Porky Pig reading the Pledge of Allegiance in 1939... notice anything missing?

(No "Under God.") This is from a WB Merrie Melodies short called "Old Glory," in which Uncle Sam teaches Porky Pig American History. I thought Bulwarkers might like to see it.

I'm Christian myself, but as someone who is pro-separation of Church and State and anti-Christian nationalism, I don't think adding "Under God" to the pledge in 1954 helped us a bit.

Happy Independence Day.

Is It Possible Bob Tours as a Joke?

I’ve seen him live recently and in the 2010s. Neither show would be acceptable by any other artist in terms of quality or in seeming to not care. I love the man and his music but it made me wonder if the whole tour is at this point a joke on the audience to see how bad he can make it while still having fans falling down to say it was actually good.

And if I could spend an hour with a Beatles member, what would they do? What would I ask them?

In my case, I'd like to spend that hour with John and ask him about his life. What he thinks about his life. What has happened since he left this world, and if he regrets the harm he caused. And what he wanted to achieve with each of his solo albums.

Sally's Artisan Bread Recipe (Rank beginner)

My first time! I made 4 loaves. Mine ended up a little undercooked, so stuck everything in for an extra 8 mins or so which firmed it up. Had a little more success with the thin "disposable" (not disposable to me) aluminum pan. (had sticking issues with the more durable pan).

I did forget to score mine, so I'm hypothesizing that that might be why it took longer to cook.

I'm so excited to abandon crappy and expensive store-bought bread! Link to recipe.

Into My Veins

Watching someone actually stand up to this idiot is so f*ing hot. (I know I know, she's problematic in other ways but damn, more of this please, from literally anyone).

Never ceases to amaze me how much Paul changed in just 84 years. It's like 2 different people. What are your thoughts?

Conservative opinions of Trump's MOU (and Obama comparisons)

From what I've seen overall, conservatives are not happy with Trump's MOU. For instance Erick Erickson's pinned tweet is about how much this deal sucks. Many of them will make comparisons to Obama, some calling it "JCPOA 2". But those comparisons are not apt. Iran never tried the strait-closing thing or charging fees on the strait on his watch. Obama brought in several other nations to help negotiate and enforce his deal, and Obama didn't have to murder school children in order to get Iran to the table.

Book recommendation to help you celebrate the USA's 250th

I loved Ed Asner, enjoyed this book and thought it would be timely for the USA's 250th. As I was cutting and pasting a synopisis from the publisher I realized: It's out of date. It's a book written by a couple of crusty old liberals about why Conservatives are wrong about the Constitution. However, Conservatives don't attempt use the constitution to defend their actions anymore, so it's kind of moot.

Russell Vought infamously said we are in a "post-constitutional" state. Meaning. "Conservatives" are not even pretending to conserve anything anymore, including the Constitution.

As Trumpers enter more fully into "burn it down" mode, let us conserve, preserve and protect the Constitution and truly be a Bulwark for future generations.

"In 'an unabashedly biased, deeply researched book' (SF Gate), Ed Asner—the actor who starred as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show—reclaims the Constitution from the right-wingers who think that they and only they know how to interpret it.

Ed Asner, a self-proclaimed dauntless Democrat from the old days, figured that if the right-wing wackos are wrong about voter fraud, Obama’s death panels, and climate change, they are probably just as wrong about what the Constitution says. There’s no way that two hundred-plus years later, the right-wing ideologues know how to interpret the Constitution. On their way home from Philadelphia the people who wrote it couldn’t agree on what it meant. What was the president’s job? Who knew? All they knew was that the president was going to be George Washington and as long as he was in charge, that was good enough. When Hamilton wanted to start a national bank, Madison told him that it was unconstitutional. Both men had been in the room when the Constitution was written. And now today there are politicians and judges who claim that they know the original meaning of the Constitution. Are you kidding?

In The Grouchy Historian, Ed Asner leads the charge for liberals to reclaim the Constitution from the right-wingers who use it as their justification for doing whatever terrible thing they want to do, which is usually to comfort the comfortable and afflict the afflicted. It’s about time someone gave them hell and explained that progressives can read, too."

Report: Rubio and Hegseth threatened with dismissal.

No idea if this is true but it is slightly bizarre that Rubio has been awol and Vance has been everywhere.

Also odd that no one knows what is in the MOU. It's this allegedly amazing deal... that no one is allowed to see for... reasons.

Black Bean Hummus

This isn't really hummus but it's a delicious and healthy protein:

Put black beans, fresh garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and red pepper flakes in food processor. Puree.

I eat it with a spoon, put it on bread, or use it as a veggie dip.

How would you rebut the particular arguments used in this claim that Romans 5:18 does not support universalism?

Hi Friends, i’m interested to know how you would rebut this argument that Romans 5:18 does not support universalism. I personally think Romans 5:18 makes a strong case for Universalism, but I am not particularly confident in my ability to rebut the (imo) unusual claims made by the author. What do you think?

Sam Stein for the Pocket Hose

I frigging love Sam Stein's Pocket Hose ad reads. They give me life. All other ad reads are strictly ok. Sam for "Calm" (sorry, not a good fit -- Sam is a lot of things but he's not Calm.) Sam for Aura frames -- zzzz. But Sam Stein for Pocket Hose! Holy shit sign me up. I want to buy 10 million bullet-proof hoses and put them in my pocket and watch them expand. All other pursuits fade into a distant memory. I have one singular purpose, and it's Pocket Hose. And Sam helps me not forget that.
