Looking for a very specific SLAM Lidar - Any suggestion?

Hello!

I work in the mining industry (underground mine) and we're looking for a very specific lidar.

Basically, this is what we're trying to achieve (screenshot attached).

We often have cavities that need to be scanned and right now, we're using very expensive lidar equipment that is used by our surveying team. It's a very high risk job due to the environment (turbulence, water, the walls are rough rocks that can potentially break equipement). Because we're a remote site, if an equipment breaks, it takes weeks to replace it due to shipment delays, and we don't want to break important equipment that is required for actual surveys. We're looking at 50k-100k stuff here.

The lidar absolutely needs :

  1. To be powerered by itself (no cable), as the Lidar can potentially be up to 10 meters from the floor (I doubt cheap lidars have 10+ meters long cables...).

  2. Be a cheap lidar, in case it breaks. Take notes that in the mining industry, "cheap" could be 1000-2000$.

Ideally, the lidar needs :

  1. To be a SLAM lidar, as it needs to be active when dropping the lidar in the cavity and needs to handle slight movement. Ideally we'll setup targets on the surface to georeference it manually (no precision needed, +- 2-3 degrees is good enough).

  2. If there's no such thing as a SLAM lidar that corresponds to all the requirements, the lidar needs to be powered up remotely.

  3. The data needs to be easily exported (we'll be using CloudCompare for the processing) : no software required or inexpensive software

What it doesn't need :

  1. Precision/accuracy/speed/range/point density

Range : As long as it's 5 meters, it's good enough

Precision/accuracy : As long as the slam positioning algorithm is okay (no massive glitches), we don't really care about the precision as we're mostly looking to get a rough cavity volume at +- 20cm accuracy.

  1. Power : The lidar will be active for like 1 minute at best. It doesn't need a lot of power.

Bonus :

  1. If the lidar is waterproof (to some degree), that's a huge bonus.

So yeah, this is pretty much it! It's a very niche request, but hopefully there's something in the market that fits our needs!

Thank you!

No matter the ratio, I can't achieve a cup that isn't too intense - Any tips? [Bambino Plus]

I'm using 14-15g of Delta Gold coffee, which is a blend of Arabica/Robusta from Brazil (roast is medium-ish) and popular in Portugal. The coffee package recommends 7g, but I double the dose so that it fits my portfafilter.

I'm using a Bambino Plus, with the default and automatic pre-infusion.

As seen on the video, it takes about 25-30 seconds depending of the ratio I'm trying to get. At 1:2, it's too overpowering/intense. At 1:1.5, it's slightly sour, but still intense/overwhelming for some reason.

I'm starting to question my flow, I've noticed the first second drips super fast (3 grams in 1 second), then it slows down, as you can see on the video. Could it be some form of channeling?

What causes this overwhelming taste? Half my cups are borderline undrinkable due to the intensity/bitterness, even though the parameters I use feel standard.

I've had so many delicious espresso shots in Europe in my different trips so I know I can enjoy espressos.

Little demo of my "Mining Simulator" game!

Game is still in development, so it's messy and features aren't fully developped yet, but it's a pretty neat preview of my progression so far!

Bought a skateboard yesterday - Last time I skated was more than 2 decades ago!

I remember practicing ollies at home with this crappy skateboard I won at a school soccer event. I was afraid to leave my street back then and never had the guts to go to a skatepark. I practiced during one summer and that was it.

For some reason in the past months I've had the itch to skate again. Bought a skateboard yesterday and went to practice my ollies for the first time today. Fun times! But man, my legs hurt and it's a much bigger workout than I thought haha.

Moving from Canada to Australia for a 2-3 years - Feasible?

I'm approaching 6 years of experience as a mining tech in a pretty complex UG mine in Canada. 3 years in surveying (I have a degree in Geomatics) and 3 years in drill and blast (stope designer for the most part).

Working abroad as an expat for a few years has always intrigued me, but considering I'm not an engineer, I'm afraid my choices are limited (even though my responsibilities right now correspond to an engineer role).

I'm even open to study : do 1 or 2 years mining programs even exist? Would they be relevant?

And finally, what is the mining consulting market in Australia? Do they even employ non-engineers, especially foreign non-engineers?

Thank you!

I had such a peaceful trip at São Miguel (Azores), here are some of my favorite pictures!

Such a fantastic island! I was lucky with the weather, just a few days prior to my arrival, the airport was a mess with multiple days of delays due to continuous bad weather. In my case, as I landed, the island welcolmed me with a sunny 22°C and the temperature remained perfect for pretty much the whole trip.

I visited the island with a different mindset than I usually have when traveling, which is taking my time. I booked 10 days at São Miguel, which is quite a lot more than the average time spent here by tourists. Just driving around, drinking wine and espressos, watching the sunsets, petting cats, hiking trails and overall enjoying life. It was amazing.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of the whole trip !

  1. As I drove in random dirt roads on the island, I noticed this lonely cow to my left. I didn't notice the tree at first, I just wanted to say hello to that cow and take some pictures. It ended up being such a great frame, almost like a cow who spawned from a portal!

  2. On my way to Sete Cidades, I had to stop my car and enjoy this view. There's something profoundly nostalgic about farms and hills like this (I grew up in a rural region), and the fog added a nice "we don't have this at home" touch.

  3. This is the view from a room at Monte Palace, an abandoned hotel at one of the highest point on the island. The reason it was abandoned in the early 90s, just 2 years after its inauguration? Well, apparently building a hotel where the visibility is null (foggy) for the most part of the year wasn't the wisest decision, haha.

  4. This picture sums up my experience driving around the villages of São Miguel. No matter where you were, it always felt cozy.

  5. The foggy atmosphere at the top of the hills/mountains was one my favorite experience to be honest. The contrast between the blooming flowers and the moody fog!

  6. A calm evening at Mosteiros, watching the sunset with a nearby cat strolling around me.

  7. At the end of my bike tour at the bottom of Sete Cidades, I rested around the ducks for a while and snapped some pictures. That was after the enormous snack a couple of ladies gave them. I think that one felt quite satisfied!

  8. My visit at the Gorreana Tea Factory. Here am I, taking pictures of this amazing view, while the tractor driver is minding his own business and doing routine work.

Honestly, for anyone who's thinking about visiting the Azores : Take your time, rent a car and take as many random backroads as possible. Feeling alone on this island is magical.

Hey folks!

I've booked a solo trip to São Miguel for 9 nights, and for the first 7 nights I'll stay in central Ponta Delgada. Keep in mind that my trip is scheduled in 1 month (early june), so I'm quite late in terms of reservations.

I've got two choices :

  1. Would it be realistic to take the remaining days for a second island trip? That would be two nights, and I've got to be at the airport at around 1pm. Which island would be the "safest" island to travel back and forth for that short period of time?

  2. If staying in São Miguel is preferable, do you guys have any recommendation for a 2 nights stay at the end of a trip? I wouldn't mind paying a bit more (even though that first hotel was expensive: 200$ cad/day) for a more "unique" experience.

Thank you!

Hey folks,

I actually found a great artist to help me designing the game assets of my mining sim game! He's not from the mining industry, but I'm trying my best to show him references and explaining the core principles.

I felt in love with his style as soon as I saw his portfolio, and I hope you guys feel like it represents the mining theme well so far.

I've also made a small kickstarter campaign to help fund his work (as a bonus pay), in case you're interested :)
