[Review] My take on these two sunscreens.

Hi all, so I initially posted this on r/EuroSkincare as both sunscreens I am reviewing are French brands but I thought this would also be worth sharing here as well!

I will preface that this won't be the most exciting or praiseful (if that's even a word) review of the sunscreens, but it is quite honest.

Disclaimer❗️ This review is based solely on my personal experiences with these products. Everyone's skin is different, has different preferences, and reacts differently to each product. Please keep this in mind ❤️ Either way, I would love to hear your opinions on these products, especially if you have tried them before.

Anyways, here we go. About my skin.

Sisley: Super Soin Solaire SPF 50+

TLDR: Felt sticky and heavy, didn’t absorb well. Did fine in terms of sun protection and didn’t leave any white casts. Overall, I don’t recommend it, especially if you have combination / oily skin, or will sweat a lot.

Pros: Did its job at sun protection, didn’t irritate skin, and didn’t leave a white cast.

Cons: Texture was really heavy and sticky. Felt oily, even in the winter. In the summer, it felt way too oily and didn’t allow my skin to breathe well. Sat on my skin (rather than absorbed). Difficult to cleanse off.

Recommended? Based on my experiences, no.

Comments:

  • I felt like this sunscreen was really heavy and it sat on my skin rather than getting absorbed by it. This came to me as a surprise, since it was marketed as non-comedogenic, so I expected more lightweightness and absorbency. I have been an avid Sisley user and have always invested into their pricey products – I absolutely love the cleanser and serum from the Tropical Resins line, which worked brilliantly on my combination skin and felt really lightweight. However, this sunscreen was a bit of a let down with its sticky feeling… and definitely felt like a waste of money. Because it felt so heavy and sticky, it also felt impossible to wash off, even with a micellar water double-cleanse. You probably need an oil double cleanse as this product felt oil-heavy (I just couldn’t do that as I had a lash lift).
  • In terms of protection, it did pretty well. I used it after getting laser treatment for pigmentation on my face, and I didn’t develop new sun spots or anything. It kept me well protected. It did not leave a white cast. It also didn’t directly cause break outs or irritation, it just felt awful on my skin texture-wise… which is still a big deal for me as sunscreen texture is what makes me want to keep using or stop using sunscreen!
  • To make myself feel less bad about not wasting money (and not throwing the product out, even if I want to) I ended up “using up” the rest of the sunscreen tube on my body instead. Even on my legs, it felt really heavy and sticky, and I felt like I had to wash my legs down with soap twice to get it off! I understand it is water-resistant, but I think this might be a step too far for me.
  • I get it if sunscreens want to be "moisturizing," but the moisture didn’t even get down into my skin. It kinda just sat on top of it, which is why I felt like this sunscreen was a bit of a texture torture. It already felt this way when I used it in cold, dry winters, and it felt even worse in summer weather – so heavy that I had to stop using it on my face, as when I got sweaty… yeah, no. I don’t wear make up, but I can imagine that this won’t benefit people who wear make up or sweat a lot. Which kind of defies the point of using sunscreen in the hot and sweaty summer weather…
  • I can’t speak for people with dry skin, but with the way that it “sits” on skin instead of getting into it (at least in my experience) I don’t know if I can recommend it for those with dry skin either. I would be interested to hear from others about their opinions on this sunscreen if they’ve used it before!

Caudalie: Very High Protection Lightweight Cream SPF 50+

TLDR: It does feel lightweight, but it leaves my skin oily and shiny for the rest of the day.

Pros: Did its job at sun protection, didn’t irritate skin, and didn’t leave a white cast. Feels lightweight upon application.

Cons: Makes skin oily!

Recommended? Based on my experience, not for oily or combination skin. Maybe those with other skin types have more of a shot with this one?

