How do you practise your bass ? Everytime I have ppl tell me to practise more yes I heard it many times but never advised what to practise though.
When you say play along with songs you have never heard of , what do you mean ? Play root notes or what ?
Some redditors say, know your major and minor scale. What do you mean ? I know them and I run the scale from G to E strings and then ? What is the 'know' you talking about ?
When I learn songs, I go YouTube to memorize the song. All muscle memory without knowing what notes I was pressing. I learn bass slightly above one year but I still unsure where are my basic notes are on the fret.
Time comes when I go for jamming with others. I get stuck when ppl request for songs I heard before but never learnt. Others just jam as per normal even though they are also not sure of the requested songs.
What am I lacking ? Why is it when I feel I can play bass rather good when I memorize the songs and then total arse when suddenly a new song infront of me and I look silly holding a bass without knowing what to do.
Most of the time I acted cool and as though I am already good in my playing (sorry to the folks at the jamming sesh, I look deceptive)
I am very sad and just feel a lot of ppl are way ahead of me.
What is my problem and how to rectify it fast so that I can join the jam sesh confidently ...... And continue to join the sesh
😭
I read that some ppl just jam with others and gotten used to unfamiliar materials. So what is key thing here ? How to tackle the on the spot unfamiliar songs ? Anything you need to prep on a daily basis ? As a bassist this is totally intimidating to me. I have joined jam sessions where suddenly ppl agree to play their common songs except me who havent heard the song yet. What I gotten for replies are just play the root notes of the chords. Ok so that is it ? Anything I can spice up on the spot. Prior to that what homework can I do ?
Can you share your experience ? What were you thinking when you started playing those unfamiliar songs ?
As above. Any recommended learning route besides more listening to jazz tunes ?
I plan to learn only 3 jazz songs and progress from there.
Autumn leaves
The girl from Ipanema
Blue bossa ( want to do watermelon man but so many version ? 1 is funky one is not sure what it is called)
What do you think of my novice play list for a jazz band ?
and in a novice jazz trio band, what do you do ? Do we play the standard same as album or start improvisation ? I can't improvise jazz bass yet cos the language is new to me.
I believe I saw somewhere the jazz standards have their own category ? How are jazz standards classified and within each category which should I start first ? Prepping to be a jazz bassist. I have minimal jazz knowledge but want to start somewhere
I heard this very often. Listen to many jazz standards but do I listen to piano version, horn version or guitar version if that jazz song comes in diff instrument. I want to start doing jazz bass and play in a novice jazz band..
How to know if I am ready to form a novice jazz trio ? How many jazz standards to know to be ready ?
Keen to start a jaz band soon or join one. Other than the jazz standards, any jazz fusions a bassist can learn the bass from ?
Is this even possible ? I am the only bassist in a group jam session. People are just throwing in random songs and make up that 26 songs. It may not be 26 songs when nearer the jam sesh date
The bassist just search for the chords in his tablet and play along. How is that possible ? What if the bassist hasn't heard of the song yet and doesn't even know how the song sound like. What will you do if you were the bassist
