Chesterfield residents call for more transparency on Google data centers
Chesterfield residents say recent attempts at dialog by Google and county leadership have fallen short.
Google hosted two open houses this month to answer questions about its three ongoing data center projects: Project Peanut, Project Loch and Project Skye.
Zoning changes for two of the projects were approved in public hearings by county supervisors on May 28, 2025. Those two sites had been unveiled for public input earlier that year.
But the name of the entity behind those parcels’ purchases, plus a third in the county’s eastern portion, was not revealed to be Google until August 2025. And as VPM News reported in June 2026, the company’s $9 billion investment is substantial: a cumulative 1,500 acres are slated for development.
Residents at the hearings and unveilings said they weren’t satisfied with the answers to questions about water and energy usage or transparency at these sites. Their concerns stem from a 2018 non-disclosure agreement between Chesterfield’s Economic Development Authority and Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and from the scale of the projects.
Enter Data Center Defiance Central Virginia, a group organizing for more transparency in future data center deals. Members handed a petition thatwhich now has over 2,500 signatures to county officials at the July 22, 2026 Board of Supervisors meeting, calling for Chesterfield to stop signing NDAs for data center projects, and organized a sit-in demonstration with signs and placards outside that board meeting.

Scratches on new AT4
Hey GMC fam. Just bought a new black at4 and noticed a couple scratches before driving it off the lot. One about two inches on the front bumper and the other is an inch above the cab door passenger side. Dealer offered to repaint and mentioned taking the front bumper off and painting the whole thing. We’re a bit worried that something else might happen or the paint won’t match.
What’s been your experience with this type of thing? Should we be concerned?
Stuck zones
Follow up issue I’m having with two stuck zones after repairing my clean out: https://www.reddit.com/r/repair/s/WhBmhFefVM
The controller updates correctly but the zone does not respond to shut off. As long as the water is on at the street it’s running. I’ve seen sometimes the valve can catch debris and I’m suspecting that’s what may have happened from the repairs.
Any ideas from the pros out there?
Thanks!
Clean out repair
I had my clean out pipe (I think this is what it’s called. It’s what I blow out my Irrigation with) break off from riding lawnmower hitting it. It’s down pretty low and looks like it might have some dirty water in it. Are there any gotchas I need to worry about before I repair this?
Thanks!
Shoosmith Information
The folks at Chesterfield Citizens for Responsible Government (CCRG) have posted some information on their website about Shoosmith Landfill that may be of interest. There's a report on how things got to this point, who the players are, and quotes from the bankruptcy trustee. There are pictures of the conditions at Shoosmith, taken from DEQ documents, that show some of their inspection violations. There's information on Elevated Temperature Landfills, and how coal ash plays a role in raising landfill temperatures which, in turn, generates greater quantities of leachate. In case you didn't know, coal ash was used to build a lot of Shoosmith berms or cells - the pits where trash gets dumped. Yep, coal ash! AKA, fly ash. The surprising part is using coal ash like that wasn't illegal, and still isn't! In spite of known contamination by heavy metals like cadmium and other cancer-causing things. So now we have to wonder if any of those contaminants have leached out beyond the Shoosmith boundaries, into other properties or into Swift Creek or Piney Branch Creek. There's some documents that explain a lot about coal ash, and pictures of it being used at Shoosmith. Anyway, it's way too much to post here, but you can see it on the CCRG website at https://ccrg-va.org/blog/ .
