The Straw Hat Riot literally feels like something from satire

The straw hat riot was a bizarre wave of violence that swept NYC in September 1922. At the time there was a “rule” that stated one could only wear straw hats (or boater hats) between May 15th and September 15th, after which one could only wear felt hats. Starting September 13th, various youth gangs, armed with clubs and other makeshift weapons, began wandering the streets attacking anyone they saw wearing a boater hat, sometimes beating them up quite severely. These assaults would often become street brawls as the victims began fighting back. These assaults and street fights became very widespread over several days swamping the local police departments, who were unable to contain the situation. This wave of violence would ultimately contribute to the boater hat falling out of style.

In Project Hail Mary (2026), Ryland Grace utilizes a multi-tool during a crucial moment to save all life on Earth and the distant planet Erid. This is reference to the fact that carrying a multi-tool everywhere is cool and smart and I don't "look like a dork," despite what my gf says.

Guys what am I gonna do with my life now

I legit uj hated everything Nolan made past Interstellar. Oppenheimer was the worst for how dogshit it was compared to the hype it got. I loved being the "Chris Nolan sucks actually" guy. But The Odyssey was... fucking amazing. How am I going to rebuild my personality after this catastrophe?

[ANALOG] Another playing card

Not sure if I have to put a NSFW tag on this as there's bad language? Let me know if I need to edit!!

I'm 12 cards down in this deck of cards now and seem to have a bit of a horse theme going 😂

For everyone reflexively defending Hana Sharif who hasn't actually worked for her

A great episode of a local DC news show really gets into it. The gyst: she bent over backwards for visiting artists to burnish her own national reputation, but those working *under* her were routinely abused. Those of us who experienced it first hand are in near universal agreement, from both DC and St. Louis- she was a horrible boss who runs institutions into the ground. She used both theatres as a platform to step on while failing up, leaving wreckage behind.

Me casually learning that yet another thing I do is a *trait*

This time it's toe-walking. At this point in my life I don't feel like getting diagnosed would even benefit me, but it sure is interesting to learn that YET ANOTHER Weird-Thing-I've-Always-Done™️ is apparently a Thing™️.

🍿🍿🍿

I must say, as a veteran of the Graeber Wars and the Taylor Lorenz Defense Force, I am very much enjoying seeing the fallout over The Body Keeps The Score. It's really entertaining to see a similar dynamic play out for a fight in which I have no dogs. Keep it up, you fantastic weirdos.

Sexual violence between boys is a genuine problem. PBJ + Microwave Frozen Veggie Mix

Simple quick lunch for work today.

As a teenager, I was frequently subjected to sexual violence/sexual humiliation/harassment by my peers. I don't want to get too far into the details, but there was physical violence, groping of genitals and anus, intentional physical injury of genitals and anus, insertion of hands and objects into mouth and anus, being held down in vulnerable positions with the threat of rape, forced stripping, public body humiliation and sexual humiliation. All of this was from straight boys. Some of them were even my friends. When these same behaviors are committed against girls they are unquestionably recognized as sexual violence. When they are committed against boys they're considered just bullying, teasing, goofing around. I never had a way to express the damage I was taking, I wasn't able to say that this was sexual assault, but I knew it was. It felt like assault. It fucked up my head like assault. Over 20 years later and I'm still scared of teenage boys.

I believe that these types of violent sexual interactions between boys are extremely commonplace, and they are generally accepted by society even if they are occasionally met with light disapproval. We are creating and perpetuating a nightmare for boys and young men, and I think it's because we are just too embarrassed to admit that it's happening.

Sandwich was fine, a little too pb-heavy so it was hard to eat. Vegetables were better than I expected, though I'll add more salt next time.

EDIT: just to add for clarity- while I was more often a target than some of the other boys, I was by no means alone. Many of the people who did these things to me also did them to each other, and they all seemed to think of it as a big fun joke. I suspect many of them secretly felt the same way I did.

My list

I was too late to hop on the tier list trend a while ago, but also there's a new album out! Of note: within each tier it's chronological, not by preference. I kinda feel like Wasting Light could've been a B+ , but I stayed within the standard framework. And I haven't listened to Skin And Bones yet.

Anyone still using a faderport v1 in 2026?

What's up y'all? I'm looking to get a single motorized fader controller. I don't care about knobs, transport controls, plug-in controls, just something to write level automation with. TBH the less stuff it has the better, just to save desktop space. Presonus Faderport seems to check all the boxes. I'm inclined to grab a used v2, but is anyone still using a v1 with the most current version of protools? V1's go used for as low as 40 bucks, so I'm curious if they still work ok.

Orange line wait still sucks and no one believes me

Every time I say that despite overall improvements, orange line wait times still lag behind the other lines, I get bombarded with comments saying im wrong. This is at lenfant, 6:30 on a weekday, no stated outages or delays. Been waiting here for a few minutes already, it was 16 minutes when i got here. None of the silver line trains are going to New Carrollton. This happens all the time. It's not as bad as it used to be, but this is still kinda shitty.

What are y'all using Streamdecks for?

Looking for ideas, especially in a theatre context. New boss is trying to get us to adopt Streamdecks into our workflow. I'm not opposed, I just don't get it, and I'd like to find a way to be stoked about this instead of causing conflict. We already have and use Go-Boxes for triggering QLab playback, and I'm pretty happy with using User-Defined Keys for most console control functions. People seem pretty jazzed on these things, but all I've seen them used for so far is just... a more complicated way to do what I already do just fine with the aforementioned control solutions. If it matters, all house consoles are Yamaha but we frequently rent in other brands. Help me out, i know y'all probably have some solutions to problems I didn't even think about.

Really enjoying it but don’t know if I like it as much as Fine Art

I just really like his bass playing. I think But Here We Are has some of the most interesting bass lines in modern rock music. He also stands out on Concrete and Gold. His playing was a big part of what originally got me interested in Sunny Day, and I'll be completely honest in saying that I was kinda disappointed for a while, thinking maybe he had toned it down too much to make space when FF started adding members left and right. I didn't really notice, but at some point he started bringing that more melodic/lyrical style back, and it was on full display for BHWA. I'm stoked that the bass is more up front in the mix for YFT than for previous albums, it makes me wonder if maybe I missed some things about his playing in the time from One By One through Sonic Highways.
