Pet Mutant - Collectible felt monsters & art by Nate

Hello! I grew up trading Monster-In-My-Pockets, obsessing over Nintendo games and Jim Henson creations, performing Boglin puppet shows, and drawing weird creatures too gross for the fridge. Today I'm an inter-disciplinary artist, musician and game designer living on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Pet Mutant is the brand I would have torn open at the toy store in 1992 and refused to put back. Through the site, i offer many uglycute items that were drawn, painted, or felted & stuffed by my own two hands!

You can view my work, buy art & apparel, or adopt the 1-of-1 collectible mutants by visiting https://petmutant.com

Thanks! ❤️

Edwin!

Edwin is a Brodaxxian Swamp Flopper, his species was almost extinct when the Galactic Governer of the Spegg System introduced a mandatory breeding holiday. The results of holiday were largely positive and over the years, Swamp Floppers evolved to possess multiple eyeballs (more than the original amount of one).

Scientists think the multi-eyed mutations gave the creatures a much better chance of spotting potential mates on the annual Brodaxxian Swamp Hopper Lovin’ Day. The eyeballs also helped them track down Goldfish Crackers, which just so happens to be Edwin’s favourite food!

• Includes: Adoption Certificate + Food • Species: Brodaxxian Swamp Flopper • Primary Diet: Goldfish Crackers • Height: Approx. 2.5” • Length: Approx. 5” • Important Traits: Slick, Squishy, Slurpy, Stinky, Sullen

How I priced my work.

I recently started selling my felted creations via my website, and one of the biggest challenges I’ve had was knowing what to charge for my creations. I was verrry very nervous about charging what I ‘wanted’ to charge (ie based on the actual time invested, etc) because I was worried people would scoff at the price like I was charging a crazy amount for fluff.

That said, I decided to stick to my guns. I figured the worst thing that would happen is they don’t sell and it just means a) I get to keep them longer and b) I’ll be able to have them to show at markets or to approach retail spots with them. So I priced closer to the ‘higher’ end of where I was thinking, based off of researching other NON-ETSY artists. (Etsy seemed to be incredibly low prices for what looked like a MASSIVE amount of work!)

So I settled on:

Small (1-2”) creatures: $60-75ish Canadian Large (3-5”) creatures: $200ish

Now I can tell you with pride that I’ve put out one new creature every week since the beginning of May and as of tonight I’ve actually sold every single one so far… it has been an incredibly cool feeling and basically every dime I made from the sales has gone into things like getting tshirts and stickers made, boosting Instagram and TikTok posts and of course buying more wool 😂 but it gives me hope that maybe there is something here…

I have been putting in a lot of extra effort to the packaging - painting up special boxes or containers for the creatures, including stickers and postcards for free, including little extras like ‘felted food’ for the creature to eat, etc. if i factor in all the effort and packaging im probably still making less than minimum wage but with the prices things are at, i feel like it’s not a loss. I feel like im doing something I love and when they sell I get to keep doing something i love, and im excited to see where things go!

Crap now im worried this sounds like bragging but i didnt mean it that way. I wanted it to be inspiring to say that:

A) if you are unsure what to price your work as you’re not alone.. maybe just go with your gut and see what happens! B) I’m more than happy to answer any questions or give more details about how im doing things with my website, with shipping, with marketing.

Felting is still very new to me but I feel like I’ve been working on all these other areas and skills my whole life and I can finally put them all to good use to build something that feels so ‘pure’ like making sweet little ugly monsters out of felt 😊. Im very grateful for the inspiration and support this community has given me and just want to give back however I can ❤️🐙🤙

Meet Xxeebs!

Xxeebs is a strange and mysterious creature from the distant Cerulean Galaxy. Not a lot is known about them yet, so some further research may be required.

