2 Sidekicks + an OP-1 Field: Update (Bad News)

Well my dreams are dead for now. I recently posted here about hooking up my OP-1 Field via USB to a Sidekick mixer and realizing it puts Tape Track 1 on Channel 1 and Tape Track 2 on Channel 2... getting excited i immediately went to order a second Sidekick hoping i could somehow coax it into getting track 3 and 4 on the second sidekick, basially giving me a full physical mixer for my OP1 tape tracks... sadly... it has not worked. the second i hook up the second Sidekick and turn it on, the OP1 freezes. :(.

I sent this to TE support for a feature request. I probably wont hold my breath tho :(

---

Hi TE team,

I own an OP-1 Field and two Sidekicks, and I'm trying to use them together as a standalone performance setup: the OP-1 Field sends each tape track as its own stereo pair over USB (as it does when used as an audio interface with a computer), and I'd love to have all four tape tracks on physical faders across the two Sidekicks.

What works today: OP-1 Field connected directly to one Sidekick works great — tape track 1 appears on Sidekick channel 1, track 2 on channel 2. But since the Sidekick only accepts four audio channels from a USB host, there's no way to reach tape tracks 3 and 4.=

What I tried: Connecting both Sidekicks to the OP-1 Field through a USB hub, hoping the second unit could handle tracks 3 and 4. Result: the moment the second Sidekick powers on, the OP-1 Field freezes completely.

Diagnostics I gathered (both units connected to a Mac):

Both Sidekicks enumerate and function perfectly as standalone interfaces (8 in / 4 out each), so neither unit is faulty.

Both report identical USB IDs (VID 0x2367, PID 0x9420, product string "EP-136") and identical firmware 1.01 — serial numbers EPDYR338 and EPDYP2PF.

Each unit requests the full 500 mA of USB bus power, so two on one hub demand 1 A total — possibly a factor in the freeze, though I suspect the OP-1 Field's host stack isn't expecting two identical audio devices behind a hub.

The request: firmware support for a dual-Sidekick setup —

OP-1 Field: tolerate a hub with two Sidekicks attached (no freeze), and route tape tracks 1–2 to the first unit and tracks 3–4 to the second.

Sidekick: a channel-offset setting so a unit can consume USB channels 5–8 instead of 1–4.

The OP-1 Field already streams all four tape tracks as discrete stereo pairs over USB, and both devices are firmware-updatable, so this feels like a software gap rather than a hardware limitation. Two Sidekicks plus an OP-1 Field would make an incredible fully-standalone four-track mixing rig — exactly the kind of modular setup the field system seems made for.

Happy to provide logs, video of the freeze, or beta-test anything you send my way.

Thanks for the great gear,

Nate

OP-1 Field + EP-136 Sidekick

Just discovered if i set my OP1-Field USB out to 8-channel then connect via USB to a EP-136 Sidekick, i get the tape track 1 and 2 as isolated stereo outs going to the sidekick mixer channels.

I have another sidekick in the mail (thanks to the 30% off) and am DYING to find out if i connect another sidekick via usb (hub) if it ‘auto recognizes’ and assigns tape track 3 + 4 to the second sidekick…

this would mean i basically have a fully physical mixer with sidekicks fx on each individual OP1 tape track, and each tape track being fully EQ-able and ‘monitor-able’ so i can pick instruments on the op1 and pre-listen through headphones while that track is muted via the fader… something ive wished for (pre-listening/ cueing before sending to an active main mix) since my first days with op1.

Anyone here have 2 sidekicks and an op1-field (and i guess a usb hub) and wanna either crush my dreams or get me more hyped before it gets here? if not ill report back once the second sidekick arrives next week.

Kaeru!

I tried slicing open a brand new dryer ball from fabricland, hollowing it out and putting a tongue in there then I was like wow that’s cute I better give it feet so it got some lil legs then I was like how can it see I better give it eyes and I thought it looked a bit like a frog so I gave it Kermit eyes and called him Kaeru, which is Japanese for frog, or so I hear. 🥰

OPXY File System Improvements + Resulting Chaos

Now that the OPXy supports nested folders better etc, i wanted to reoroganize stuff to prevent the EPIC SCROLL journeys required to search through samples. But after a simple test of moving one of USED my samples into a nested folder, if i reload the song, (or load another song that used that sample) it no longer loads the sample (makes sense cuz now its in a different spot).

Does anyone have a recommended workflow for this? Id like to take advantage of the new organizational possibilities but i feel like any changes to the filesystem as it is now will just break all my past beats. :(

Pet Mutant - Collectible felt monsters & art by Nate

Hello! I grew up trading Monster-In-My-Pockets, obsessing over Nintendo games and Jim Henson creations, performing Boglin puppet shows, and drawing weird creatures too gross for the fridge. Today I'm an inter-disciplinary artist, musician and game designer living on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Pet Mutant is the brand I would have torn open at the toy store in 1992 and refused to put back. Through the site, i offer many uglycute items that were drawn, painted, or felted & stuffed by my own two hands!