Comments:

  • With this product, I initially felt more hopeful, especially upon initial application. I tested it out at the mall where I bought it, and it felt lightweight and easy to spread. That also was the case when I bought it and used it on my face: it felt lightweight and easy to spread. However, there’s a caveat: lightweight products don’t mean they can’t get oily!
  • This sunscreen, in my experience, got my face and t-zone really oily really fast! I would find myself using oil blotting papers many times a day, and my face would go back to being shiny again. I don’t know what is causing this, as it didn’t feel as heavy as the Sisley product. It didn’t feel as bad as the Sisley one, though, especially when I sweat – thanks to its lightweightness. But it didn’t stop the oil or shine on my t-zone, and only made it worse. I actually read up other reviews online, and others with combination skin also shared similar experiences. I guess I’m not alone with my experience with this product. I can’t imagine myself wearing makeup over this sunscreen as I’d be scared that it would melt off from the oiliness it has caused!
  • Would be interested to hear from others who have tried this product (and your skin type)!

Note

For those who wonder about the product ingredients, I won't post it here as products can vary regionally. I suggest you look it up for your region. I bought the Sisley sunscreen at the airport duty free store in Hong Kong, while I bought the Caudalie sunscreen in the EU -- if you are curious about the ingredients in the products that I used.

Secondly, Caudalie does produce a *body* sunscreen spray that I like. That one has been fine for me, granted, I never used it on my face. I’m still on the hunt for a good face sunscreen!

P.S. Sorry for the edit yall, the markdown thing didn't go through the first time.

My review of two sunscreens

Hi all, with summer coming along, I'd like to post my own review of two sunscreens that I have used.

Foreshadowing... not the most exciting things will be said about these products, but at least I'm being honest!

Disclaimer ❗️ This review is based solely on my personal experiences with these products. Everyone's skin is different, has different preferences, and reacts differently to each product. Please keep this in mind!

  • My skin type: combination skin (oily t-zone area that is prone to congestion especially my forehead, drier cheeks)
  • My sex / age: F25
  • Routine: I keep my routine simple: cleanser → sometimes a serum → moisturizer → sunscreen, and I do not usually wear make up.

Is PickUp music worth it? Or should I improve by using Youtube videos?

Hi all!

So, for some context, I am not new to bass. I have been playing bass for years now, but feel like after nailing in the basics, my progress has hit a wall. I can play quite well when I have tabs to follow, and I am at a beginner-intermediate level & can play some slap techniques. Like, I can play Muse's Hysteria just fine, or RHCP's Dark Necessities. But that's the thing, I'm only fine when I rely on tabs.

However, I feel like I am weak in scales, theory, or in the knowledge that I need to improvise basslines or nice grooves when I am jamming with others. Or if I want to work on my own songs. I end up just playing the root note, and each time I try to experiment away out of the root note, it sounds terrible! It sounds nothing like a groove. I have something I vaguely imagine in my head but don't know enough to execute it. Basically, I lack the tools to be a good bass player on my own, or to add ornamentations to what I want to play in a way that works with the genre or scale or key.

I recently read other redditors' reviews (for guitar, rather than bass), and they have been positive. I have also found quite a few Youtube videos and playlists explaining scales and all, but I feel like I am just hopping from one video to another on this topic. Or, sometimes as videos are from different creators, some content overlap already, or they don't have continuity. So I wanted to ask if anyone tried PickUp Music and if it's worth the price?

Or, if anyone has Youtube playlists that teach this and have a good structure that I can follow, I would appreciate it! I would appreciate something structured, and something that won't start from learning to play the bass from scratch.

I think i ruined my brand new corset...

Hi all, so I recently got my first corset and the people at the shop told me to just hand wash it with water and gentle detergent. Obviously, I felt compelled to wash it before wearing it (it could've collected some dust in the store, who knows, I don't want to get itchy skin).

