CS Prospective student: what’s it like?

I’m applying this fall as a student from the U.S. (but with Canadian citizenship) to UofA. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the university and I keep seeing a lot of mixed stuff. I have a few questions.

I’ve been considering applying to the honors program because I’m interested in research, I just think it’s pretty cool. But I can’t find a direct answer on if someone can minor in something while in the honors program. I want to minor in theater because I’ve been doing it for a while and really like it, but is that possible in the honors program?

Do people in CS at UofA like it? Do you think it’s prepared you at all? The other (canadian) universities that I’m applying to are Carleton, UofC, Dalhousie, and UVic.

I toured UofA and it’s by far my favorite school on the list, I really loved the campus and the city, but I want to make sure the program is good, too.

6 Weeks Post op: DI w/ FNG, Dr. Lee in Montreal

Roughly 6 weeks post op by now!

I was really lucky to get surgery with Dr. Chen Lee at GrS Montreal. I’m 16, and I was originally going to get surgery last year but the law barred me as I was getting my consult.

Healing has been almost entirely perfect. I got drains out in 5 days, bandages off in 6, and I was able to shower in 7. I did end up having to return to my job immediately on the 7 day mark, and the effort gave me a small seroma, but I healed very quickly from it and it went down with the binder and stuff. Do not do what I did and heal quick!

I didn’t have much breast tissue before, but I did have to get DI because I had some extra skin. Everything was great! I’m really happy with my results. I’m doing pretty heavy scar care now so I can make them as invisible as possible.

Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (gen 11) pros and cons?

I’m looking at the gen 11’s 5060 configuration. I’ve been looking for a laptop that allows me to draw with it while also being able to play games and do normal schoolwork and stuff. I saw the stuff about the forcepad and pen that made me look into it more. I know it’s expensive, but I’m saving for a new laptop anyway.

What are the pros and cons of it? Is it worth it to buy it?

Student life at Dal??

I’m an American student applying to Dal this fall. I toured it and LOVED it, and it’s one of my top choices. But I went during a time when not that many people were there (late may).

What is student life and residence life like at Dal? What do people do for fun? Are there things to do on and around campus, like clubs and stuff? I’m not looking for like an SEC party school, but I don’t want there to be absolutely nothing social to do.

Thanks!

To current students: What is student life like (living on campus)?

I’m an American student applying to Carleton this fall. I’m not a huge partier, and I obviously value academics a lot, but I want to at least do SOME stuff outside of academics.

What is student life and residence life like? What do people do for fun at Carleton? Do people do anything for fun at Carleton??

Thanks!

Is this bad??

It looks like there’s a chunk taken out of my nipple or like a divot or something. And there’s some thick white stuff that sometimes is in it that I clean out when I change the bandaids. There’s no warmth or redness or fever, I don’t think it’s an infection, but it’s worrying me. Is it normal? Will the chunk settle?

what suit should i get as a teen?

i’m 16 (going on 17) and I plan to get another suit at some point because it’s useful to have and i’m going into my senior year so there’s going to be formal events coming up. right now I have a normal black suit (i got it from Birdy Grey for prom, it was affordable and closer to my size so it didn’t take much to tailor) and i’m looking to maybe get one other one for slightly more casual but still formal
events throughout senior year like homecoming or banquets or awards nights, stuff like that. any recommendations for places and/or colors? it’s a bit hard for me to find stuff since i’m very short, so everything i get i have to tailor anyway.

Hi, I’ve had an Asus Proart P16 for 2 years, and it’s had so many issues. I just now had to send it in because it just stopped turning on. I need a 2-in-1 laptop that I can draw on and use for art with a pen or stylus, but I also want to be able to play some games on it and 3D model on it since I also do that. The main thing I need is the form factor, since that’s important to me. Preferably something with at least a little bit less faults than the P16.

**Thank you!**

CS Major theater minor?

Hello! I went on a tour of Dal a few months ago and LOVED it, but the one thing that made me a little sad was that the tour guide said there’s no opportunity for a theater minor. When I checked the website though, it said that there is a theater minor. Is it possible to minor in theater at Dal as a CS major or not?? Is it possible to still participate in musicals/plays if you aren’t a theater major?? I’m looking into both Carleton and Dal and I don’t know which I like better, since I like Dal’s school spirit and stuff better but there’s pros and cons to both.

One of the only places nearby that sells poutine

Been lurking around here for a little bit and noticed this subreddit seems to be very purist when it comes to putting things on poutine. There is almost no poutine in massachusetts. This is basically one of the only poutine places in a 50 mile (80km) radius from me. At this point I don’t really care if it’s a crime, this is all we got.

How to not be nauseous?

I have surgery in 2 days (tuesday!) and I’m super worried about nausea. I’m going to GrS Montreal for it, and I’m not sure what they do for anti-nausea meds because when I checked the booklet it said you’re allowed to take like OTC stuff (gravol, dramamine, etc) but didn’t mention anything about like giving patches or medication to avoid nausea. I’m really worried about being nauseous, and i’m especially worried about throwing up because they make you stay in a hotel for 3 days and i don’t wanna get sick in a hotel.

