leave for a month-plus, so after wrestling with how to proceed, I figured "write the darn thing," keep my news-writing muscles working.

I did share the info and then the link with my former employer, and they posted it with my name, probably confusing some folks - but what the heck, call me a "free agent";-)

I still feel like I'm "part of the family," and want us to be first. So ... here's where/how I published it, on Medium. My other writing there is mostly fun bloggy stuff, but this is definitely the opposite.

Still feeling my way forward, toward and into the New Chapter of Quasi-Semi-Pretirement. But Deb comes first... absolutely.

Local scam surge (please don't blame/shame the victims!)

Posted by Bend PD yesterday, with some very sad local real-life examples. I read somewhere once that we regress to our child-like naivete and trust as we get older. So skip the blame/shame, OK? Instead, look for ways to protect YOUR older friends/loved ones from going down some very costly rabbit holes.

New to Goose, grateful for their great music...

And this great subreddit. I belong to so many for singers/bands, and the vibe is usually much the same - folks talking about the latest tour dates, of course debates over which was the best music, etc. There's something rather comforting in the predictability of that. I wish I'd heard them earlier on the radio, which got me here and to music that really speaks to me.

Is this the best place to get to know fellow moderators, or is there a better sub or just join a lot of Subs?

What if you don't have a question you just want to find out what brought people to playing this role and other kind of curious questions that don't necessarily go down the rabbit hole of tips and problems Etc.

Can this super platform add built-in forums?

I am new to Beehiiv and totally amamazed at how robust the platform is and how much one can learn about it without even having to provide an email and get on that train, how many features are available in the free version to try out Etc.

But as a guy who was a beta tester for America Online - yeah, 'm that old- I do wish there was the ability to create an old fashioned or modern forum on whatever the topic is.

I did ask Perplexity about that and or whether or not there is good current forum software. The answer to that and follow questions could be summed up as: Sort of, but not quite.

I'm actually hoping to create a spot where regular people who are not totally against or for AI can talk about the latest developments, their use cases, Etc. Not just in the comment thread on any posting that folks would have to find Etc

I can tell you can bolt just about anything onto a Beehiv use, but there's so much great native stuff built in now, from podcasts to you name it, I just sort of wish this great way of having a community discussion spot also was built in as an option for those seeking it. Hey, a guy can dream right?

Has anyone on here gone down that particular rabbit hole and made something work without a whole lot of developer-brained customization? I'm not sure how alone I am in seeing that as a fruitful niche, but I figure it never hurts to ask!

And here's a little PS: could Beehiiv add a searchable Discover directory of the publications that is searchable by topic, geography, sortable such as biggest, newest to oldest, etc. It could even list how many active members, contacts, if it is free or has paid tiers, a nice little thumbnail and summary, etc.