So I washed it by filling a small bucket / tub / basin with cold water and detergent and tried to hand wash it. Everything looked normal, but when it dried, the velvet seemed to all crinkle up into this bumpy / wavy texture. What do I do? I feel really bad... I think I messed up the care of my first corset. I spend £85 on it and haven't had a chance to wear it properly yet :(

It most likely is my own fault in not caring for it properly. Is there a way I can still salvage it? And moving forward, how do I care for my corset? I really thought I was doing what the shop told me (they didn't elaborate in great detail but I also assumed that it would be hand washed "normally" and to just be extra gentle with hand pressure and all).

Aw man i do feel bad that i ruined it with how i washed it :(

Are water-based air coolers worth it?

I have heard mixed opinions on air coolers, and that it adds a great deal of humidity or doesn't cool down very well when it is already humid in the room. However, I am getting a dehumidifier soon, so I don't know if it's worth it to get an air cooler and make some weird cycle of removing humidity then cooling down with the humid air cooler 😅

Ideally, I'd like a heat pump and / or portable airco too, and not the water based air cooler. However, there are some reasons I can't get a portable airco right now:

  1. Cost. This is my biggest reason. I'm an international and I am renting. I am not planning to stay in this country for more than a few more years at most, so it's not worth the massive investment since there is no long term.

  2. It also seems difficult to set up the portable airco, where you have to put the hose outside and seal windows and everything. My apartment is also set up weird, the bedroom is the only room with windows, so if I want it in my living room I'd have to snake the big airco hose around my bedroom and through the door to the living room. I wish I could install a heat pump, but I'm planning on living here permanently nor do I own a home.

So, yeah, since I'll be picking up the dehumidifier, it still worth getting a portable air cooler? Right now the air cooler sounds sensible and appealing... in theory. But I don't know if I'm being overly optimistic thinking I can pump humidity out with a dehumidifier while putting it back in with the air cooler. Would appreciate advice / if anyone has had experience with this before. Does the portable air cooler actually cool down the room? Is it worth putting in some money?

Does it matter which hand? How do I know ASL tutorial videos aren't mirrored?

Just as the title says.

I am trying to start learning ASL as a hearing person, but there is no indication if the videos or flashcard materials are mirrored, and if I can follow them with my hands as is. Does it matter if I put my left or right hand forward, for instance? Or is it just dominant hand? Or what is it? I have beens struggling since I am confused by whether I am doing it right, or if I am accidentally inverting or mirroring everything. Obviously, this only matters if the directionality or left / right hand distinctions matter. Of which I am not sure. And for those who use ASL, how do you tell apart in general if say, you're right handed and talking to someone left handed.

Strapless / bandeau bra recommendations for flatter chest and smaller body

So according to the bra size calculator, this is what I got:

Suggested starting size: 26C UK

The sister size of 28B may be more comfortable.

I am looking for a strapless bra (preferably not wired). I have been struggling to find them, especially in regular shopping -- e.g. stores that you can try in, regular brands, even online ones. In stores, they practically don't carry this fit. The only online brand I know that has received positive reviews is Lou, but they don't have strapless options (or at least non-wired ones). Trying and returning items that don't fit from Europe might also be a massive hassle.

I personally want to avoid stick on bras, especially with a hot and humid European summer coming along.

Would truly be grateful as I've spent my whole life trying to find a solution to this. All the other bras either don't fit or just slip all the way down (and has led me to embarassing situations). Meanwhile, using nipple covers alone give my boobs no structure or volume whatsoever -- and I am already small and flat enough! I think a bandeau bra would be perfect, I've seen a few but the ones I've seen in stores kept sliding down and aren't small enough. The Skims one that has extra small sizes, again, don't hold my girls together or add volume to them as they are made with some "buttery soft" fabric. It also doesn't cover nipples well.

Honestly, if it has to be a strapless bandeau but wired, so be it! I'd rather have it not be wired, but at this point I am desperate. I have so many tube tops I'd like to wear especially with heatwaves and all.

