Best tall person, free-standing tents for Australians?

Absolutely love my Lanshan 2 Pro but I’m doing the GRR2 and will need a free standing one.

I’ve managed to squeeze the Lanshan in some crazy places but I think I finally need to sensibly get a free-standing one for this trail.

Been out of the research game for a while and wondering what the picks are these days?

Sydney in 3 weeks. Is 3:45 realistic?

36M. First marathon.

Final long run done yesterday. Hard but felt good.

Question marks on whether this final race simulation long run structure was hard enough… I know.

I paid for a terrible program that I had to abandon mid block. I then had a consultation with a coach who gave me 34km with 2x6km at MP with 2km easy float.

My thoughts are 3:45 is ambitious but possible. I should go for it but be happy with sub 4 which is probably more likely.

Garmin predicts 3:39. Runalyze 3:38. Strava 4:15 or something…

Max HR 184 according to Garmin but have never tested this and haven’t pushed it anywhere near this during this block.

Thoughts? Any other info that would be useful?

Taper success/miracle stories?

Training for my first marathon, so not sure what to expect during the taper.

I’ve put together a pretty decent block. Followed a plan and slowly built to more mileage than I’ve ever done. I will peak at 80km next week and then taper.

However… I feel like I haven’t improved at all.

Heart rate and pace both haven’t really improved since week 1. Garmin VO2max has barely moved.

I’ve heard you have to trust the process. Trust that the carrot is growing and you can’t dig it up to check…

I’m hoping I’m just carrying a bucketload of cumulative fatigue and the taper will release the coiled spring on race day.

But I’m full of doubt and feel like I may have trained wrong or just be shit at running.

Long run distance 2 weeks out?

My program has 28km with 3x4km at MP with 1km easy floats in between.

(This is following a peak week of 34km with 12km at MP)

Goal of 3:45, first marathon, 36M.

Is this too much 14 days out?

Is this sign not a complete waste of space?

If it didn’t have the “9am - 6pm” part then I get it because it stops you just dumping your car there for weeks.

But I don’t otherwise see what it achieves?

u/dontletmeautism — 24 days ago

Which week would you choose?

Monday: 10km easy.

Tuesday: Rest day

Wednesday: Speed session

Thursday: 11km easy

AITA for getting frustrated at a dog owner?

Was running through an off leash area today that I run multiple times a week and have never had an issue.

I generally like dogs and often pat and say hello.

Today a dog ran up to me. I smiled at it and said hello. But it started growling, snarling, barking and jumping at me.

I had to stop running and look around for the owner. I’m training for a marathon and I’m quite injury prone and felt very unsteady having a dog running around my feet, jumping at me and maybe trying to bite me. Bit scary tbh.

The owner comes up and apologises and tries to grab the dog but it keeps running away. It runs over to a second owner who for some reason doesn’t grab it.

I start running again and the dog chases me again and starts barking and snarling again forcing me to stop and stand still.

I feel helpless and frustrated and lash out with a “FFS can you just grab it, I’m trying to run”

What does your final long run dress-rehearsal look like?

And what is your time?

Mine is:

34km Total with

14km Easy

6km MP

2km Easy

6km MP

6km Easy

For a goal of 3:45 finish.

Does this seem reasonable or not aggressive enough?

6 weeks to go. 3:45 realistic? (First marathon)

Or should I adjust my plan (and expectations) for the remainder of this peak?

35 year old male.

Heart rate tends to sit quite low.

u/dontletmeautism — 1 month ago

Why is Spa being reduced to every second year?

Serious question.

What does it come down to and who makes the decisions?

Is it money? Power? Corruption?

Danger?

Is it the drivers?

Just trying to understand.

And is there anything fans can do about it?

Which ones you got for your first marathon?

Nike Alphafly 3 vs. Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4

Firstly, I’m aware I’m not fast enough for either with a 3:30-3:45 finish.

But there are only a handful of shoes I can wear as they need to be stiff, rockered, not too soft and have a wide toebox. For an arthritic big toe.

Was set on the Nikes after a lot of research on midpack finishers. But for some weird reason, I can feel my big toe lightly touch the end at pace and worried what that will do over 42km.

They also just feel like springs that are a bit wobbly and now that my long runs are over 30km (in SB2) I can see why people say to just choose comfort.

I also just feel like a knobhead wearing them. People legitimately point them out to their friends as I run by. So when warming up and cooling down, I get self conscious.

So my lack of self control won and I bought the Pumas on sale. They feel more stable but less bouncy. Fit is better despite some creasing up front.

Do I play it safe and wear the Pumas, or go for bounce?

