[Question] Does my landlord have to service my refrigerator?

We moved into our rent control apartment in 2020 and signed an addendum to our lease agreeing that the refrigerator left in the apartment and was our responsibility. My interpretation of the new law AB 628 is that the landlord is now responsible for servicing our refrigerator. The building management has tried to Stonewall me and says they are currently reviewing the law. Does anyone have experience here? Our fridge broke yesterday and it’s terrible, we need to get it fixed, and I believe it is their responsibility.

UPDATE: I had to strong arm them a bit but they “consulted legal, and it is ambiguous, so we’re just buying you a new one.” It will be delivered next week and the old one even started working again—the delivery guys will haul it away—and my frozen breastmilk stash survived. Win-win-win, thanks everyone.

Huge line at TJ’s this morning—why?

There was a line of people wrapped around the block at the Trader Joe’s near Plummer Park this morning. What were they there for? Also a hovering news chopper.

What color is my hair?

After a lifetime of dyeing and lightening my hair, including 12 years of bleaching, I have spent the last 4 years letting my hair grow back in to its natural color. I like it! But I don’t know what to call it. These pictures were taken in direct sunlight. What color is my hair? If helpful, as a child I had white blonde hair until I was about ten.

Go-To Thai Delivery to replace Luv2Eat

I used to be a devoted Luv2Eat patron, for years and years, but the last few times I ate there it was just gross. Greasy, poorly seasoned, leftovers I wanted to toss instead of savor. In my current financial situation, ordering in/eating out is a special treat and it’s the worst to spend a bunch of money on food you actively dislike. I am seeking a new go-to Thai place for dine-in and pickup or delivery. I live in East Weho. I am an omnivore but my partner and kids are vegetarians—not picky about fish sauce, though, just no meat. Our order would normally be pad thai with tofu, green curry, red curry, maybe fried tofu as an appetizer, and a chicken dish for me. Give me your favorite recs!

Where/how can I learn to lift weights in/near West Hollywood?

Give me your best recs for where I can learn to lift and do strength training that is proximate to West Hollywood. I am a new mom in my 40s and I really want to get strong--my exercise regimen is pilates, yoga, and swimming and I know weights are necessary and also seem fun. But I have no idea where to start and I know I need instruction. It would be great if it was less than $300/month and not too far from WeHo. I am an ED survivor and can't work out anywhere that I will be weighed, instructors will fixate on weight loss or speak negatively about my body or anybody else's. Thanks!

Help: toddler and newborn

My family recently welcomed our second child. He was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition when I was 32 weeks pregnant, I underwent a fetal surgery, and he spent three weeks in the NICU after delivery. To say we are traumatized is an understatement. We live far from family in a two bedroom apartment with no outdoor space that is not air-conditioned in a hot climate. We received a wonderful amount of support from friends and family who traveled to be with us in our time of great need. However, things have settled down now, and we are adjusting to life as a family of four.

I was anticipating my older child, who will turn four in August, having trouble adjusting to being a big brother. He loves his little brother. But he has become incredibly difficult when we are all home together. If I am feeding the baby, he is up in my face, grabbing the baby, giving me panic attacks that he will hurt him. I have to shout at him to get him to back off. We try to involve him by having him pick out clothes for the baby, holding the baby with supervision, playing near the baby, but it’s like he gets too excited and just starts kicking and jumping around in a way that is not safe.

He also has become defiant in in a way that he never was before. He has always been a sweet kid, articulate, and imaginative ahead of his years, and I know he is grieving being a family of just three. To be honest, I am too, although I love my new baby so much. I’m just so tired of the dynamic of correcting him until I’m shouting at him. I never felt I had to raise my voice at him before.

He has no screen time, we strongly limit sugar, and I take him to a special art class on Sunday morning so that we can spend hours of uninterrupted time together. My husband and I truly think that we pay more attention to hm than we did before the second was born. I’ve read some posts on the subject, but many of them seem oddly fixated on smaller age gaps than the one that we have, or don’t account for how to handle the mental grind of a kid who is always yelling at you and defying you. I know his sweet and lovely self is still in there. If I’m not agitated, I can endure and take deep breaths, but it’s like water torture over the course of hours of just being shouted at and antagonized while trying to hang out.

Any tips, advice, support, encouragement welcomed! thank you!

Missing Continued Benefits Form not available on website and deadline is in 3 days

My original end of SDI for postpartum was 5/25, but my doctor extended my period of SDI to 9/1, and her office submitted the supplementary form on 6/8. Since then I see the "Certification Needed" message connected to my claim, but the Cert for Continued Benefits (DE 2500A) form has not been made available in my inbox or in Available Forms. I was last paid 5/29 so it has been over 14 days since my last payment.

I can't get through on the phone, so yesterday I went in and waited for 3 hours at the SDI office. They did not see me before they closed but an employee came out, took my info, and said she would call me if I needed to do anything. From reading here it seems like maybe it will be handled but I am nervous because the deadline for certification is 6/19 which is Friday. Any ideas? How can I make sure I don't lose benefits?

Update: I used EDDCaller and it got me a callback after 2139 attempts. The SDI representative was able to resolve the issue and issue my payment immediately. Thanks for the advice to use this service, best $13 I ever spent.

How did your kids learn to swim in LA?

What swim lessons, classes, training for toddlers do you recommend? We’re in Weho but will travel!

My kid will be four this summer and is not the strong swimmer I wish he was. He has been attending a preschool where they do swim lessons for two years, but at their recent swim show he was among the weakest swimmers. He definitely has some anxiety and fear of the water—won’t get close to the ocean when we are at the beach. I think he needs private lessons and/or a weekend Boot Camp type situation. I was on swim team growing up and it’s important to me for safety reasons that he be unafraid of the water and competent at swimming. (Prior to swim team, I learned how to swim by spending a lot of time in the pool on vacations with my dad, also a great swimmer, but sadly I do not have the ability to take the number of vacations or spend as many hours in the pool with my child as I enjoyed in my own childhood.)

Please give me your recommendations for helping a kid become water safe in relatively short order. We have done group swim lessons at our public pool here and there but we now have a newborn which makes it hard to be consistent and I think he needs more than half an hour every few weeks. I know there are specialized lessons for six weeks or so that claim to make your kid drowning proof, but most of them cost around $1500 and often require you to have your own pool. That’s out of my budget and I don’t even have a backyard. But I am willing to throw some money at the problem and make a serious time commitment to help my kid develop this important skill. Thank you!