I'd be grateful for recommendations ❤️

EDIT: extra calculator info

Measurements in cm that I put into the calculator:

Loose underbust: 68

Snug underbust: 66

Tight underbust: 64

Standing bust: 72

Leaning bust: 74

Lying bust: 77 (idk if this is supposed to be wider? Idk... did I measure wrong?)

I clicked the UK sizing, and I am female assigned at birth.

Custom henna tattoo places?

Hi all, just wondering if there are any recommendations. I live near the city center so anything of transit or biking or walking distance would be cool with me. I'm looking for a place that will do custom henna tattoos. It's because I want it for a concert, something inspired by the album cover, and I love the brown and more natural looking color of henna over temporary tattoos and they last longer. (I hope I'm not appropriating culture or anything by using henna for non-traditional designs... otherwise, just let me know!)

I was walking around the city center and saw a place that seemed to have henna, but they only put up mehndi designs. Does anyone have suggestions or know a place / person who can do this?

Do Dutch deaf (or hard of hearing) people also understand ASL?

EDIT! Thank you so much for all the responses here! I initially felt awkward asking some of those questions, so, a big thank you for taking my questions without judgment! 🫶🫶

About the post question, yes as some of you correctly understood, it is very much about bilingualism and the likelihood of encountering sign bilingualism. Hence whether it's worth picking up ASL. Since me picking up NGT might not be the most realistic thing to do as a non-Dutch person. I think I could've phrased my post question better too (sorry about that 😅).

The thing is, you can always Google translate your way out of everything. It is a practical and helpful solution. In my situation yesterday, that would've been the smart thing to do.

But I think this has made me realize how much I want to connect more with people with more human interaction. And just how many cool people I haven't been able to know or talk to since I only use spoken language so far! I'm not expecting myself to ever be fluent in signing, but I feel like it would be so much nicer if we can all interact with each other a bit more, even if it's just saying "have a good day" or "thank you." 💕

P.S. I'm not American 😆 just bilingual and an English speaker. My other language isn't quite as universal or useful as English 😅.

EDIT 2: A few comments mentioned learning the alphabet in NGT and some basic words or phrases. I think this is a BRILLIANT idea and I think this is also something we can do -- not just here, but in just about any language or any country as well. If I come across any resources, especially NGT useful phrases for English speakers, I will list them here. I hope this thread can now stay as something useful. I don't know why they don't teach us this in school!

I have left a comment to create that list! Feel free to add to it!

-----‐-----------------------------------------------------

This is such a weird question. I am myself able to hear perfectly, but I want to learn sign language. I am an English speaker, but I live here in the Netherlands. I hope I also used vocabulary appropriately 😅

TLDR:

The question as it stands on the post title!

The thing is, I know most Dutch people can speak English very fluently. But I don't know if the bilingual-ness translates within sign language too, or if ASL is also taught with the Dutch sign language to make communication more international.

If I am to learn sign language, I want to try ASL (American) since I plan to move around to many places, and ASL has the most online resources. But that's also why I want to ask the Dutch community if picking up Dutch sign language is worth it, or if ASL can do the job too, since I can't learn all sign languages at once.

Extra story:

If you're wondering why I am posting this, well, something happened today! I was in a hurry for some music-related commitments, and when I was at the door (of the music studio's location) there was a delivery guy trying to drop off a package. I tried to explain that I don't live at that address and not sure if I can drop off the package in the common area for him, etc. He signaled to me that he is hard of hearing. Admittedly, I was also not quick-witted enough to pull up my phone to type 😅. The package situation got resolved, but this whole interaction reminded me of my high school best friend. I remember she one day just said she wanted to learn ASL. I didn't think much of it at the time, but after today, I just wished I could've communicated more with the delivery guy. And I think I really got that wake up call. (My best friend is a doctor now, bless her, she will make the world so accessible!)

While I rarely meet hard of hearing persons, I think people are cool and it'd be cool to be able to talk properly to people, be it small talk or just communicating in the situation I experienced. I guess you never know if someone around you might be hard of hearing. And yes, I know I could've been a little smarter in my situation by typing it out on my phone (which I did not think about at that time)... but I think it's about time I learn some kind of sign language! There is no distanvantage to doing that at all, it's a win-win for everyone.