I have 7 weeks to decide so will take them both on long runs. Not a bad dilemma to have.

6’4, 83kg, 173 cadence, midfoot striker.

Which is more stable: Nike Alphafly 3 or Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4?

RunRepeat says the Alphafly wins but everything else I’m reading says the opposite.

Deciding on a marathon shoe.

Bought the Alphafly but after recent 30km runs in other shoes, I’m now seeing why people prioritise comfort and stability over this distance.

Thinnest race day sock recommendations?

Hopefully okay to ask about socks :)

I’m between sizes with my race day shoe. I’m going to go with the smaller ones and tape my toes.

Looking for thin sock recommendations to give me as much space as possible.

Nike Alphafly 3 sizing - Normal to feel the upper of the toebox when running?

Usually a 12. Tried both 12 and 12.5 on in store. 12.5 seemed a bit sloppy. 12 felt good in store and the guy said to go with the 12.

Ran for the first time in them yesterday.

Might have been a lockdown issue because I only felt it on my right and not my left. But just felt a tiny bit of the upper when actually running.

Worried what this will mean over the marathon distance. It doesn’t seem like it will be an issue because it’s hardly any pressure. But just a paranoid with what people say about black toes and blisters.

I will spare you another photo with the thumb. But when sitting i do have a thumb. When standing, maybe a pinky.

Didn’t expect any issues and a bit gutted now that I can’t return them.

Should I change my plan in week 7 of 15?

I have just learnt that after 2.5 hours, aerobic returns dry up significantly. Meaning all you are doing is increasing injury risk and fatigue for minimal benefit.

Looking ahead, the plan I chose goes right up to 37km long run. This is a mix of Easy and MP and will total about 3:45.

I’m pretty gutted because I have a little niggle in my knee. My long runs are already 32km and I suspect it’s because my long runs built too quickly. Full of regret.

I’m tempted to change plans which means my long runs would drop back a bit and build to a maximum of 33km. Which may give my knee some breathing time.

So… do you cap your long runs at 32/33km like most plans do? Or do you train your mind and body to suffer and spend longer out there?

Question about my 2012 Volkswagen Polo 77TSI

When in a reasonably high gear accelerating up a hill, I get a sudden jolt at around 1800RPM.

(It may also happen on flats - hills are just when I’ve noticed it. It probably has more to do with the gear and revs and speed than the incline)

This is new and is some sort of malfunction.

Does anyone know what this is?

Pes Anserine Irritation

So I have a tiny little niggle and wondering if others have experienced similar. Does it get worse or eventually go away?

Long run Saturday. Fine.

Sunday rest.

Monday easy run. Fine during but notice minor pain after. Gym that night seems to help it.

Tuesday rest.

Wednesday I get through my tempo session with no pain and think that’s the end of it.

Thursday easy run. Flares up during the run.

It’s now Friday and seems to have settled again but nervous with my next long run coming up.

How do you break in your race day shoes?

Break in might be the wrong term but how do you get used to them and make sure they work for you if it’s something you’ve never worn?

Suppose your easy pace is 6:00/km and your race day pace is 5:00/km.

I’ve read that you should take them on at least 1 long run.

My program’s longest run is:

* 13km Easy
* 13km MP
* 11km Easy

6:00/km seems on the wrong side of the threshold to be running 24km in these things…

Do you just change shoes for the middle segment and hope 13km is enough?

(Also doing some intervals and tempo work before this long run)

ASICS Superblast 2 Alternatives for Long Runs with MP segments?

What are SB2 lovers moving to now?

My SB2s are about halfway through their life. By the end of this marathon block, they will be gone.

I have a slightly arthritic big toe so I need firm, stiff, rockered shoes with a roomy toebox. The SB2 let me run distances I didn’t think I would be able to and I’m quite annoyed the SB has moved in the direction it has with the SB3.

My options are the following.

Buy a secondhand pair of SB2s I found for an extortionate amount.

Cloudmonster 3 Hyper: similar but a bit heavier and not as agile.

Cloudmonster 3 Hyper LS: save up for this which is lighter due to the upper but otherwise the same as the regular.

ASICS Megablast: I’m not sure how these will go with my toe but they might be okay. Just the softness that doesn’t match my requirements.

Do Win Hurricane Max: straight up Chinese plagiarism but doesn’t come in my size. Just putting it here for people interested.

Saucony Endophin Azura: I actually already have this but it doesn’t quite match. Bit of toe pain due to the annoying grooves they have throughout to give it flexibility.

Wait for something new to come along.

Any suggestions I have missed?