Includes: Adoption Certificate Species: Unknown Primary Diet: Unknown Height: Approx. 4" Important Traits: Tentacle-y, Eyeball-y, Snaggletoothed, Additional Details Unknown

Xxeebs was made with a combination of wet and needle felting. The body was wet felted and stuffed with polyfill and the tentacles and eyeballs etc were all needle felted on. I wish I used wire inside the tentacles so they could be posed better but i tried to shape them as I went so they would result in a creature that can ‘stand up’. 😊 hope you dig them!

Introducing Jyrbo

Jyrbo is a rare Brigoonian Buns Bounder. They had bounced into my pocket on a recent trip to Brigoo and when I tried taking them back to their home planet, they REFUSED to leave my pocket. They’ve since grown very fond of earthworms. 🪱

Includes: Adoption Certificate + Earthworms Species: Brigoonian Buns Bouncer Primary Diet: Regular Earthworms Height: Approx. 2”

They were needle felted in a single session in about 4-5 hours first the head then the bootied body. The fun part was figuring out how to make them stand upright and once I started adding the blue ‘moles’ I was able to put some strategically placed on their lower half to balance them 😊

Zarles!

Hope this doesn’t count as promo, just trying to share this lil guy since someone adopted him!

FLOORED that @puffpuffpassoutasmr (Instagram) adopted Zarles before I even had a chance to send the email out. A record 60 seconds from the time he dropped!!! Mad love my friend, hope he brings you plenty of smiles and keeps your floor clear of teeth and bones. 🦴

Zarles is a rare Finless Flopper Shark. A strange evolutionary cross between a House Hippo, a Microshark and a Underoo’d Unastonian Mini-Man, Zarles carries the best traits of all of its DNA-donors, and is currently preparing to run for Governor of Unastonia in 2027!

Includes: Adoption Certificate + Some Teeth and Bones Species: Finless Flopper Shark Primary Diet: Teeth and Bones Height: Approx. 1” Important Traits: Hilarious, pesky, honest, slippery and somewhat emotional.

Hello Little Birdie!

Wanted to see if I could get a large-ish body without wet felting so tried stuffing polyfill into a (new) sock then needle felting it around it. I like that I was able to keep the streakyness of the dyed wool and am going to try that more consciously next time to see if I can get nice patterns or textures by coercing the streaks into shapes & patterns! The beak is baked polymer clay filed down for details and painted with a sharpie acrylic marker 😊 will post progress on him as I go!

Pet Mutant • Week 2...

I was going to post this to the subreddit and just humbly declare that I launched my second needle-felted "Pet Mutant" on my website, and in the time that I was prepping to post the video, someone has already adopted it...!

Stomper is one of my smaller creations that I created purely out of needle felting (usually my bigger creatures have a wet-felted + polyfill-stuffed body and then i needle felt the appendages and details on to it.)

Im beyond gobsmacked and absolutely dizzy with positivity that there is some awesome collector out there who saw Stomper and said they had to have it. Huge thank you to that person, (if you're in this subreddit!!) -- you have given me hope that one of the activities that has brought me the most amount of joy this year (Needle Felting!) might actually be the start of something I've always wanted to do: start an actual "identity" around my artwork that makes it a million times easier to talk about and promote when i have to as it doesnt feel like bragging anymore -- i can confidently say i think its awesome because im pouring everything i can into it, and it feels like people are recognizing that. ❤️

What a freaking cool artform felting is, ive never felt (haha) so empowered to make little creatures that I absolutely adore from the moment I can start to see their weird little bodies forming between my heavily stabbed fingertips. 😊

Huge love yall.

Murp was Adopted!

‘Murp’ dropped last night on the Pet Mutant site and was adopted in less than 2 hours. Huge love to Jason who is the proud new owner of one of the cutest things I’ve ever made with my hands. It makes me feel like maybe just mayyyybe I AM on to something here 😊

❤️ thank you to everyone in here who gave me kind words and encouragement, you helped me be brave enough to try taking my creations to the next level!!
