Two new Precode horror purchases

I'd been trying to cut back but one of my favorite sellers had these books up and I had to get them! I love the skeleton cover, and of course, a werewolf book with a busty redhead? I'm all in.

Beyond pre-code horror covers

/u/crossbones14/ commented on Beyond in my other post and I got the urge to put up the rest of my Beyond covers!

I am hard pressed to decide a favorite if I’m honest.
As a decades long Dungeons and Dragons player I’ll pick the “Lyre of Doom” cover since I am planning on making a cursed item for my party to find that I will try to trick the bard into using. 😂😂

Some recent scans of pre-code horror

Working on cataloging and scanning my collection, trying to get a handle on some considerable years of chaos. Here are some new scans !
I collect LB Cole covers and as you can see there’s some great ones here imo!

I think the Black Cat Mystery Lee Elias cover is one of my all time favorites despite not being Cole!

Non-EC precode murder books!

I have a lot of EC books and they show violence on the covers. That said ..
These are what I think might be the most violent non-EC covers I have.

Each cover depicts a past act of violence (there’s a dead or dying character on the covers).

Each cover shows a character about to commit more violence (strangling or stabbing)

The dialog on the covers from the characters expresses a lack of guilt about said past violence and or an obvious desire to commit more murderous violence.

This was really sensationalized violence! I am sure it sold books.

Is it a scam, or precursor to a scam?

This is the second time I have seen this on an item I’ve posted.
I post and someone puts a comment that their sister/brother is interested but doesn’t have Facebook and they provide me a phone number and ask me to text this person who doesn’t have facebook .

Pearl

Pearl’s heart couldn’t give us any more time. She passed in her sleep yesterday. Every day of the last two years since her ARVC diagnosis we took as a bonus (she was resuscitated at the initial event/diagnosis, and spent 10 days in icu). We did all we could - meds and checkups, even a cardiac ablation in 2025.

So the timing was not of our choosing (when is it??!) but her peaceful passing gives us some small measure of comfort.

We are devastated by her loss.

Osprey (Cape Cod, MA, USA)

There are several Osprey who nest locally here in South Yarmouth, MA, and standing in my back yard a few days ago I saw two circling over the pond. I managed to snap this fairly decent pic !

BitDefender Securepass gripes

Some background: I've been a Bitdefender user for about 2 years, after finally getting extremely frustrated with a competing product (mcaffee) I also stopped using another password manager product (lastpass) . Anyway, although I like the Bitdefender securepass product a lot, there's a few gripes I have.

This is just me venting, I'm not looking for support per se, etc.

BitDefender Securepass logs me out of my account on my devices all the time. I freakin' hate this. I know, I know, it's for security, but then i have to go to an email (I also hate it's an email, why not an auth app) and it says "we've detected a new login" and I know, this is just semantics, but for fuck's sake, it is NOT A NEW LOGIN. I also dislike that it chooses the frequency it logs me out at. If i could set it, say, "after a restart" or "after 72 hours" (or literally, if I had any control/granularity) I'd be able to handle this better.

I have been logging into this Securepass account for two years on these devices (windows laptop, windows desktop, android tablet, and iphone). It's not a new login.

Since it doesn't force login to Bitfdefender Securepass immediately on browser login (or phone login in that case), a lot of the time this will catch me a multitude of inconvenient timings, too. Oh hey, i need to quickly log into banking, paypal, venmo, or something, and it chooses at that time to tell me "you need to login to bitdefender" and so, there I go, stopping whatever I was doing, have to login to bitdefender, then also, second step, enter my master password.

Yes, I know all these things are good for security but for user interface design and convenience they're a giant pain in the ass.

I wish there was as secure way to cache a local copy of my password vault, too, because I do have some passwords that are app based that become not available if the internet is down (this has only happened once in the last two years to me, where I needed a password and had no internet and would like to have had that password).

OK, i have vented enough.

FWIW, Securepass still as good as if not better than Lastpass.

Worcester tornado of 1953

In two days, 73 years ago a terrible tornado struck Worcester.
You can read about it on the Wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester\_tornado

My mother and her siblings were living in Winchester, MA and ranged in age between 8 and 13. The empathy of children can really still make me so happy.

They decided to do a neighborhood show and invite Winchester folks to see it and send the proceeds to Worcester.
Alas I found no pictures yet of the kids performing but you can see their notice and the audience pics included. Be sure to click to expand the photo and see all the details

My mom and her sister are no longer with us but my uncle is still hanging in.
I wish I had a chance to ask my mom who was the historian of the family what they did and how much they raised.

I know many of the folks who would have experienced the tornado are now gone, or getting on in age but if you read this I hope you take some solace that you were the topic of some concern of my mom, aunt and uncle back in 1953.

Update 5 months post surgery

I had surgery on Dec 4, 2025. Within 2-3 weeks I was feeling 90% better and had return of flexibility and almost total lack of pain though I had wrist weakness and a lack of strength for at least 6 weeks. Sometime in the new year I realized I had stopped favoring the wrist and had enough strength for my day to day activities again.

Yesterday I was playing a long session of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. This is a computer based action role playing game. Using a video game controller has helped over the use of a keyboard and mouse before the surgery and I have continued that post surgery. During a crucial moment I felt a sudden twinge of pain at the incision site. A few minutes later I decided I wanted to give my wrist a rest and a few hours later I couldn’t tell if had any issues. Today I once again felt a bit of pain (nothing shooting or intense but still) and decided to take a break again. I also decided to ice it.

I believe this is my wrist giving me a sign I’m stressing the tendons too much so I will dial it back!

For the curious I’ve posted a pic showing the scar and incision site.

Unrelated to DQ: I am struggling right now with another tendon problem in *both* hands that from my research seems to be trigger finger. I don’t like this getting old bullshit.

So, at the end of LoH we burn the Tree of whispers. We do this to release Lorath from his contract with the tree.

What am I missing? How does the tree of whispers exist after the end of LoH? Did I miss something?

I have an opinion on that plot point but that’s not the point of this post, I’m just trying to reconcile this. After we burn the tree I was thinking they’d just replace the tree in the plot with some other similar mechanism. But no it seems like the burning is ignored??