You can view my work, buy art & apparel, or adopt the 1-of-1 collectible mutants by visiting https://petmutant.com

Thanks! ❤️

Edwin!

Edwin is a Brodaxxian Swamp Flopper, his species was almost extinct when the Galactic Governer of the Spegg System introduced a mandatory breeding holiday. The results of holiday were largely positive and over the years, Swamp Floppers evolved to possess multiple eyeballs (more than the original amount of one).

Scientists think the multi-eyed mutations gave the creatures a much better chance of spotting potential mates on the annual Brodaxxian Swamp Hopper Lovin’ Day. The eyeballs also helped them track down Goldfish Crackers, which just so happens to be Edwin’s favourite food!

• Includes: Adoption Certificate + Food • Species: Brodaxxian Swamp Flopper • Primary Diet: Goldfish Crackers • Height: Approx. 2.5” • Length: Approx. 5” • Important Traits: Slick, Squishy, Slurpy, Stinky, Sullen

How I priced my work.

I recently started selling my felted creations via my website, and one of the biggest challenges I’ve had was knowing what to charge for my creations. I was verrry very nervous about charging what I ‘wanted’ to charge (ie based on the actual time invested, etc) because I was worried people would scoff at the price like I was charging a crazy amount for fluff.

That said, I decided to stick to my guns. I figured the worst thing that would happen is they don’t sell and it just means a) I get to keep them longer and b) I’ll be able to have them to show at markets or to approach retail spots with them. So I priced closer to the ‘higher’ end of where I was thinking, based off of researching other NON-ETSY artists. (Etsy seemed to be incredibly low prices for what looked like a MASSIVE amount of work!)

So I settled on:

Small (1-2”) creatures: $60-75ish Canadian Large (3-5”) creatures: $200ish

Now I can tell you with pride that I’ve put out one new creature every week since the beginning of May and as of tonight I’ve actually sold every single one so far… it has been an incredibly cool feeling and basically every dime I made from the sales has gone into things like getting tshirts and stickers made, boosting Instagram and TikTok posts and of course buying more wool 😂 but it gives me hope that maybe there is something here…

I have been putting in a lot of extra effort to the packaging - painting up special boxes or containers for the creatures, including stickers and postcards for free, including little extras like ‘felted food’ for the creature to eat, etc. if i factor in all the effort and packaging im probably still making less than minimum wage but with the prices things are at, i feel like it’s not a loss. I feel like im doing something I love and when they sell I get to keep doing something i love, and im excited to see where things go!

Crap now im worried this sounds like bragging but i didnt mean it that way. I wanted it to be inspiring to say that:

A) if you are unsure what to price your work as you’re not alone.. maybe just go with your gut and see what happens! B) I’m more than happy to answer any questions or give more details about how im doing things with my website, with shipping, with marketing.

Felting is still very new to me but I feel like I’ve been working on all these other areas and skills my whole life and I can finally put them all to good use to build something that feels so ‘pure’ like making sweet little ugly monsters out of felt 😊. Im very grateful for the inspiration and support this community has given me and just want to give back however I can ❤️🐙🤙

Meet Xxeebs!

Xxeebs is a strange and mysterious creature from the distant Cerulean Galaxy. Not a lot is known about them yet, so some further research may be required.

Includes: Adoption Certificate Species: Unknown Primary Diet: Unknown Height: Approx. 4" Important Traits: Tentacle-y, Eyeball-y, Snaggletoothed, Additional Details Unknown

Xxeebs was made with a combination of wet and needle felting. The body was wet felted and stuffed with polyfill and the tentacles and eyeballs etc were all needle felted on. I wish I used wire inside the tentacles so they could be posed better but i tried to shape them as I went so they would result in a creature that can ‘stand up’. 😊 hope you dig them!

Introducing Jyrbo

Jyrbo is a rare Brigoonian Buns Bounder. They had bounced into my pocket on a recent trip to Brigoo and when I tried taking them back to their home planet, they REFUSED to leave my pocket. They’ve since grown very fond of earthworms. 🪱

Includes: Adoption Certificate + Earthworms Species: Brigoonian Buns Bouncer Primary Diet: Regular Earthworms Height: Approx. 2”

They were needle felted in a single session in about 4-5 hours first the head then the bootied body. The fun part was figuring out how to make them stand upright and once I started adding the blue ‘moles’ I was able to put some strategically placed on their lower half to balance them 😊

Hello Little Birdie!

Wanted to see if I could get a large-ish body without wet felting so tried stuffing polyfill into a (new) sock then needle felting it around it. I like that I was able to keep the streakyness of the dyed wool and am going to try that more consciously next time to see if I can get nice patterns or textures by coercing the streaks into shapes & patterns! The beak is baked polymer clay filed down for details and painted with a sharpie acrylic marker 😊 will post progress on him as I go!
