Speed Freaks USA & Endless Pads - great customer service

Speed Freaks USA & Endless Pads - great customer service

Quick story. I wanted some Endless pads for a '25 BMW Z4. No one makes them. I emailed Speed Freaks to ask if they agreed I could buy pads for a Supra. They agreed. Pads showed up. Fronts don't fit. I did some more digging and turns out BMW changed the front pad design in '24 and Toyota did not. I emailed Speed Freaks (thanks Matt M!) about it. Matt was very apologetic and said Endless was looking into it. I got a call from Matt 24 hours later telling me Endless prototyped pads for the car and if I wanted to buy at set they would airmail them to me from Japan on their dime. Endless will be carrying pads for updated calipers on Zs going forward.

I thought this was kind of cool and wanted to share! We all do so much bitching when things go wrong I think it's important to also speak up when people go over and above!

ND2 HPDE brake setup – Carbotech XP12/XP10 feedback

2019 ND2 Miata, header/intake/exhaust/tune, 17x9s with 245/40-17 200tw, stock base brakes. Car is trailered, will see 5–10 HPDE events per season.

Plan:

  • Carbotech XP12 front, XP10 rear
  • Good race brake fluid
  • Inexpensive blank rotors (what brands are best bang for the buck?)
  • Keep current 17x9 / 245 setup

Questions for those tracking NDs hard:

  • Any reason to change the XP12/XP10 split for deep braking on 200tw?
  • Favorite budget blank rotors that hold up well on these cars?
  • At this pace/power level, are brake ducts a “must do” or “nice to have”?

Would appreciate real-world feedback from ND folks running similar pace/tires. TIA!

Window covering advice

Based on some googling I bought Reflectix Bubble Pack Insulation for window coverings. Cheap. Easy to work with. Removable.

One window done. I did hear somewhere that this will trap humidity between itself and the glass and could cause mold. I’m thinking if the vehicle is well ventilated and not holding heat or humidity I’ll be fine. I’ll just need to sleep in warmer gear. Am i thinking about this correctly? TIA!

Edit: I was originally going to tint the widows so seeing out would have been permanently difficult. Doing this, yes, I can take them out - but I was thinking about leaving them in the rear most windows full time. Vehicle has cameras for seeing blind-spots.

Material for a homemade air …

What do you fancy people use when you make homemade air dams? And where to source it? TIA.

Minneapolis area - suggestions for good venues, well run events

I have a friend in Minneapolis who invited me out for a weekend. Can you help me narrow down good venues for HPDE and some good clubs in the area that run fun events? TIA

Anyone intentionally run “less tire”?

Heard someone say driving vintage cars was a lot of fun because they move around a lot on their skinny tires at lower speeds and you get to really *drive* the car.

Makes me wonder if it would be more fun to do HPDE on less tire. Trade lap times (which i dont care about) for having manage more car control.

ND2 Miata - ease of maintenance?

In the market for an ND2. Learning (the *hard* way) that doing at home maintenance on new cars is BS. Maybe I shouldn’t have bought German cars. Are the ND2s easy to work on? Mainly wondering if I’ll need a OBDII handheld with a subscription to simply do a brake job. TIA.

It was said in another post’s comments:

More power so more room to grow into it. Momentum cars are fun until you outgrow the power. Then you're either chasing upgrades at the expense of reliability or a faster car.

First time I’ve heard this viewpoint. I’m strongly considering replacing my mk8 golf r with a Miata. Curious what others think about the idea if more power equals more room to grow. TIA.

My plan is to remove 3 rows and covert this into a 5 passenger van with ample storage and room to sleep in. Is it worth the trouble and inconvenience to save the passenger stuff from rows 3-5 (seats, seat belts etc) and store it all for years so when someday I go to sell this it will be worth more because I’ll have it?

Lastly anyone know where the RPO sticker is? I’d like to know what the axle gearing is.

If i drive 10 hours out to VIR I’d like a good experience. Help me with some recommendations. Ive already heard their in house school is good. How about groups where I can run my own car? TIA!

New to HPDE and I already see different groups have different levels of resources. One group assigned an instructor for the day to each novice. Another group didn’t have enough instructors for the 4 guys who had never been on track. Not a complaint - i appreciate everything these guys do and all the work they put in.

I’m one of the more recent guys bombarding y’all with brake questions. So here’s some humor to make up for it. 😘

TLDR: I need something to scan codes and let me do rear brakes on electronic parking brakes (EPB) 2025 BMW and 2024 VW. Preferably without a subscription.

Hi! I've tried two hand held scanners both of which were supposed to work w/ these cars and neither did. I'm tired of buying a returning stuff. I need something that will scan and reset basic codes and put EPB in service mode for brake jobs. 2025 BMW Z4 m40i & 2024 mk8 Golf R*.

*Note - I've read that VW did something to lock down their software in the recent past. I don't know much more than "something changed in the past model year or three and things are harder / different". This may or may not be accurate.

3500 LWB should be great for towing. Remove 3 rows, maintaining seating for 4. Room for tools and maybe even a camp mattress. Tint the windows black. Only issue is this one is a v6. Shocked at how many of these are only 6s. Towing is still 6300# which would probably suffice but I’d like more head room. Thoughts?

I’m not supposed to run summer tires at this temp. Is it okay to run my kumo v730s? I’ll trailer the car to the track.

It’ll be 36° at 9am 🥶

I could also put my all seasons back on 🤷‍♂️

Edit: these are carbotech xp10 pads. Do I need better pads next time.

I’m getting a gritty feeling when I’m on the break when they’re hot. The pins are sliding just fine.

Having the car reviewed by a local mechanic because I’m in a pinch, I need to get it done soon and I understand sometimes these guys don’t see normal track wear and tear.

They are referencing a small crack in the rotor, but I can’t really tell from this photo if it’s a crack or not. I’m asking for a better photo. Can you tell anything from the attached photo? There’s also a video in the link.

Better photos.

What do you guys think of these pads?

Also curious if you think this brake fluid is in need of being changed immediately.

Thanks for the time here.

Edit: I have an MK8 golf R with built-in fixed headrest so I can’t add that OE interior friendly four point harness thing that is already being recommended. At least that’s my understanding.

I could Google this but I like the conversation I get with you folks.

Talking w an instructor yesterday and he suggested I get a HANS. I want one, but am waiting till I get a 4-point harness. He points out they make HANS that are 3-point compatible 🤯

*Quick* review says the 3-point compatible ones are over $1k. I’m still interested. I just don’t want to find out later that what I buy works for 3pt but is substandard when I go 4pt. Or some other thing I’m not thinking of right now.

I don’t know what I don’t know 🤔

Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, if you read this far and you are from Ohio, I heard from a couple people that there might be a race shop in Ohio that would have these in stock to try on - anybody have any suggestions?

Edit: is this an acceptable way to tie down one corner of a car assuming you do this to all four corners and pull the front wheels forward in the rear wheels backward.

Every time I see someone do this I think boy that looks like it be so much easier. And then I also think boy this just doesn’t look right to me.
