I took my baby sister to see Excision and I can't stop thinking about it
Disclaimer: my sister is the youngest girl and is barely 4'11, that's why I call her my baby sis, but she is very much an adult (22).
She knew next to nothing about EDM and all the times I've tried to send her songs (house, ukg, dubstep, trap, liquid d&b) her reaction was very disinterested. I never sent her any riddim because I know riddim is an acquired taste and can really not be peoples thing. But I already had a ticket for Excision when she told me she was going to come see me, and there was no way in hell I was missing it, so I bought her a ticket too.
Anyway, we take a little 🍄 (she'd never had them before and wanted to try) and head out to the venue. On the way to find seats, we meet some ladies who compliment our outfits. I tell them it's my sister's first time and these ladies literally scream with excitement, causing my sister to cower behind me 😂 they then begin to shower her with trinkets and kandi.
We find our seats and Phiso comes on. I'm dancing but keeping an eye on her. She's sitting but she seems to be nodding along. At one point I notice her face is slightly in a grimace. Im worried it's what we took so I lean over and ask her if she's feeling okay. She shakes her head slightly and says "this shit is really good". Y'all ...I got the biggest grin on my face, and I say "fuck yeah it is!"
Funtcase comes on, and he ends up being her favorite. She loved his spooky visuals and mask. Barely Alive finally gets her out of her seat and really grooving. But Infekt b2b Samplifier? Oh man.... That's when she goes absolutely feral. I show her how to high knees and we did that for the entire set. At one point she stops to rest and I sit with her and give her some water. She looks kinda sad and I ask her what's wrong. She shouts over the music, "I don't want this to end!" I just kind of smile at her with understanding.
Halfway through Excisions set, she asks if we can go to afters lol! After the show ends, we get Indian food at one am, and I tell her that that is essentially what I do every weekend. She says next time she visits she wants to go to afters. On our way back home, she ends up passing out in the back seat before we even get there. I don't blame her at all, 6 hours of bass to the face can be a lot. I can't stop thinking about how I was her once. I got taken to my first EDM show (albeit my experience was very different: I saw Prydz), I experienced the lasers, the trinkets, how kind and welcoming everyone was. And to see it happen to someone else was genuinely such a beautiful experience. I love this community so much ❤️