What do I do?? Should I email them before and ask if they do anti-nausea stuff? Should I ask for anti nausea meds when I get there and just hope? I already got some dramamine, especially because I do have a drive back (I’m not driving, my dad is) and it’s about 5 hours and i’m worried about motion sickness. Usually I don’t get motion SICK, but sometimes I’m prone to a bit of nausea in the car if i’m looking down.

Essay topics?

I honestly don’t care about the essay too much since half my application is to schools in Canada, and the program I’m going for (cs w/ theater minor) doesn’t require essays for those schools.

I see a college counselor, and I brainstormed a bunch of essay topics. She really wants me to write it on my mechanical pencil (I have this Pentel Graphgear 1000 that i’ve had for 5 years) but I feel like that’s kind of stupid and I don’t know how to turn that into a coherent story, especially since it really doesn’t match most of my application, a lot of my application involves theater and community service. My other idea was how I make these 3D printed keychains for everyone in the musicals I participate in, I design them and print them myself, and I thought I could maybe tell the story about how that tradition came to be and how it’s changed the way I interact with the communities I’m in, alongside how it kinda tied into my passion for theater and technology.

She thinks that the essay should be a deviation from the rest of my application, and that I should write about something unrelated, hence the mechanical pencil. I feel like that makes no sense and I don’t really know how to tie the pencil thing into my life.

What should I do? Should I suck it up and write about the pencil, or should I not listen to her and write about the keychains?

Not smelling bad?

I have surgery next week, but I’m worried about smelling bad since I have a 6 hour drive back home with my dad 3 days after the surgery (all the post op care is done back at home with this clinic, so I’m going to my PCP). I got a bunch of wipes, dry shampoo, and I’m going to shave my armpits and stuff to try to minimize smelling bad. Does anyone have any other tips for stuff like this? I’m terrified about smelling bad and I know it’s inevitable but I want to get rid of the smell as much as I can, and hopefully go back to not smelling horrible as fast as possible after i’m allowed to shower. I got like 3 extra binders for after I’m allowed to change them out as well, especially because I have a summer job and I need to go back to it asap. And because I have a sister who will torment me if i’m gross

How to play an intimidating character while short?

I’m auditioning for Footloose this fall, and I really want to audition for Reverend Shaw. The problem is I’m 5’1, and the kid who is gonna end up playing Ren (high school drama club, the show was picked for him) is 6’5.

I really want to try for this role, but I fear it may just not be meant to be because of the ridiculous height difference. Should I try anyway, and if so, how do I do it?

Thanks.

Top surgery and theater

I’m getting double-incision top surgery at GrS Montreal very soon, and I’m super excited! However, I’m volunteering as a stage manager at this theater over the summer, and I’m worried about missing too much. On average, how long will it take before I can get up and out of my house so I can go back and like help paint and stuff?

Engg/Computer Engg and theater?

I’m applying to UofA this fall, most likely into the engg program (I’ve heard mixed feelings about the computer science program, but I’m also considering that). I’m also really involved in theater, and I was hoping to either minor in theater or, if that’s too much, participate in like theater clubs or try to participate in productions.

Is it possible to participate in productions at UofA if you’re an engg student, or is it wayyyy too much work? Is it different for computer science? Or will I just have no time at all in any way to participate in theater?

Continuing learning Java after AP Computer Science A: what next??

I just finished the AP computer science A exam. I learned up to arrays and basic inheritance/interfaces (the exam doesn’t include it anymore but my teacher did) and I found out I like programming and I want to continue learning. I’m pivoting for a little bit of time because I need to do a final project in some other language (I picked C# to minimize the learning curve and so I don’t have to do much work) but I want to continue learning Java after cuz I guess it’s useful to know something.

Where do I go next? What should I start learning after getting to like the early intermediate level, and what are some resources that I can use?

Thanks!

I’m a junior from the U.S. and UAlberta is one of my top schools at the moment. I toured it and loved it, but I keep hearing mixed things about the program.

I know that the program doesn’t do co-ops and I’ve heard different things about the quality of the program. My goal is to probably go into graduate school either for a master’s in computer science or a master’s in education and become a computer science teacher.

What is the program actually like, in comparison to some of the other schools on my list in Canada? (UCalgary, UVic, Dal, MAYBE UBC but I haven’t toured it) I want to hear both the negatives and positives, I don’t want it to just be all doom and gloom unless it’s actually the most miserable school possible.

I’m taking precalculus this summer (i’m an international student from the U.S.) and I’m applying to UAlberta in the fall, but the applications open for international students on the 1st of August and I want to submit my application ASAP so i don’t have to worry too much about it.

Is it possible to submit the application without finishing precalc yet and then update the grade once I’m finished with the summer course?
