My mom (60 years old) lives alone, as my dad passed away ten years ago. My sister and I live in other states because of our jobs. Recently, my mom keeps forgetting that she has left the stove on while cooking and this has caused small fires. The most recent fire caused the chimney to melt.
We bought her an Echo so that Alexa can help remind her etc. but my mom seldom uses it. What to do in this situation? I am scared that this might cause bigger accidents in the future.
Is anyone facing the same issue? If yes, how to help in this situation?

I work in population genetics, which means I set up 2 96-well plates for qPCR, or do 80 samples for regular PCR almost 6 days out of a week. Recently, I've been getting an ache in my right forearm from constant pipetting. Then I have to go back home and cook, wash dishes and sweep my house, which i do primarily with my right hand. The ache has now travelled to my shoulders and I need to constantly keep stopping while I am working because the pain shoots up. Moreover, my PI wants me to set even more reactions I normally do, because we have like over 160 samples....She is not kind and gets angry if I take even 1 sick day; how do I lessen the load on my arm? Should I start weightlifting at home to build my arm muscles? Has someone done this and seen a change?

Hello, my mum gifted me a 9-litre 13x8x8-inch small oven recently. I have tried to use it to bake my cakes/breads in it using a 6 inch square pan/6 inch bread pan. But my batter is always undercooked in the middle. And if i increase the oven time/temperature the rest of the cake becomes overcooked.

Is the oven's heat not consistent in a small sized oven that's why this is happening? Or should I be baking smaller volume of batter so that it has a chance to cook?

Please help me to understand what's the issue and how to use the oven. I don't want to let it rot away in my kitchen unused.

I am honestly so tired. I had informed her last week, I'll be going back home for 10 days, as I hadnt seen my family in over 6 months. While scolding me that time, she had slipped and said "..I have no personal grudge over you taking a leave...."; and look at what she has sent me in reply to my leave mail, even ccing the HOD. On the last working day, i was at lab till 6pm, completing all my labwork and she was not even there in lab. I had told her that I would send everything in email, and have already sent half of it. The biopsy tissue handling, i told her verbally that i have instructed my labmate to see over it.

She has been "correcting" my review article since last month. She just adds synonyms to my words in the article and berates me saying I dont know how to write. She has been putposefully delaying me in all major events. This is clear sabotage.

How do i reply to her mail? I am so pissed off.

Hi fellow rats, I am about to dive into RT-PCR as my research work progresses. We have a Bio-Rad CFX Duet-RT PCR thermocycler. I am reading the handbook given with the machine, but I wanted tips from already experienced users.

We will be isolating RNA from diseased tissue samples and then checking some gene markers' expressions.

What are some basic, often over-looked steps to have a perfect RT-PCR run?

My PI punishes me for not doing work according to her.

I usually get surgery samples over the weekend, which I need to process immediately. This means, as a 3rd year PhD student, i have spent most of my weekends and holidays in lab, where i travel 26km to and from the hospital to collect the sample, coming back to lab and processing it. Rarely have i ever said no and have gone to collect a sample, even at an hour's notice.

Its been summer here and I was experiencing heat exhaustion one weekend and had informed my PI that i was vomiting my guts out and I can't go out in this heat to travel and collect my sample. She berated me, saying these samples are rare, it would go to waste, you are not serious about your PhD and blah blah. I felt guilty and went out sick to work in the lab that day for 6 hours.

Now this weekend was a 3-day weekend and only after confirming with the hospital that there were no surgeries this weekend, i finalised my trip and went out-of-state this weekend. Now out of nowhere on friday morning, the doctor said there might be a surgery. My PI messaged me at 5 am in the morning, when i was already out of state. I was not getting a good network as we were travelling through the state borders, so i missed few of her calls and messages. At 6pm evening, I am seeing that the surgery was cancelled, so no patients, yipee, but because of the actions of my PI all hell has broke loose. She has tagged the HOD and emailed me saying that patients will be coming over the weekend and to be ready. Then as a way to punish me, is asking me to present my work data on Monday morning in front of the entire lab, without informing me prior. I usually don't open my work gmail or check the lab WhatsApp group on the weekends, and this is what she's done.

This is neither the first time she's behaved like this and nor will be the last time. But since I have slowly started to push back against her crazy demands, she finds a ways to 'punish' me like this. Not opening my emails, keeping my stuff at the last minute, asking me to change numerous paragraphs in my writing the day of submission, saying i am not passionate enough if i ask for a vacation (i go back home to my family only twice a year...)

How to deal with a PI like this? I can't change lab, I only have a year worth of lab work to complete and then i am done. There is no PhD section to help listen to our issues like this. Should i just lose my mental peace and sanity for the next two years?