Can't unsend messages without premium?

Hi all. Line is my main messaging app (I'm Thai) and I tried unsending images that I sent to my mom, as I needed help finding a shirt and I didn't send the right one.

A notification kept coming up about unsending and there are three options / buttons:

- close the notification after trying to unsend (which I tried, and it didn't do anything to unsend the message)

- start free premium trial button

- "later" button (also did nothing)

I wish I took that screenshot before, but now I started premium's free trial. If they really put unsend behind a paywall, this is nuts.

Also, when I tried premium and used unsend, it initially gave me the option of unsending unread messages without notifying (which is premium) and regular unsend. This implies regular unsend is not premium, as per the image. But then, why can't i use regular unsend?

I am confused! I don't want to pay for Line and it's difficult for me to move to other texting apps if everyone I know is on here. How do I cancel premium and still get regular unsend? I don't care for the notifications if someone sees my unsend or not...

Accidental sun exposure after my 5th laser session...

TLDR: I normally don't wear sunscreen and don't have body sunscreen, but since I now live in the Netherlands where I started my sessions, I have kept my legs well-shielded behind jeans. However, today, I had some sun exposure on my legs which I did not think ahead. It is currently a heatwave (sunny 33c degrees) and I wore a short skirt with no sunscreen. I had my last laser session around 5 days ago... what do I do now?

Some background:

Hi all, so I am F25, Southeast Asian ethnicity, but now living in the Netherlands where I get my laser treatments for my whole legs and armpits. As for my skin color, I would say that among my fellow Southeast Asians, I am considered somewhere between medium-fair (but not the Asian beauty standard level of "white"), and yes, compared to the average "white person" or Northern Europeans (if that's one way to put it) I am tanner than them. Before laser treatment, I have black body hair and it is on the finer end. The laser tech said I could laser my legs and armpits, but suggested I don't laser my arms as it is "too fine to be effective" and so I am only treating my legs and armpits. I'm not sure of my Fitzpatrick type, but this online quiz said I'm type 4 (it felt a bit wishy-washy, and as a Southeast Asian I wouldn't be considered "dark" at all), though I don't know how relevant Fitzpatrick is to this post. I have freckles on my face, but as for my body, it barely burns. It mostly tans. I only recall it burning when I went snorkeling for hours many years ago.

My last laser session was last Thursday (5 days ago).

Ok, to the accidental sun exposure:

I started lasering in the autumn / winter months of last year, so I shielded my legs pretty well behind my jeans. However, today, I went out to work in a short skirt, a total of around 1 hr in the sun. In the Netherlands right now, we are having a hot week of dry heat, 33c and super sunny. The sun here with the dry heat definitely feels more like a laser beam than back at home. I didn't have any long jeans left, as I went on vacation over the weekend and wore only long jeans there. They got super dirty, and are in the washer, but I didn't wash it last night as I just got back from the airport. So I rushed to work without sunscreen on my legs, wearing a super short skirt!! I only realized this at work!

I got my legs laser around 5 days ago, as aforementioned, and due to that I wore long jeans during this past weekend's vacation and used up all my jeans. When wearing long jeans I have never worn sunscreen as I thought it blocks UV pretty well already (correct me if I'm wrong, and I definitely need to get body sunscreen at some point as growing up in SE Asia, I didn't need sunscreen).

I recall the laser tech told me to avoid sun exposure for 10 days after the treatment, or use sunscreen. Of which, this situation has gone against both the 10 days of exposure (where normally I believe long jeans would cut most UV) and also the sunscreen, since I went with bare legs today.

How do I fix this situation? I am also worried about paradoxical hair growth and increasing that risk, as my hair was already on the finer end... oh dear. I do feel very bad about my own oversight!
