Motion Aware settings based on current scene rather than time?

I just finished a (painful) upgrade to the hue hub pro, and I'm working through the process of configuring some Motion Aware zones.

It works pretty well in a hallway area, and I've got it configured to use brighter scenes during the day and dimmer scenes at night. Nice.

The next area that I had planned to work on is our bonus room. We use it for different things throughout the day (office, hangout, movies), so using time-of-day based rules in Motion Aware won't work. What I really need in this case is the ability to define Motion Aware behaviors based on the current scene that's active in the room.

For example:

Bright white scene: Do nothing
Colorful hangout scene: Do nothing
Movie mode (most lights off, a few very dim red): Bring up the red ones a little to make it easier to find the restroom in the middle of a movie.

I don't see anything like this in the Hue app, but I figured I'd ask.

Instead of a horn, cars should have paintball guns.

Someone near you driving like a jerk? Paintball.

Someone driving 40 in the fast lane? Paintball.

Someone doesn’t signal, making you wait to figure out their plan? Paintball.

Someone thinks they’re the only person that matters in a zipper merge? Paintball.

Someone takes up 2 or 4 parking stalls with their land yacht? Paintball.

I’m no time, the most unsafe drivers will have cars covered in paint splotches. Easy way to know who to avoid via the magic of crowdsourcing.

Take action: write and call Congress to demand a national Flock ban

We need Congress to take action to ban Flock everywhere. This lets you automatically send a letter to Congress and after you sign will connect you to make a call.

Boomer’s witty comeback was 100% wit-free

I usually mountain bike for exercise. During Covid, a high-end spa started operating hiking excursions in the state park where I frequently ride. These are older, affluent folks, though generally pretty fit. They usually have very little experience hiking on mixed use trails, however.

The general etiquette on a double track trail (fire road) is to stay on your right and pass on the left.

Boomer and his wife are approaching me on their left side, basically in my lane. I come to a full stop to keep us all safe given their cluelessness.

Me, trying to smile even though I had to stop for them: “try to stay to your right, pass on your left - it’s just like driving”

Boomer wife, smiling back: “sorry about that!
Boomer, agitated and entitled: “It’s not like this is a road!”

Bro, what is a fire road if not a road?

Organizers are exhausted; please volunteer to help

Burnout is real. New volunteers are very rare, and existing organizers are fried.

There's a large group of people that are very unhappy with the current administration, but only a tiny fraction of those folks have stepped up to volunteer to help the cause. When I chat with like-minded people in my real-world network, everyone has a reason why they can't or won't volunteer their time to help. I see similar patterns online. Everyone seemingly has an excuse ready.

This post is a plea. I am begging people to step up and help the movement, because the current cohort of organizers is hitting a wall. That means that without fresh energy and ideas from new volunteers, the administration will have won the war of attrition. We can't let that happen.

To volunteer: Find your local 50501 chapter in the list on the fiftyfifty.one website, or contact your local Indivisible or Justice For All chapter. Send them an email and offer to help. It's really that easy.

There are so many rude/entitled folks on bikes these days. I miss the days when there was more trail camaraderie between riders.

I just finished a 3-day stint working on a volunteer trail crew. The worksite was far enough in that we all rode our bikes. Most riders passing through the worksite are super thankful, polite, and chill. About a quarter of folks will stop and ask how they can help out (awesome!). Another quarter of people can't be bothered to say thanks as they pass, and some won't even slow down a little through the worksite to keep the trail crew, and themselves, safe.

When did folks get so entitled? I'm not asking for people to shower volunteer trail crews with money, but "thank you" is completely free, as is riding at a safe speed through an area undergoing work.

Ultrahuman data breach

Just got an email from Ultrahuman that they had a data breach and leaked my email address to the world.

The email is adamant that the leak was limited to just email, but given UH’s history around deleting negative posts and generally being shady in attempt to make themselves look better, I’d bet that more was leaked than just email.

Thanks for the good times, Ultrahuman.

to pretend that climate change doesn’t exist.

Crossing out an inconvenient truth doesn’t make the problem go away.

We all have government-related documents that require periodic renewal. In the US, you get reminders by mail for things like drivers license renewal, registration renewal, property tax deadlines, etc.

The two major things that don’t have any type of reminder are both related to the US Federal Government: Taxes, which are due on the same day every year, and passport renewal.

Most us don’t use our passports very frequently, and as an adult, they are good for 10 years between renewals. It’s easy to get caught flat-footed with an expired passport right before a trip.

Rush renewal services exist, but they’re expensive, sketchy, and high stakes.

Some countries won’t allow entry with a passport that expires within 6 months of the date of entry.

Set a calendar reminder a year before your passport expires to start the renewal process. You’ll save yourself a lot of stress and money.
