Please advise re: sewer flies in my office

I have these flies (not my photo) in my office, which was recently renovated. It’s not just my unit because my colleagues have also seen them. They seem to be concentrated at my end, which is nowhere near a drain or bathroom, and I’ve never seen any in the kitchen.

The trash gets taken out every day and a lot of people work from home, so there’s just not a whole lot here. The building was renovated last year, so this is the first spring/summer that we’ve had them, and I just started seeing them around when the AC might have switched on, so I’ve suspected they could be from the HVAC (either the building vents or the wall units in some of the offices) but building maintenance has been by a few times and they say there’s no condensation, it just drains. Maintenance is blaming it on office plants, which I really really doubt - I have never known this type of fly to breed in plants. Can anyone advise??

Does anyone here ever worry about talking to clients via interpreter?

I didn’t really start thinking about this until the ICE stuff ramped up and I’m probably being paranoid. I know they’re supposed to keep things confidential and I’ve heard good ones are trained to “forget” things they hear. But like…I don’t know who that person is, at all. It just stresses me out. I strongly prefer using in-house interpreters or bilingual colleagues if at all possible (I’ve got a Spanish-speaking paralegal who is an absolute godsend). Do other people think about this or am I just being crazy?

EDIT I should clarify! I’m not talking about court interpreters. I’m talking more about the language line interpreters we use for attorney-client calls.

Tim: Seattle is lovely in September!

Was listening to this week’s TNL and /u/AmoryBlaine I wanted to put your mind at ease, September is generally a *beautiful* month in Seattle! Honestly kind of a best-kept secret, highs should be in the 60s or so and it’s usually still clear - if you’re lucky you might even hit the second summer. The rain doesn’t usually start until sometime in October. (Honestly, the biggest thing to worry about is a smoky season, so cross your fingers on that.)

You’ll have a great time!

Give me your best podcast zone-out games

I’m looking for games where I can completely turn off my brain and listen to a podcast. Some of my favorites have been:

PWS 1&2 (the GOAT)
Crime Scene Cleaner
House Builder 1&2 (but I only do jobs)
Unpacking
All of the “An X full of cats” games
A Little to the Left
Happy Color on my phone
Two Point Museum

Right now I’m playing Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library, which is scratching the same itch. Obviously I’m really drawing to cleaning/organizing games. What else should I try?

Illustrated fairy/folktale collection for kids

I’ve got a 5yo who really likes fairy tales. We have one of those 5 Minute Stories books but it’s honestly just kind of strange and I’d like something better. I was thinking of just getting an illustrated edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales or something, but I’d prefer something that collects stories from around the world. Any suggestions? He’s not reading yet, so this would be for reading aloud.

I realize this is a lot of reading but like…what the fuck?

What is this doing in my preschooler’s 5 Minute Stories book? It’s like, The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea, Chicken Little, The Little Tree Who Withered in an Attic and Burned Alive Because He Was Ungrateful.

ETA I had no idea this was a HCA story! I read a ton of fairy tales as a kid and definitely knew the old stories got dark but I somehow never read this one. It’s just so bleak in a way that a lot of the other darker versions aren’t.

Why is the Wizard doing…any of what he’s doing?

So I get that this is an allegory for fascism. It’s been probably 20 years since I read the book, and I remember it being MUCH more political than the show.

The “unite the people by giving them someone to hate” is obviously textbook fascism and it makes sense in theory, but the musical makes it seem like the persecution of animals starts completely out of the blue, in a nation that seems more or less utopian, with the wizard already having already fully consolidated what appears to be absolute power and the universal adoration of his people. There doesn’t seem to be any discontent or unrest or factionalism. He’s already basically god-emperor of Oz. So what’s he doing? Why upset the apple cart (and stir up a resistance movement) by having goons drag respected professors out of class mid-lecture? I walked away from WFG with this overwhelming feeling of like…why did any of this happen?

Just saw For Good and something is bugging me

>!Why did Elphaba leave Fiyero instead of just…scooping him up and flying away? Or having the monkeys do it? Or having the monkeys dove-bomb the guards if they grab him first??!<

>!Like, I’m kind of joking, but I’m kind of not. We know that two monkeys can lift a person very easily. Presumably Elphaba had just carried Fiyero to her hideout on her broom (we don’t see it, but I don’t know how else he would have gotten there).!<

>!For some reason this didn’t bother me when I saw the stage show, maybe because it’s less visually obvious but like…they’re all just flying around! No one else can fly! Just get like 10 feet off the ground and you’re fine!! It’s not like there’s a struggle going on that would make it hard to grab him, they’re all just standing there. Please make this make sense so it stops bugging me so much, lol!<

Just finished and adored the Sarantine Mosaic, but… [SPOILERS]

>!…the coincidence of Lecanus Daleinus having a bird identical to the ones that Zoticus made is really hard for me to get my head around. The book leads us to believe that Zoticus is the *only* one who can make these, and his all have the same voice. Lecanus’s has a different voice, so I assume Zoticus didn’t make it (plus I think it said he’s only ever given two away). So someone else harnessed the same power, down to a visually identical vessel for the soul, and…what? Gave it to the Deleinus family sometime before the patriarch was killed, and Lecanus was somehow able to take it to the island with him? Or maybe someone got it to him somehow after he was blinded to help him “see”? It’s not even clear to me how it would have helped him with the murder plot, except knowing that it was Alixana visiting him instead of Styliane, but surely he’d have known that anyway once they were hatching the plan. I was desperately hoping to get some more information when Crispin goes back to the island at the end, but no. Please help me understand this as something more than basically a deus ex machina for Crispin to uncover the plot!!<

>!Also, why did Zoticus tell Crispin to look up Rustem? Their paths barely crossed in the second book.!<

Everyone in the comments trying to figure out what’s wrong with a 9yo boy (with a pool!) “topless”

Whenever anyone pointed out that this sounds pretty normal, she responded “but it’s not family” I guess because it’s his stepdad instead of his real dad?? She also kept insisting that there were other photos that were also red flags but these were the most you disturbing…a few people suggested she go with her kid and she said she didn’t even want to be around adults who would do something like this.

Do hoyas un-revert?

I mean I guess they must somehow or we wouldn’t end up with variegated plants, but this is the cutting I bought vs the plant that’s growing in my home. Why is it putting out so many different colors now?
