Judge rules ousted Kalamazoo Township treasurer may not seek reelection

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A judge has ordered the Kalamazoo County clerk to take the name of the former Kalamazoo Township treasurer off the ballot after she tried to run for the position from which she resigned.
In a permanent injunction order filed Wednesday, Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Gary Giguere told the clerk’s office to pull Sherine Miller’s name off the August democratic primary ballot within 24 hours.

The injunction was issued immediately because the primary ballot must be finalized by June 4, the order said.

Wildwood update: Residents band together online, some get form to break out of lease

One new concern for some residents is an agreement being sent to residents who were looking to get out of their lease while units are currently condemned by the Kalamazoo Area Building Authority. News 8 obtained an agreement sent only to residents who were looking to get out of their lease while units are currently condemned by the Kalamazoo Builders Association.

Part of the terms includes non-disparagement and agreeing not to discuss the matter with anyone, including on social media. Emails shared with News 8 say tenants have to sign the form by Friday, May 15, if they told the office they plan to vacate.

“Landlord is willing to waive Residents early termination requirements, provided Residents vacate and turn in keys NO LATER THAN June 15, 2026, sign this Agreement, and agree not to discuss this matter with anyone, on social media or otherwise,” the document read.

“I think that there is a lot more to stand to lose than anything to gain because the reason they would be signing it is so they can terminate their lease without any termination fees,” Johnson said. “But based on our lease agreement was already breached and is voidable, so we wouldn’t have those fees anyway.”
Attorney Donald Roberts with Legal Aid of Western Michigan echoed Johnson.
“I guess I would argue that since the property has been condemned, the lease is in breach. And so they breached the lease by failing to maintain and repair the property,” he said.

Kalamazoo parking updates: Free 30 minutes, extended hours

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Street parking in downtown Kalamazoo will now be free for the first 30 minutes. It’s just one of the parking changes being implemented within the next few weeks.
The first-30-minutes-free rule will be in effect at all paid on-street parking spaces through the fall of 2027, according to Park Kalamazoo. Instead of a maximum of 90 minutes parking time in paid on-street spaces, drivers will be able to park their vehicles for up to three hours or longer across all parking zones. Parking in public ramps will still be free for the first 90 minutes.

Lawsuit claims Kalamazoo County deputy withheld evidence in shooting case

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A federal lawsuit claims a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office deputy withheld audio of a shooting for around two years while a Kalamazoo man sat in jail, charged with murder.

When the audio finally came to light, the suit says, the murder charge was dropped.
“The withheld evidence contradicted the prosecution’s theory and was only disclosed
immediately before Plaintiff’s favorable case resolution in November 2025,” the complaint claims.

East Lansing proposes cuts to police oversight, human rights commissions

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The city of East Lansing is proposing $40,000 in budget cuts for its Independent Police Oversight and Human Rights commissions, a move drawing concern from some community leaders.
The budget proposal would cut $42,000 from the East Lansing Independent Police Oversight Commission (ELIPOC) and $2,000 from the Human Rights Commission (HRC).
The agenda item report for the 2027 preliminary budget explains the cuts by saying they were to funds that had been budgeted for previous years but not used. However, ELIPOC Vice Chair Kath Edsall says it’s not just about the money.

“That was retaliatory. To pull our funding is retaliatory,” Edsall said. “This city manager has been embarrassed by human rights commissioners and independent police oversight commissioners coming forward, speaking out publicly against the actions of this police chief.”

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A group of members of the People’s Food Co-op of Kalamazoo announced that they have filed a complaint in court against the group’s board of directors.

It comes after months of director resignations and changes at the store level.

Members are officially called owners. A group of owners gathered at Kalamazoo College’s campus on Wednesday night to watch this month’s online board of directors’ meeting. At the end, the announcement of the lawsuit was shared with the group.

According to the release, a complaint was filed in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court. It alleges that current and former directors and officers have violated co-op bylaws and the Michigan Nonprofit Corporation Act. The complaint says directors have been appointed beyond statutory limits and decisions have been made outside of open and transparent processes. It further claims that members have been blocked from seeing corporate records like minutes and contracts. That has impaired members’ ability to participate in elections, petition processes and oversight, according to the claim

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — After nearly two years of planning and construction, The Landing Place is set to provide Kalamazoo-area families in need with emergency temporary housing.

The Landing Place started its life as a Country Inn and Suites hotel. Now, families will go there to get their own second chance.

Cheryl Schuch, CEO of Family Promise, the nonprofit tasked with operating the facility, said how long a family can stay will vary.

“Every family has their own path, they have their own needs and they have their own resources. And so it’s going to be very unique and specific to the families, with the goal of making sure everybody has a place to call home when they leave,” she said.

This isn’t the first time the nonprofit has operated programming out of a hotel, but Schuch said what makes this different from other shelter options is the lack of a definite end date. Rather, that will be based on a holistic approach to outline the goals.

“We don’t want to kick the can down the road and just keep them moving from place to place. This should be the stop that is the turning point for them,” she said.

It took $8 million to purchase and renovate the facility, according to county officials. Last December, part of a donation to the county was committed to covering $11 million for programming at the facility for three years. The first year is expected to cost $3.6 million, according to officials.

The building offers 70 rooms that will be filled by around 70 families in a staggered move-in process. The initial families have already been picked based on immediate need, like health conditions and age of children, and coordinated through Housing Resources Inc., officials said.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A sports group that has acquired several West Michigan ice rinks in the last year is under investigation by the state’s Attorney General’s office.

Black Bear Sports Group is being reviewed by Dana Nessel’s office on anti-trust grounds.

A civil inquiry obtained by News 8 said the office’s corporate oversight division was reviewing the company for “potential anticompetitive and unfair trade practices involving the consolidation of youth ice hockey facilities and programs in Michigan.”

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Eight days after a deadly shooting at Davis Street Park in Kalamazoo, the community is returning to a place that means a lot to them with a message of healing and remembrance.

An earth day cleanup brought neighbors out to care for the park and honor the memory of Telonn Horton, known to many as Lonny.

“This has been something that had been planned for a long time but I think really today’s focus is on honoring Lonny’s legacy and memory,” said Stephen Walsh, the Executive Director of the Vine Neighborhood Association. “We are really hoping to start some healing and allow the grieving process to start.”
