What's the deal with Jack Bunnell?

i just started watching season 19 - 20, and i genuinely don't understand what he's even doing. was he hired and handed a script that said "be the antagonist"? i had to stop myself from skipping ahead every time he showed up on screen

What’s the pettiest reason you’ve ever immediately DNF’d a book and never looked back?

by “petty,” i don't mean technical things like bad prose, boring pacing, or other legitimate criticisms of the book. i mean the ridiculously minor thing that made you go "yup i'm done here"

What is the exact genre of these tracks? Need help so I can track down the music my late uncle used to listen to

i’ve been listening to some jpop groups lately, and some of them really remind me of music my late uncle used to play

from what i remember, it was (probably) a western, male-fronted band, maybe from the 60s–70s (or possibly something more modern just inspired by that era), and they were singing in english

i initially thought it might be the Beach Boys, but i listened through some of their albums and it doesn’t really match what i remember

i thought pinpointing the genre/style might help, but whenever i try to look up these tracks, most sites just categorize them as “J-pop,” which isn’t very useful for figuring out what older music they might be drawing from

these are the tracks:

AKB48 - Labrador Retriever

BOKUAO - 青空について考える

BOKUAO - 初めて好きになった人

Nogizaka46 - Baretta

Nogizaka46 - Guruguru Curtain

i’m not really looking for more jpop, just trying to identify a band(s) from memory that my uncle used to listen to, and these songs reminded me of it

even if it’s not an exact match, anything that feels similar would be great.

thanks!

When I was a kid my dad used to make me watch Deadliest Catch with him and I ended up with a big fat crush on Jake Anderson

my dad thought he was teaching me to appreciate hardworking fishermen or whatever. i'd always act super invested and enthusiastic and it made him so happy, but little did he know i was just sitting there absolutely ogling at my first questionable tv crush

sharing this after seeing the recent updates because i suddenly remembered it and it was kind of funny

What's a premise that's an immediate "Yep, I'm reading that" for you?

is there a premise, setup, or style that makes you instantly interested, no matter the subgenre or author?

What are some less-obvious signs of social class in Indonesia?

inspired by this thread:

What are some subtle signs of social class in America? : r/AskAnAmerican

"We would've been better off under Dutch colonialism"

does anyone else notice this sentiment coming from seemingly educated individuals?

i get where it comes from. people are frustrated by the government, corruption etc. and it's probably an offshoot of the "KaburAjaDulu" sentiment

i also wonder if it's a side effect of being too skeptical of government narratives? being critical of what you're taught by the government is healthy, but some people seem to go so far that anything the government says must be automatically 1000% wrong

and somehow that ends with takes like "actually, the dutch were trying to develop Indonesia" or "the dutch were here to save us from ourselves" which is totally bullpoop

i mean you can admit the dutch built infrastructure and institutions while also admitting that they all did it to run a COLONY. not because they want the locals to prosper

people also seem to have this fantasy that they'd be one of the rich colonial elite and not a regular peasant whose life is a thousand times worse than what we experience today

also .. do people seriously think a colony of 280 million people would just peacefully exist into the 21st century? nationalist movements would have emerged sooner or later, rebellions would have happened and we'd all still end up fighting for independence

and another thing. couldn't they AT LEAST leave actual dutch people out of this fantasy? seeing indonesians in comment sections begging them to come back and save us is beyond embarassing and idk if they actually thought of it as intellectually contrarian. idc. besides, all it does is validate people who genuinely think colonialism was a civilizing mission. especially in this day of age where europe is slowly sliding back into fascism. like, have some harga diri will you

Why is "Muka Indon" an insult when (non-melanesian) Indonesian and Malays look the same?

i'm indonesian, so i'm already used to the indonesia–malaysia banter online. probably too used to it lol. both sides say dumb and offensive shit, and i'm definitely not saying indonesians are any better bcs they throw around out of line insults about malaysians too (especially when they insult bangladeshis for being in malaysia when they know damn well whos also in malaysia????)

but the "muka indon" as an insult has always taken me aback, like what does that even mean? afaik non-melanesian indonesians and malaysians look more or less the same in terms of physical appearance. javanese, sundanese, minang, malays, bugis, etc. we share a lot of ancestry. and if you put random indonesians and malaysians next to each other and ask a foreigner to guess which is which, they'd probably wonder what tf are we talking about

i’m glad idols don’t always have full control over their musical direction

i genuinely think giving idols too much creative control isn’t always a good thing

lots of idols are amazing performers, vocalists, dancers, and entertainers, but being a great idol doesn’t automatically mean you have the instincts to be the person shaping your group’s musical identity

sometimes (if not ALL the time) the company’s creative team is the reason a group has an identity at all

it's always funny when a group releases a critically loved, fan favorite song that becomes a defining moment for their career and later a member casually says they hated it and wanted to do something else ...and the “something else” is always most generic/trendy/overdone concept imaginable

there’s a reason companies hire producers, A&R teams, and creative directors

WWI/WW2 - The bonds forged amidst the horror

Looking for books that focus on the bonds between soldiers during both world wars. Stories about the camaraderie, brotherhood, and the little moments they shared in the trenches/battlefield

TOTALLY OPEN to darker and more heartbreaking stories too, so don’t hold back!

Thanks!

For those whose spouse cheated and it wasn't a dealbreaker, why?

disclamer : i'm not married. i'm asking because my dad cheated when i was a kid, and they are still together. growing up, i never really understood that decision, especially that my mom was (and is) the breadwinner of the family, but that is a story for another day. it's made me curious about how other people think about infidelity in a marriage

for me, cheating has always seemed like an automatic dealbreaker, so it's difficult for me to imagine choosing to stay after it happens

if you've experienced infidelity in your marriage and decided to work through it instead of ending the relationship, what led you to that decision? was it something about the circumstances, your spouse's response, your history together, your values, or something else entirely?

i'm not looking to debate whether staying or leaving is "right," or to judge anyone's choices, just genuinely trying to understand a perspective that's very different from my own, especially from people who have actually lived through it

thanks in advance!

how did GFRIEND end up getting all the credit for melody/string-heavy kpop?

first of all i love gfriend. they are still one of my all time favorite musical acts and i'm not trying to downplay their impact at all, but this is something i've been wondering for a while

whenever a group releases a song with prominent strings, orchestral elements, or a very singy chorus, gfriend is often the first comparison people make (eg. TWS jokingly called "bfriend" when they debuted)

but the thing is, there were already groups releasing similarly melodic and string-heavy songs before gfriend debuted (early SNSD, Apink, Lovelyz who debuted a year before them, etc), so i'm kinda curious as to why people feel such a strong association between that sound and gfriend and not groups that did it before them

Kpop stans sucks so bad at recommending new music

i'm fully convinced that kpop stans are the worst music curators EVER. and i don't mean they have bad taste, i mean they're genuinely bad at recommending music.

you'll be like, "i listened to insert group with a very specific sound here and i enjoyed their music so much! any similar groups i should check out?" and they'll recommend a group that has little to nothing in common with them.

or they'll completely misread your request and say some nonsense like, "i think you like that group because they do high notes! my faves do high notes too! you should check them out!"

NO! THAT IS NOT WHAT I'M ASKING! WRONG ANSWER!

it genuinely feels like people don't approach recommendation threads with the mindset of helping someone discover music. they approach them with the mindset of gaining another fan for their faves.
