Today I sniffed Beardo Godfather on someone. My nose rejected it instantly due to the harshmess, the alcohol blast, and the sharp notes which had made me give away third bottle of this perfume to one of my friends. I stepped back almost instinctively, so I wouldn't catch the scent again.
But the first sniff had already done its job. It cracked open a pandora's box of memories — The two years of high school when Godfather was my signature scent.
In a jiffy, I relived every up and down of those two years. How it all started with a "Best Budget Perfumes for School" search on YouTube. How I saved my pocket money for days just to afford my first bottle. How that very first sniff smelled just as sharp as today's did. How, over time, I learned to love it, in fact everything about it, even that hasrshnes & alcohol blast. How I wore it every single day, to every occasion. How it stood apart from every other perfume I tried back then.
And then I remembered how I slowly fell out of love with it, once ME and designer perfumes entered my rotation. The sharpness and the alcohol blast I'd started to love became more prominent & so much unbearable that I got a headache every time I sprayed it. The notes I was once addicted to started smelling pungent.
I still don't know exactly why I started to hate Godfather. Was it because it carried the weight of high school's lows along with its highs? Or did my nose simply mature after smelling a wider, finer range of scents?
After the memories settled, I walked toward where the scent was coming from, took one deep, deliberate sniff, and admired it; not for what it is now, but for what it once was to me.
I guess this is what life does to us. We grow, look back at things we once loved; scents, habits, choices, old versions of ourselves and judge them by who we are today, calling it growth, when it's really regret in disguise. I've felt this with more than a perfume: decisions from two years ago I now cringe at.
But here's the philosophy I've landed on: Your past self doesn't deserve the trial. Back then, working with the logic and capability you had and that was the right call. Growing older just means you can see further now; it doesn't earn you the right to taunt who you were. So instead of cringing at the past, I choose gratitude because at that time, it was exactly what I needed and also, the only thing I was able to afford.
Didn't expect to be writing this post but here we are.
Last month I was making around ₹90K/month. This month I'm starting from zero. Life can change fast
I lost two remote jobs within the same month. Both community management roles, both gone within weeks of each other. One of those months where you realize how quickly things can flip.
I'm 20, been doing this for about 2-3 years. Mostly Discord and Telegram community work. Building engagement, running events, moderating, keeping communities alive and actually active. Also do reply guy work on X, driving impressions for brand and founder accounts.
