Ring and dress store suggestions for pinup/vintage or goth style?

I’m starting to look for an engagement ring, which will also be my wedding ring as I only want to wear one, and will be looking for a wedding dress shortly after I find the engagement ring.

My aesthetic leans towards pinup style with a little bit of goth and punk mixed in. I already have Adornment and Theory on my list. Are there any other ring stores I should check out? I always wanted an engagement ring from Asari Garden and am so sad they’re closed.

I have no idea where to look for dresses! Much like with Asari Garden, my dream store (Dame in Evanston) is long closed. Looking for something very old Hollywood that I can dance in. I’m not looking for

Favorite strawberry ice cream with chunks of strawberry?

I love strawberry ice cream with big chunks of strawberry (and extra points for a bright pink base).

I’ve tried Tillamook and Aldens. Both are a little light on strawberries and flavor. Very much don’t like Breyers or Edys.

What are your favorites that can be bought in or shipped to Chicago?

Milwaukee Ticket Supply Mystery

I didn’t grab a ticket for the Milwaukee show in the general on sale and just started looking for one on the secondary market. I’m shocked by how few are available. There’s 12 on Ticketmaster and about 25 on other resale sites. They’re all pretty expensive too.

Just from glancing through ticket prices/availability in other Midwest cities, Milwaukee seems to be quite an outlier. Is the venue somehow able to restrict reselling in a way others can’t? Is Milwaukee a secret EWF stronghold and no one is selling their tickets?

I’m thrilled if this means all the tickets are in the hands of actual fans even if I’m a little selfishly bummed that I might have to skip this one.

Opinions on Carpet Cleaning Group vs SN Cleaning?

I need to have some large rugs and upholstery cleaned and after getting quotes from a few companies I think I’ve narrowed it down to Carpet Cleaning Group and SN Cleaning.

Carpet Cleaning Group is significantly more expensive but they clean the rugs off site which I’ve heard makes for a better cleaning.

They have also been extremely pushy about booking an appointment. I sent an email yesterday afternoon asking for a quote and they’ve called me 4 times (including after I told them I wouldn’t be able to take a phone call).

SN has good reviews and is a lot less expensive but cleans the rugs on site.

Any good/bad recent experiences with either? Also open to other recommendations but I’ve already ruled out Green Clean (too many bad reviews).

How to get an actual human to review a reported listing?

My partner is a poster artist and there are a lot of counterfeit copies of his - and his friends’ - work on eBay. Some accounts consist solely of stolen poster art. I’ve been filing reports with proof that the items are counterfeit and IP infringement. The response I get is that the report will be reviewed by AI.

And it’s clear AI is reviewing them because some are determined to be authentic even though they are very obviously fake.

To get through to an agent on the phone or on the chat feature you have to choose from a list of buying or selling problems. This is neither.

How do I get this problem in front of an actual person?

Exterminator recommendation for pantry moth problem?

I’ve been dealing with pantry moths for quite a while. They aren’t in my pantry though. They’re in my bedroom and office which feels a little alarming.

I’ve tried getting rid of them myself with no success. I’ve started reaching out to exterminators and am learning that many don’t deal with moths.

Has anyone else had this problem handled by professionals?

Insight for visitors on different parts of Eugene?

My boyfriend and I are visiting Eugene this summer and will be staying in an Air B n B. We found several in our budget and while trying to choose one I realized I don’t have a sense of the different areas.

I did some Googling but thought hearing from locals would probably be best for getting an idea of what things are really like (Does warehouse district mean really isolated? Does suburban mean just houses and strip malls?).

The places we’re most interested in gave these location descriptors:

- SW Hills

- South Hills near the university (maybe this is the same as “SW Hills”?)

- A mile from the Ridgeline System

- Jefferson-Westside neighborhood

We don’t have any activities planned yet but are interested in easy hikes, swimming, art, wineries and vegan food. It’d be great to stay somewhere that’s an easy drive or walk to some of the things we’re interested in.

Recommendation for a cleaning service for a (very) deep clean?

I’ve been dealing with a bathroom repair/remodel situation since October and it’s finally going to be done next week! Not having a totally usable bathroom meant a lot of stuff was stored in other rooms. I’ve cleaned the best I could but my place has still felt pretty grimy/chaotic, especially over the last few months.

I want to celebrate by getting my place super deep cleaned. One of the reasons the work took so long was dealing with an unethical contractor company that did terrible work. It’s been very stressful.

I really, really, really don’t want to have a stressful or disappointing experience getting my place cleaned so I’m seeking recommendations for a stress free experience that will leave my place sparkling clean.

(Trash Friends tends to get recommended for cleaning + mental health type projects but their reviews make them a no for me…..so anyone else but them, please!)

Seeking recommendations for vegan dining options and unusual activities

My boyfriend and I are heading to Door County next week and I’m looking for recommendations of restaurants with vegan options.

Specifically looking for recommendations of breakfast spots, places for a quick lunch and romantic vibes dinner.

Also looking for attraction/activity suggestions. We’re into spooky or unusual things, music and books. We’re already signed up for the ghost trolley tour and a tour at the bird sanctuary.

Thank you!

Green tile opinions/recommendations?

I’m putting horizontal green tile on a 9 x 3 section of wall behind my bath/shower combo. I’ve included a picture of the wall to give an idea of the space but think it’s important to note that the wall and waterproofing are being redone.

The surrounding walls will be light/medium pink.

I originally chose a beveled subway tile (photo 2). It was set wrong twice so it’s mostly gone. I hired a new contractor and think I want to buy a different tile.

Photos 3 and 4 are the tiles I’m considering. I love the colors but am a little concerned about the waviness of the tile.

Would love opinions/thoughts on the waviness and any recommendations of other green tile!

Hotels nearish the Greek Theater and/or opinions on Hollywood hotels?

My boyfriend and I are visiting LA in August for a show at the Greek. It doesn’t seem like there’s many hotels walking distance from there. We’ll have a car but parking seems expensive so we’ll probably take an Uber, which means I’m looking for something nearish.

I found a lot of incredible looking hotels in Santa Monica and Venice Beach but that just seems too far.

Hollywood seems like the closest neighborhood with a lot of hotels. I stayed at the Loews in 2022 and didn’t like the strip mall vibes of the area. Has that changed at all? Are these hotels in a different/better part of Hollywood? Any general opinions on these spots?

Cara

The Aster

Hotel Per La

The LINE LA (not Hollywood but I get a discount so I’m considering it)

Gold Diggers

The Prospect

Pail House

Hoxton

Also very open to suggestions of other spots. We prefer boutique and/or unique hotels and love a pool, great bathtub and/or in room record player. We’re in our 40s and not big party people. Trying to keep it under 400 a night.

Is there a checking account with benefits not tied to direct deposit?

I’ve had the same checking account for about 15 years. It’s a basic Chase account it’s fine.

I’m starting student loan payments again after being stuck in the SAVE forbearance mess and want to open an account just for that. It’s beneficial to have automatic debit but in 2024 an admin error led to the government essentially cleaning out my checking account and it took a month to get my money back. My plan is to put a few months of payments in at a time and replenish as needed.

I’ve been doing some research on checking accounts that come with perks but they all seem tied to direct deposit, which I won’t be doing. Are there any that provide benefits not tied to that?

I’m in renovation hell. Had water damage in my bathroom, insurance company pushed us to use Servpro to put everything back together. They took out my floor and shower/tub a month ago and it’s been a clown show ever since. I’m working on ending the contract and am looking for a new contractor.

I miss showering in my own house.

I have asked friends and family for recommendations. I posted on my local Facebook group. I’ve contacted 17 contractors. I can’t get a response. I know it’s a relatively small job and that coming in to a project started by another company isn’t ideal.

But I just can’t accept the idea that there’s no company out there that can take this on and do a great job with it.

I’m hoping someone will read this who also had a job started and done wrong by another company and has a great recommendation for a contractor who was willing to fix it. I can’t live with my bathtub in my entryway forever.

I’m (hopefully) having tile set on a 9x3 section of wall behind my shower/tub combo. I had bad luck with the first contractor and the project is paused while I look for a new one.

I want green subway tile and originally bought 3 x 6 beveled tile from the Tile Shop. Almost all of that tile was ruined in the subcontractor’s two attempts at setting it.

Now that I have to buy new tile I’m rethinking my original choice. I still want small green subway tile but don’t want the bevel.

I’ve read a lot of posts on the tile subreddit advising against using tile from the big box stores. I’m having trouble finding small “mom and pop” tile stores in Chicago. It seems like it’s either big box stores or extremely high end stores.

I found a tile at Home Depot that I think could work. Link is in the comments since a link in the post seems to trigger the Reddit filters.

Is it always a bad idea to buy from these stores or could this tile end up being ok?

Also feeling a little worried about the floor tile I bought at Floor and Decor. It’s returnable. If anyone has suggestions of something similar that’s better quality I’m open to hearing them! Link is also in the comments.

I’m trying to post a question about tile selection on the tile and bathroom remodeling subreddits. Both posts were removed by “Reddit filters”.

I can’t figure out what could be so offensive in a post about tile. Is there a list somewhere of what the filters are looking for or a way to challenge the removal?

My partner and I have been talking about getting engaged so I’m starting to look for rings. I lean toward goth/alt or pinup/vintage style jewelry. A description of a ring I liked online was “something the Corpse Bride would wear.”

I’m nervous about buying online because there’s no way to know how it will look! I’m middle aged with middle aged skin, so it will probably take trying on a few to find one that looks good on my finger.

I’m definitely going to look at Catbird. Any other suggestions for stores in or around Chicago? Budget is around 1500.

I’m not a stacked ring person so I’ll be wearing my engagement ring as my wedding ring….so it’s gotta be special!
